ভিয়েতনাম থেকে সাড়ে ১২ হাজার টন আতপ চাল নিয়ে একটি জাহাজ চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরে পৌঁছেছে। খাদ্য মন্ত্রণালয় গতকাল এক সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ তথ্য জানিয়েছে। এতে বলা হয়েছে, চলতি বছরের ৩ ফেব্রুয়ারি সম্পাদিত জিটুজি চুক্তির আওতায় ভিয়েতনাম থেকে মোট এক লাখ টন আতপ চাল আমদানি করার কথা। চুক্তি অনুযায়ী এরই মধ্যে ৭২ হাজার ৭০০ টন চাল দেশে পৌঁছেছে। বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে আরো বলা হয়, চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরে জাহাজে রক্ষিত চালের নমুনা পরীক্ষার কাজ এরই মধ্যে শেষ হয়েছে এবং চাল খালাসের কার্যক্রম দ্রুত শুরু হবে। এজন্য প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করা হয়েছে।

To modernise tax administration and increase revenue, the government is set to launch a Tk1,019 crore project aimed at fully digitising the National Board of Revenue (NBR), with support from the World Bank. The "Strengthening Domestic Revenue Mobilisation Project" will automate income tax, VAT, and customs services and introduce a unified identification number for taxpayers—eliminating the current separation of Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) and Business Identification Numbers (BINs). This integration aims to improve compliance, curb tax evasion, and reduce bureaucratic hassles. "We're working to get approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council [Ecnec] by June. This project aligns with our long-term revenue strategy," NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan told The Business Standard. The five-year project (July 2025–June 2030) will roll out a centralised VAT e-invoicing system, an AI-powered taxpayer call centre, and full digitisation of all tax offices. It will also link NBR systems with other government agencies to enhance data sharing and enforcement.

Bangladesh needs to pursue a strong, evidence-based negotiation and proactively initiate a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US in response to President Donald Trump's declaration of higher tariffs, to safeguard its $8 billion export market in the country. Additionally, comprehensive policy measures are needed to boost export earnings from the US and other countries by diversifying markets and enhancing competitiveness rather than relying on increased imports from the US to address trade imbalances. These remarks came from experts, economists and representatives of the private sector on Thursday from a dialogue titled "Trump Reciprocal Tariffs and Bangladesh: Implications and Response" organised by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) at a hotel in the capital. Professor Rehman Sobhan, Chairman of CPD, delivered special commentary, while Professor Mustafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow at CPD, presented a keynote paper at the event chaired by Dr Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of the host organisation.

A majority of listed banks have refrained from making fresh investments in the equity market even if they have not yet exhausted the permissible exposure limit because of pessimism surrounding stocks.The banks, which have already invested substantial amounts of funds, have incurred huge losses due to the persistent erosion in the equity market. Subsequently, they had to keep provisions from operating profits against the losses and the provisioning requirements continued to rise with the losses. As many as 24 out of 36 listed banks have investments up to 15 per cent of their capital in the secondary market, within the allowable limit of 25 per cent, as of February this year. Because of the fear of further erosion of the market value of assets, banks would rather like to withdraw funds. Meanwhile, stockbrokers and merchant banks have been given an extended period until December this year for keeping provision against unrealised losses but banks are required to keep 100 per cent provisions against losses. Earlier, banks had enjoyed a waiver from provisioning against unrealised losses in investments in mutual funds. In May last year, the central bank scrapped the waiver.

The US government's recent crackdown on international students has raised concerns, particularly among Indian students. According to a report by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), about half of the 327 recent visa revocations collected by the organisation have been of Indian students. The AILA brief, titled “The Scope of Immigration Enforcement Actions Against International Students”, highlights that 50 percent of these students were from India, followed by 14 percent from China. Other countries represented in the data include South Korea, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The US State Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have been screening foreign students' data, including their social and political activism, over the past four months. Some allege that this screening is done using artificial intelligence, which may lead to inaccurate targeting of students without a criminal history or links to campus protests. In March, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the "Catch and Revoke" programme to identify and screen student visa holders, including monitoring their social media for evidence of anti-Semitism or support for Palestinians and Hamas. The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a portal used by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to track international students and exchange programme visitors.

Although the National Board of Revenue (NBR)'s revenue collection surged a bit during the Jul-March period of the current fiscal year compared to the corresponding period of last fiscal, it still fell some 20 per cent short of the total target, official data showed on Saturday. The NBR collected Tk 2.56 trillion in tax and revenue during the Jul-March period of the fiscal year (FY) 2024-25, about Tk 656.66 billion or 20 per cent lower than the revised target of Tk 3.22 trillion for period under review, the revenue board data showed. The state-run tax collector during the Jul-Mar period of FY2024 earned Tk 2.495 trillion in revenue, the official data showed. The NBR has revised down its total revenue collection target to Tk 4.635 trillion for the current FY2025 to support the national budget. With the Jul-March period over, the NBR now will have to collect 44.66 per cent more revenue in the last quarter (April-June) of the current FY2025, the official statistics showed. According to the NBR data, local value-added tax (VAT) collection during the Jul-Mar period of FY2025 was recorded at Tk 953.11 billion, 2.09 percentage points higher than that of the same period of FY2024.

Senior officials and industry leaders were present at the meeting " We need to show the world that the internet will no longer shut down … this is a responsibility we must fulfill to assure investors," Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb told the event. Highlighting the country's low global rankings in internet affordability and digital governance, the acting head of the Posts and Telecommunications Division outlined an ambitious roadmap to modernise the sector.

China's shipbuilders on Saturday blasted as "short-sighted" US port fees announced by President Donald Trump's administration on China-linked ships, a measure aimed at the nation's shipbuilding industry. Trump signed an order on Wednesday aimed at reviving US shipbuilding and reducing China's grip on the global shipping industry. His government the next day watered the measures down by shielding domestic exporters and vessel owners serving the Great Lakes, the Caribbean and US territories. The spat over ocean shipping, which conveys 80% of global trade, is the latest conflict in an intensifying trade war between China and the US that has pushed levies on each other's imports beyond 100%. The China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry expressed "extreme indignation and resolute opposition" to the US measures, joining protests from the government and country's shipowners. "The decline of the US shipbuilding industry is the result of its protectionism and has nothing to do with China," the shipbuilders said in a statement. It warned the US restrictions would disrupt the global maritime system, lead to soaring shipping costs, further push up US inflation and harm the interest of the US people. "We call on the international maritime industry to jointly resist this short-sighted U.S. behaviour, and jointly maintain a fair market environment," the industry body said, adding it expects Chinese authorities to take strong countermeasures.

Experts at a webinar Sunday warned that Bangladesh was at risk of losing its trade competitiveness unless it urgently pursues Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in response to shifting global tariff policies. Organised by the Forum for Bangladesh Studies (FBS), the event highlighted the growing threat of US protectionism and called for immediate strategic planning to safeguard the country's export future. FBS hosted the webinar titled "Tariff Crisis and Trade War: What Should Be Our Strategy?" to examine Bangladesh's position in the face of rising global protectionism and the shifting dynamics of international trade. Dr Niaz Asadullah, Head of Southeast Asia, Global Labour Organisation (GLO), moderated while the keynote address was delivered by Jyoti Rahman, an economist and international relations expert at Sydney Analysis. The keynote emphasised that the current US tariff policies were weakening the foundation of multilateral trade systems. Mr Rahman said, "As we look ahead, the path forward seems uncertain." The global economic recovery continues to face headwinds, and they must prepare for the possibility that this sluggish pace could persist into next year.

State-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) has floated three separate tenders to procure the liquefied natural gas (LNG). The fuel cargoes are for May 22-23, June 5-6 and June 12-13 delivery windows, a senior RPGCL official told The Financial Express Saturday. The country's energy demand has gone up since March with the advent of summer and is expected to grow further with the rise of temperature. Bangladesh has been buying three spot LNG cargoes for the delivery windows of March and April respectively. The bid winners will deliver the LNG cargoes with options to discharge at either of the country's two floating storage re-gasification units (FSRUs) located on Moheshkhali Island. The RPGCL, a wholly owned subsidiary of state-run Bangladesh Oil, Gas, and Mineral Corporation, or Petrobangla, looks into LNG trades in Bangladesh. The volume of each of the spot LNG cargoes will be around 3.36 million British Thermal units (MMBtu). Bangladesh currently imports LNG from Qatar Energy and OQ Trading international under long term deals and purchases LNG also from the spot market to re-gasify LNG in its two operational FSRUs having the total capacity of 1.10 billion cubic feet per day (Bcfd).
