Meghna Innova Rubber Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the Meghna Group, has commenced manufacturing tyres for buses and trucks with a Tk1,300 crore investment. This latest expansion positions Meghna, the country's largest bicycle exporter, to reduce reliance on imported bus and truck tyres, thereby saving valuable foreign currency. "Since last month (October), we have started producing 15-inch to 20-inch bias tyres for trucks and buses. Our goal is to meet most of the demand for these tyres in Bangladesh within the next six months," Lutful Bari, chief operating officer of the Meghna Group, told TBS.

About 60 per cent workers of the country's textile and readymade garment (RMG) industry might lose their jobs due to automation despite a significant number of new types of jobs being created by 2041, according to a latest study.According to the study, up to 0.5 million jobs are at risk at the operator level, including those handling single- and double-needle lockstitch machines, chain stitch machines and sewing machine mechanics. Some 10,000 positions of floor supervisors and pattern makers with another 10,000 of quality control, production planning and merchandising might potentially disappear.

Call money becomes a tool for making quick bucks by the banks with the lending rate on the interbank market rising fast, crossing over 10 per cent on average. Thursday's rate marks one of the highest call-money rates in many years, according to bankers. The rates ranged between 9.8 per cent and 11 per cent on the last transaction day, and an average of 10.01 per cent for the day.Central bankers attribute the liquidity strain to increased bets by many banks on government treasuries, which offer risk-free and higher returns compared to other lending avenues.

The interim government has made a move to pay at least $10 million a week to the Indian Adani Power in outstanding electricity bills, according to officials. Bangladesh owes an estimated $850 million to Adani for purchasing electricity through the cross-border power grid, they say. "We've paid $10 million in the first week of November. In the second week, we have paid another $10 million to Adani in outstanding electricity bills," comments a Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) official. "We'll be paying to the Indian conglomerate in the coming weeks too. We hope the company will supply electricity to Bangladesh in full swing."

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 16: The cargo vessel from Pakistan's Karachi, which arrived at Chattogram port on Monday, carried a total of 370 containers, comprising of onions, potato, industrial raw materials, automobile parts and other goods. Different local media reported that the goods transport marks the first-ever direct maritime link between the Bangladesh and Pakistan, but Mohammed Omar Faruk, secretary at the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), said, "The import of goods from Pakistan via Dubai port is not new. Many ships from Dubai port carried Pakistani goods for Bangladesh since long time."

The government plans to include potato in the list of its key essentials meant for 10-million low-income families, according to sources. he issue of selling potato at a subsidized rate came as it has become dearer in the kitchen market in recent months. The interim government has initiated several reforms which are likely to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in some of the country's high potential sectors, according to experts at a town hall conference held today. The sectors in focus are renewable energy, information and communication technology (ICT), pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors.

Businesses have identified inflation, economic downturn, poverty and inequality as the top risks the country will face in the next two years, according to a new survey by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). Conducted among the country's business executives, the survey also highlighted unemployment, energy supply shortages, and chronic disease as major societal risks. The findings were revealed at a dialogue titled "Business Environment Reform in Bangladesh: Agenda for the Interim Government," organized by the CPD at the Brac Centre Inn in Dhaka today (17 November). CPD Executive Director Fahmida Khatun moderated the event attended by the country's top business leaders and economists.
