Introduction of agent banking system across the country has taken the banking service to the doorsteps of the common people who so long did not have access to formal financial service. In the traditional banking system, clients have to go to cities and towns for banking purposes; but it is the other way round in case of agent banking. Agent banks, aka agency banking, are the banks of the common people at their closer vicinity. Such a service was completely unthinkable for common people in the past when banking transactions were the exclusive affair only of the affluent sections of society. Now people even at the grassroots level with limited financial capacity can avail themselves of the service despite their financial illiteracy.

The government has cut natural gas allocation for Intraco Refueling Station to one-fifth as the company failed to supply the committed volume of compressed natural gas (CNG) from Bhola. As a result, the company will be able to compress up to 5.0 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas under its existing deal with the state-run Sundarban Gas Company Ltd (SGCL). Bangladesh's overall balance of payment (BoP) deficit dropped by nearly 89% in the first half of FY25 compared to the same period last fiscal year, according to Bangladesh Bank data. The improvement comes despite the macroeconomic instability from the political turmoil in August, subsequent floods, and continuous protests over various demands. According to the data, the overall deficit in the balance of payments – also known as the external balance – stood at $384 million in July-December of FY25, a sharp decline from $3.45 billion in the corresponding period of FY24 – reflecting an improvement of approximately $3.07 billion.

Mobile financial service-provider Nagad Limited has been sued by the central bank on charges of pecuniary offences involving Tk 6.45 billion worth of e-money issued sans currency backup. A total of 24 individuals, including Nagad's former chairman Syed Mohammad Kamal and former managing director and CEO Tanvir Ahmed Mishuk, have been accused of fund embezzlement through issuing Tk 6.45 billion in e-money without maintaining currency reserves. Joint director of the payment system department of Bangladesh Bank Sarker Mohammad Amir Khasru filed the "fraud case" with Motijheel police station on February 03, a BB official confirmed the matter to The Financial Express correspondent on Tuesday.

The Local Government Division (LGD) has proposed spending over Tk 1.07 billion on consultancy services for a project that involves repairing flood-damaged infrastructures and building shelters in six districts to mitigate future disaster impacts.The districts are Noakhali, Feni, Cumilla, Lakshmipur, Chattogram, and Moulvibazar. The proposed consultancy costs account for over 5 per cent of the total project budget estimated at Tk 21.40 billion. "The average monthly salary for each consultant has been proposed at Tk 361,549, while some will receive over Tk 1 million, to comply with the development partner's conditions," said a senior planning commission official. The official also said the projects' proposed activities are the regular work of the government offices concerned, which is why the number of consultants and their monthly salaries should be reduced further to justified levels.
