Now that the government has made it known that deferring the country's graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status is not in its thinking, businesses should get the message straight. For years, policymakers, businesses, and economists have deliberated on strategies to mitigate post-graduation difficulties. The primary concern has always been the loss of trade benefits and economic preferences that LDC status provides. After all these years businesses in the country are still at unease about the competitive business landscape of the near future. In a series of meetings held recently, businesses have asked for deferment of two to three years to be able to better adjust with the open-field competitive environment. This week the president of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) urged upon the government to defer Bangladesh's graduation from least developed country (LDC) status for at least 2 to 3 years considering the prevailing global and local economic challenges. He made the observations at a Focus Group Discussion on "Implementation of the STS (Science and Technology Studies) for Smooth Transition from LDC Status" jointly organised by the Support to Sustainable Graduation Project (SSGP), Economic Relations Division (ERD) and DCCI. On a similar note, at a press briefing, the president of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) asked the government to take steps for deferment of the scheduled graduation by at least three years.

Karnaphuli Tunnel Service Area will be leased to private sector to deal with heavy losses the Karnaphuli underwater tunnel and the service area have been incurring daily.The housing facilities in the service area, which surrounds the country's first underwater tunnel, have remained mostly unused since it was made open for use in December 2024. Confirming that the accommodation facilities will be given to the private sector, Karnaphuli Tunnel Project Superintendent Engineer Abul Kalam Azad said, "Tenders will be invited soon. Leasing these bungalows to a tourism-focused organisation could help minimise the government's losses." The daily maintenance loss incurred by the tunnel -- inaugurated in 2023 -- is Tk 2.6 million as it has not been receiving the expected traffic, according to sources.The service area has 30 bungalows, a seven-star rest house, a conference center, a health center, a helipad, a mosque, police stations and fire service stations at the Anwara end of the project. There is also a museum on the heritage of Chattogram. Air conditioning systems with a capacity of 1,182 tonnes have been installed in these facilities. The construction works of the project was completed in June last year.

The yield on 10-year Bangladesh Government Treasury Bonds (BGTBs) crossed 12 per cent on Tuesday as banks expressed their unwillingness to invest funds in the securities before the upcoming Eid festival.The cut-off yield, generally known as interest rate, on the BGTBs rose to 12.05 per cent on the day from 10.32 per cent earlier, according to auction results.The government borrowed Tk 40 billion through issuing the BGTBs on the day to partially meet its budget deficit. Currently, five government bonds, with tenures of two, five, 10, 15 and 20 years, respectively, are traded on the market. Besides, four Treasury bills (T-bills) are transacted through an auction to adjust government borrowings from the banking system.The T-bills have 14-day, 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day maturity periods.

A Tk 37 billion green steel project, being constructed by Bashundhara Multi Steel Industries Limited (BMSIL) in the National Special Economic Zone in Mirsarai, Chattogram, is in disarray due to lack of utility and policy support.The project, the biggest single unit steel factory of the country, was launched in 2021 to produce eco-friendly steel with low carbon emissions using the technology of Danieli's MIDA, the Italy-based global steel giant. It was scheduled to start production by mid-2026 but as the authorities concerned fail to provide funding as pledged, meeting the deadline has become uncertain, officials alleged. Bashundhara Multi Steel Industries Ltd. (BMSIL) has secured approval for 3 MMSCFD of natural gas from Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd. (KGDCL), with a gas receiving station already established within the Bashundhara premises inside the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ). Additionally, permissions for a 6 MLD raw water supply and 200MW of power have been granted by the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), respectively.

The government has formed a four-member panel to strengthen the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) and develop the country's capital market.The Financial Institutions Division (FID) issued a notification on Tuesday announcing the committee's formation.The panel will be led by Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, special assistant to the chief adviser, while BSEC Commissioner Farzana Lalarukh will serve as its member-secretary. Other members include Prof M Sadiqul Islam, a faculty member of the finance department at the University of Dhaka, and an additional secretary from the insurance and capital market department of the FID.The committee was formed in response to a request from the BSEC for the FID to investigate an incident of chaos on March 5, when BSEC officials confined the commission's chairman and commissioners to press home their demands. According to the notification, the committee will recommend strategies to strengthen the regulatory and monitoring functions of the stock market, attract investment, and stabilise the market. Non-performing loans (NPLs) in eight banks, including Islami Bank, controlled by S Alam Group during the Awami League regime, have risen by Tk86,347 crore in six months through December, according to the Bangladesh Bank. Previously, the boards of private sector lenders attempted to reduce defaulted loans by concealing information, said central bank officials. After the fall of the Hasina government on 5 August, the Bangladesh Bank dissolved the boards of 14 banks, including those controlled by S Alam, Salman F Rahman, and former land minister Saifuzzaman, removing the lenders from their control. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has deferred its decision about taking further action against Bangladesh's non-observance of three core conventions until next March. According to the ILO's draft decision that is available on its official website, it also urged the government of Bangladesh to fully commit to a timely implementation of its road map of actions in all its priority areas and take all necessary action to that effect. At the 108th ILO session in mid-June in 2019, labour representatives from Italy, Japan, South Africa, Pakistan and Brazil sought an enquiry commission against the government of Bangladesh. চলতি ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরে দেশে অন্তত ৬৮ লাখ টন গম আমদানির প্রয়োজন পড়বে বলে মার্কিন কৃষি বিভাগের (ইউএসডিএ) সর্বশেষ পূর্বাভাসে বলা হয়েছে। এছাড়া পর পর দুটি বন্যায় উৎপাদন ব্যাহত হওয়ায় দেশে চাল উৎপাদন ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়েছে কমপক্ষে ১৫ লাখ টন। সে হিসেবে রক্ষণশীলভাবে হিসাব করলেও চলতি অর্থবছরে সর্বমোট চাল ও গম আমদানির প্রয়োজন পড়ে ৮০ লাখ টনের বেশি। গত ১৭ মার্চ পর্যন্ত দেশে খাদ্যশস্য দুটি আমদানির পরিমাণ ছিল ৪৮ লাখ টনের বেশি। এ অনুযায়ী বাকি তিন মাসে আমদানি করতে হবে ৩২ লাখ টন। ইউএসডিএর পরিসংখ্যানকে আমলে নিয়ে অত্যন্ত রক্ষণশীলভাবে হিসাব করতে গেলেও অর্থবছরের বাকি সময়ে প্রতি মাসে গড়ে ১০ লাখ টনের বেশি খাদ্যশস্য আমদানি করতে হবে। বন্যায় উৎপাদন হ্রাসের প্রেক্ষাপটে বাজার স্থিতিশীল রাখা এবং খোলাবাজারে চাল বিক্রিসহ সরকারের খাদ্যভিত্তিক সামাজিক সুরক্ষা কর্মসূচিগুলো নির্বিঘ্ন রাখতে এ পরিমাণ আমদানির বিকল্প নেই বলে মনে করছেন বিশেষজ্ঞরা।

The tax-intelligence team of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) suspects that Tk 7.21 billion in remittances declared by a taxpayer may be linked to arms purchases by close allies of the ousted prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.The large sum, claimed as remittances in the tax records, was declared by an individual who is not a wage earner. Tax officials suspect that the individual was not an expatriate and showed the money as remittances in the tax documents while residing in the country. According to an investigation report obtained by The Financial Express, the individual, SM Faruqui Hassan, a resident of Kalabagan in Dhaka, is a director of several companies, including Hotel Lake Castle, Protik Developers, Protik Ceramics, and Protik Food & Allied. Faruqui, aged 67, in his tax return declared that Chinese companies, including Norinco International Cooperation Ltd and China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Co Ltd, sent the remittances from China.

He also said the government's demand for funds has increased as its employees' salaries and Eid bonuses are scheduled to be disbursed on March 23. The finance ministry has already announced that all officials and employees working at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, and members of the armed forces will receive their salaries for March along with Eid bonus on March 23.

Bangladesh's trade competitiveness on the global market rises as the taka, which was significantly overvalued against the US dollar in January, reasonably depreciated in February. In the past month of February, the real value of the local currency should have been Tk 124.27, but the nominal value stood at Tk 122, making it marginally overvalued by Tk 2.27, according to Bangladesh Bank calculations. In the previous month, January 2025, the taka was overvalued by Tk 3.67. An overvalued currency negatively impacts the country's trade competitiveness with international partners. The central bank calculates the real effective exchange rate (REER) index that stood at 101.86 in February, down from 103.01 in January. When adjusted using the exchange rate, the real exchange rate should be at Tk 124.27 against one greenback. The central bank or Bangladesh regularly updates the government on the nominal, nominal effective and real effective exchange rates of the taka against an 18-currency basket, which accounts for more than 85 per cent of the country's trade. In economics, a REER value of 100 suggests trade competitiveness is balanced. Any value above 100 indicates an overvalued currency, making exports less competitive.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided not to move forward with the fifth phase of the Health, Population, and Nutrition Sector Programme (5th HPNSP) to avoid financial mismanagement and redundancy.
