Forward transactions may increase under the new exchange- management regime allowing banks a free play to fix exchange rates up to Tk 122 each US dollar in spot transactions. Most of the banks are showing interest in forward transactions instead of spot deals to ensure their maximum exchange gains, according to market operators. All the authorized dealer (AD) banks are allowed for forward deal-making with their clients for a maximum of 90 days. "The banks are getting encouraged gradually in forward transactions to make the most in profit from the deals," a senior treasury official of a leading private commercial bank (PCB) told the Financial Express (FE) while explaining the possible impact of the new exchange-rate regime.

Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) will priorities time-bound development of five government-managed economic zones (EZs) over the next two years, aiming to ensure desired industrialization in the country, its Executive Chairman said on Tuesday. "We are officially announcing that we would prioritize development of five EZs in a focused way," Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun said. This is important to meet industrialization demands for the next five to ten years, he said, adding: "We are not discarding the other EZ, but we would now focus on these five EZs," The five EZs are National Special Economic Zone, Srihatta Economic Zone, Jamalpur Economic Zone, Maheshkhali Economic Zone and Japanese Economic Zone. The farmers of northern Gaibandha district remain in the dark about timely forecast of any natural calamities with no regional meteorological office here. Farmers said agriculture is the lifeblood of Gaibandha which belongs to 186 chars. As many as 20 types of crops are grown in the district. Gaibandha is a district of 33,000 hectares of land- of which 27,000 hectares are cultivable, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). "We don't get weather forecast of storm, heavy rain, flood, drought and other natural calamities for lack of any weather office in Gaibandha," many a farmer said. Therefore, different natural calamities, including storm, flood and drought, damage huge quantities of crops every year, they add.

The government is set to reduce its ownership in Grameen Bank by lowering its shareholding from 25% to 5% and slim down its authority on the board by limiting its director appointments from three, including the chairman, to just one. The government has already drafted an amendment to the Grameen Bank Act, 2013 to implement the changes.
