Bangladesh has the potential to fetch around US$1.0 billion annually from the global carbon market, said global lead for carbon markets and finance of the World Bank Chandra Shekhar Sinha on Saturday. He said the country needs to expedite the process of learning to bag the opportunities as offered globally under carbon trading.Mr Sinha was speaking at a discussion on the sidelines of COP29 conference in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan.“Bangladesh has the ability to facilitate the opportunity to grab the carbon market,” Mr Sinha added.

GPH Ispat Ltd. posted a profit of nearly Tk 66 million in the first quarter (Q1) of FY25, bouncing back from losses in the same period last year, driven by higher sales and a significant reduction in foreign currency losses. The Chittagong-based manufacturer incurred a loss of Tk 164 million in the same quarter last year. The company's earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk 0.14, as against loss of Tk 0.34 per share the previous year, according to its quarterly financial statements published on Thursday. The profit surge was accompanied by a 5.5 per cent jump in revenue to Tk 11.36 billion while finance costs declined by 12 per cent to Tk 1.07 billion, largely due to lower impact from devaluation against foreign currencies.

Domestic credit card spending in Bangladesh registered a robust growth rate of 14.42 per cent in September 2024, reaching Tk 26.68 billion, according to data from the Bangladesh Bank. This surge reflects increased consumer activity compared to Tk 23.32 billion in the previous month of August. Similarly, international transactions outside the country totaled over Tk 4.20 billion during the period in question, showing an increase of 12.88 per cent from over Tk 3.72 billion in August. However, transactions with credit cards issued by foreign entities but used within Bangladesh decreased to Tk 1.11 billion in September from Tk 1.11 billion in its preceding month, indicating a slight decrease of 0.01 per cent.Credit card transactions at department stores saw an increase to Tk 13.17 billion during the period under review from Tk 11.79 billion in August.
