In an effort to provide essential food items at lower prices, the Department of Agricultural Marketing has launched an initiative to sell agricultural products directly from trucks. This initiative is aimed at offering consumers an affordable alternative to regular market prices. Starting today (24 October), a variety of vegetables and food items, including eggs, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, pointed gourd, onions, papaya, sweet pumpkin, and radish, are available for purchase. These products are being sold at significantly lower prices compared to regular market rates, attracting large numbers of buyers.

The cost of the Padma Rail Link Project (PRLP) is likely to be reduced by more than Tk 18.44 billion or nearly 4.7 per cent of the original cost of Tk 392.46 billion, according to Bangladesh Railway. Project officials said the cost was reduced by Tk 6.21 billion in the second revised development project proposal which was approved on April 17 last with an extension of the tenure up to June 2026 as original tenure ended in June this year. A further reduction of Tk 12.23 billion would be possible by revising the cost of different components of work package-1 like design survey fees, signaling and communication, ballastless track, physical contingency."It is now estimated that a total of Tk 18.44 billion will be reduced from the original project cost," said an official, preferring not to be named.

In a significant move to streamline the tax-filing process, the revenue board announces that individual taxpayers will no longer be required to submit supporting documents like bank statements when filing returns online.The National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Md Abdur Rahman made the disclosure at a press briefing convened at the NBR headquarters."Taxpayers are advised to retain their documents for verification purposes, but no attachments will be necessary for online submissions," he said.According to Mr Rahman, this initiative aims to encourage taxpayers to file their returns electronically.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has drafted the fifth phase of the Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Programme (5th HPNSP) at an estimated cost of over Tk1.06 trillion, aiming the highest attainable level of health for all. The government will provide Tk 806.85 billion from its exchequer, and another Tk 254.15 billion, around 23.95 per cent of the total cost, will be mobilized from foreign sources as loans and grants. The health ministry sent the proposal in this regard to the planning ministry, said high officials of both the ministries.

Square Pharmaceuticals, the largest drug maker in the country, posted a record profit of Tk 20.92 billion for FY'24, driven by record sales. Based on the record consolidated net profit, the company also declared the highest ever cash dividend -- 110 per cent -- for the same fiscal year. Year on year, the drug maker registered a 10.26 per cent profit growth. The consolidated net profit was Tk 18.98 billion in FY'23. The company's expanded distribution network and higher sales volume boosted its revenue, resulting in record profit growth in FY'24, said a senior official of the company. The board of directors of the company declared the record cash dividend at a meeting on Wednesday. It paid out 105 per cent cash dividend for FY'23 and 100 per cent cash dividend for FY'22.

Bangladesh received foreign aid worth $846.12 million in the first quarter (Q1) of the current fiscal year (FY 2024-25). The amount is around 34% lower than $1.28 billion received in the July-September quarter of the last FY, according to the latest figures of the Economic Relations Division (ERD).During the period under review, the country paid $1.13 billion in foreign debt servicing which is 33% higher than the amount received in loans and grants. The government repaid $870.46 million in the Q1, FY24. Debt servicing cost increased by 29.42% in the reporting period, according to the ERD figures.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received US$121 million from USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance to support its humanitarian response to the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh.The new contribution from the United States includes both in-kind and financial support for Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.The funds will be used to provide lifesaving food and nutrition assistance and support resilience-building and disaster risk reduction in the camps, according to a press release. Children and pregnant and breastfeeding women in host communities will also receive assistance to prevent and treat malnutrition, it reads. The US funding will additionally enable WFP to provide immediate food needs during emergencies (hot meals and fortified biscuits) for Rohingya families affected by sudden crises such as cyclones, floods, landslides, and fire incidents.

SBAC Bank PLC reported a staggering 158 per cent increase in profit for the third quarter of 2024, driven by rising investment income. The problem-ridden private commercial bank disclosed its unaudited profit results on Wednesday. In a stock exchange filing on Wednesday, SBAC Bank stated that its third-quarter profit reached Tk 404 million, marking an increase of Tk 247 million compared to the same period last year. In the first nine months of 2024, the bank's profit totaled Tk 783 million, reflecting a 58 per cent year-over-year increase. The surge in profit is attributed to a sudden rise in share prices following the regime change and returns from government securities.

দেশে এখন পর্যন্ত আবিষ্কৃত গ্যাস ফিল্ডগুলোর মধ্যে গ্যাসের সর্বোচ্চ পরিমাণে প্রমাণিত মজুদ মিলেছে বিবিয়ানা গ্যাস ক্ষেত্রে। জাতীয় গ্রিডে মোট সরবরাহকৃত গ্যাসের মধ্যে প্রায় ৩৪ শতাংশই আসছে বিবিয়ানা থেকে। এখন পর্যন্ত গ্যাস ক্ষেত্রটিতে গ্যাসের প্রমাণিত মজুদ মিলেছে ৭ হাজার ৮৪ বিলিয়ন ঘনফুটের (বিসিএফ) মতো। এর মধ্যে এখন পর্যন্ত উত্তোলন করা হয়েছে ৫ হাজার ৮০০ বিসিএফ। সে অনুযায়ী গ্যাস ক্ষেত্রটিতে গ্যাসের মজুদ অবশিষ্ট আছে প্রায় ১ হাজার ২৫০ বিসিএফ।

২০৩৫ সালের মধ্যে বায়ু ও সৌরভিত্তিক বিদ্যুৎ সক্ষমতা ১ লাখ ২০ হাজার মেগাওয়াটে উন্নীত করতে চায় তুরস্ক, যা বর্তমান সক্ষমতার চার গুণ। এ বাবদ খরচ হবে ৮ হাজার কোটি ডলার। এ লক্ষ্য অনুসারে দেশটিতে বার্ষিক প্রায় আট হাজার মেগাওয়াট বিদ্যুৎ সক্ষমতা বাড়বে। সম্প্রতি এসব তথ্য উল্লেখ করে তুরস্কের জ্বালানি ও প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদ বিষয়কমন্ত্রী আলপারসলান বায়রাকতার জানান, ২০৫৩ সাল নাগাদ জ্বালানি খাতে বিদেশ নির্ভরতা কমানোর পাশাপাশি নিট জিরো কার্বন নিঃসরণ লক্ষ্য অর্জন করতে চায় তুরস্ক।

অপরিশোধিত জ্বালানি তেলের দাম আগামী বছর নাগাদ ব্যারেলপ্রতি ৬০ ডলারে নেমে আসতে পারে বলে পূর্বাভাস দিয়েছে মার্কিন বহুজাতিক বিনিয়োগ ব্যাংক ও আর্থিক পরিষেবা প্রতিষ্ঠান জেপি মরগান। সংস্থাটির সাম্প্রতিক প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, চলতি বছরগুলোয় অপরিশোধিত জ্বালানি তেলের দাম ওঠানামা করতে পারে। চলতি বছরের শেষ প্রান্তিকে এর দাম ব্যারেলপ্রতি ৮০ ডলারে উন্নীত হতে পারে। এ নিম্নমুখিতা বজায় রেখে ২০২৫ সালের শেষ দিকে তা নেমে যেতে পারে ৬০ ডলারে। খবর বিজনেস টুডে।

আমদানি অব্যাহত থাকায় দিনাজপুরের হিলি স্থলবন্দরে পেঁয়াজের সরবরাহ বেড়েছে। এতে একদিনের ব্যবধানে মসলাপণ্যটির দাম কেজিতে ৫-৭ টাকা কমে গেছে। সরবরাহ ভালো থাকলে দাম বাড়ার তেমন সম্ভাবনা নেই বলে জানিয়েছেন বন্দরের আমদানিকারকরা। বন্দর কার্যালয় সূত্রে জানা গেছে, হিলি দিয়ে ইন্দোর ও বেলোরি এ দুই জাতের পেঁয়াজ আমদানি হচ্ছে। একদিন আগে ইন্দোর জাতের পেঁয়াজ পাইকারিতে কেজিপ্রতি ৯০ টাকায় বিক্রি হয়েছে। গতকাল তা কমে ৮৩ টাকা দরে বিক্রি হয়। এছাড়া বেলোরি জাতের পেঁয়াজ আগের দিন ৯৩ টাকা বিক্রি হলেও গতকাল তা কমে ৮৮ টাকা কেজিতে বিক্রি হয়েছে।

আধা সেদ্ধ চালের ওপর থেকে রফতানি শুল্ক প্রত্যাহারের ঘোষণা দিয়েছে ভারত। গত মাসে রফতানি শুল্ক ১০ শতাংশ নামিয়ে আনার পর এবার তা পুরোপরি সরিয়ে নিল দেশটি। রফতানি বাড়ানোর লক্ষ্যে গত মঙ্গলবার এ পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে ভারতের অর্থ মন্ত্রণালয়। খবর এসঅ্যান্ডপি গ্লোবাল ও এনডিটিভি।এর আগে গত ২৭ সেপ্টেম্বর আধা সেদ্ধ চালের রফতানি শুল্ক ২০ থেকে কমিয়ে ১০ শতাংশে নামিয়ে আনে বিশ্বের বৃহত্তম চাল রফতানিকারক দেশটি। এছাড়া বাসমতী ছাড়া অন্যান্য সাদা চাল রফতানির ক্ষেত্রে প্রতি টনে ৪৯০ ডলারের ন্যূনতম রফতানি মূল্য (এমইপি) বেঁধে দেয়া হয়। এবার শুল্ক পুরোপুরি তুলে দেয়া হলো। বিশ্লেষকরা বলছেন, এতে চাল রফতানিতে আগ্রহী হবেন ব্যবসায়ীরা।

পুঁজিবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত স্কয়ার ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালস পিএলসির পর্ষদ সমাপ্ত ২০২৩-২৪ হিসাব বছরে বিনিয়োগকারীদের ১১০ শতাংশ নগদ লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা করেছে। লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণার পাশাপাশি বিএমআরই (ব্যালান্সিং, আধুনিকায়ন, বিস্তার ও প্রতিস্থাপন), মূলধনি যন্ত্রপাতি ও ভবিষ্যতে জমি সম্প্রসারণে ৫০০ কোটি টাকা অনুমোদন দেয়া হয়েছে। কোম্পানি সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। তথ্য অনুসারে, ২০২৩-২৪ হিসাব বছরে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ারপ্রতি সমন্বিত আয় (ইপিএস) হয়েছে ২৩ টাকা ৬১ পয়সা, আগের হিসাব বছরে যা ছিল ২১ টাকা ৪১ পয়সা। গত ৩০ জুন শেষে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ারপ্রতি সমন্বিত নিট সম্পদমূল্য (এনএভিপিএস) দাঁড়িয়েছে ১৪২ টাকা ৫ পয়সায়।

৩০ আগস্ট যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের আন্তর্জাতিক বাণিজ্য কমিশন (ইউএসআইটিসি) প্রকাশিত এক প্রতিবেদনে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ক্রেতারা বাংলাদেশকে চীন ও ভিয়েতনামের সম্ভাবনাময় বিকল্প হিসেবে মনে করেন। কোনো শুল্কমুক্ত সুবিধা ছাড়াই বাংলাদেশ এখনও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের তৃতীয় বৃহত্তম পোশাক সরবরাহকারী দেশ। একদিকে পোশাক খাতে চীনের প্রভাব কমছে। অন্যদিকে আমদানীকারকরা ভিয়েতনামের বাইরেও বিকল্প খুঁজছেন; এই প্রেক্ষাপটে বাংলাদেশ কি আমেরিকান বাজারে তার অবস্থান ধরে রাখতে পারবে? যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের আন্তর্জাতিক বাণিজ্য কমিশনের সর্বশেষ প্রতিবেদন ইঙ্গিত দিচ্ছে, বাংলাদেশ ইতোমধ্যে সেই পথেই রয়েছে। ৩০ আগস্ট যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের আন্তর্জাতিক বাণিজ্য কমিশন (ইউএসআইটিসি) প্রকাশিত এক প্রতিবেদনে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ক্রেতারা বাংলাদেশকে চীন ও ভিয়েতনামের সম্ভাবনাময় বিকল্প হিসেবে মনে করেন। তারা মনে করেন, পোশাক খাতের কিছু ক্যাটাগরিতে চীনের সাথে পাল্লা দিতে পারে এমন কয়েকটি দেশের মধ্যে বাংলাদেশ অন্যতম।

প্রায় ২২টি বাংলাদেশি পোশাক রপ্তানিকারকের পাওনা ১৯.৯৩ মিলিয়ন পরিশোধ করেনি অস্ট্রেলিয়ার ফ্যাশন রিটেইলার মোজাইক ব্র্যান্ডস লিমিটেড। এতে সংকটে পড়েছে এই রপ্তানিকারকরা। বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতি (বিজিএমইএ) ইতিমধ্যে পাওনা আদায়ের জন্য ঢাকাস্থ অস্ট্রেলিয়ান হাইকমিশনের সঙ্গে দুবার যোগাযোগ করেছে। এছাড়া শিগগিরই আরও একটি চিঠি পাঠানোর পরিকল্পনা করছে সংগঠনটি। এ-সংক্রান্ত নথি টিবিএসের হাতে এসেছে। বাংলাদেশি রপ্তানিকারকরা দীর্ঘদিন ধরে মোজাইক ব্র্যান্ডের সঙ্গে ব্যবসা করে আসছে। 'বিল অভ লেডিং' জমা দেওয়ার ১২০ দিনের মধ্যে রপ্তানিকারকদের টাকা পরিশোধের চুক্তি রয়েছে ব্র্যান্ডটির সঙ্গে।

নৌপরিবহন অধিদপ্তর একটি নিয়ন্ত্রণমূলক কাঠামো ফের চালু করায় পণ্য পরিবহনের খরচ বাড়তে চলেছে। অনেকেই মনে করছেন, এতে সিন্ডিকেটের দাপট বাড়বে। চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর থেকে লাইটার জাহাজযোগে পণ্য পরিবহনে ২০২৩ সালে ভেঙে দেওয়া হয়েছিলো সিরিয়াল প্রথা। এর ফলে বন্দর দিয়ে আমদানি করা পণ্য দেশের ৩৪টি নৌরুটে পরিবহনে আগের তুলনায় অন্তত ২০ শতাংশ পণ্য পরিবহন ব্যয় কমে এসেছিল। কিন্তু গত ১৫ অক্টোবর নৌপরিবহন অধিদপ্তর থেকে অনুমতিপ্রাপ্ত লাইটার জাহাজের মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশের সমুদ্র বন্দরসমূহে পণ্য পরিবহন নীতিমালা, ২০২৪ প্রণয়ন করায় এ ব্যয় আবারও বেড়ে যাওয়ার আশঙ্কা দেখা দিয়েছে।
