The United States has announced plans to slash Iran’s oil exports by more than 90 per cent as part of former President Donald Trump’s renewed “maximum pressure” campaign, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Friday. Speaking to Fox Business, Bessent said, “We are committed to bringing the Iranians back to 100,000 barrels-a-day of oil exports,” referencing the level seen during Mr Trump’s first term in office. Currently, Iran is exporting between 1.5 million and 1.6 million barrels per day, according to Bessent.

The Financial Express reports (February 11, 2025) that the 'final economic growth for the last fiscal year was lowered by 1.60 percentage points to only 4.22 per cent as the real export earnings were much lower than the projected statistics of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data showed. The BBS preliminary estimation put the FY 24 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at 5.82 per cent. BBS data further confirm that the fall of industrial production and exports are the key reasons for the downward GDP growth rate. Published data indicate that the industrial sector growth of the country was reduced to 3.51 per cent in the final GDP data (estimates published a few months ago was 6.66 per cent) in the preliminary report). Different research groups and experts have attributed the poor industrial growth to political turmoil in 2024, lack of investors' confidence and absence of congenial business climate.

এশিয়ার বাজারে চালের নতুন সরবরাহ এসেছে। এছাড়া খাদ্যশস্যটির আমদানির পরিমাণ এখনো নিম্নমুখী। এসব কারণে ভারত ও ভিয়েতনামে আরো কমেছে রফতানীকৃত চালের দাম। সম্প্রতি এক প্রতিবেদনে এ তথ্য জানিয়েছে বিজনেস রেকর্ডার। ভারতে ৫ শতাংশ খুদযুক্ত সেদ্ধ চালের দাম চলতি সপ্তাহে ছিল টনপ্রতি ৪১৬-৪২৫ ডলার। গত সপ্তাহে দেশটিতে প্রতি টন চাল ৪১৮-৪২৮ ডলারে বেচাকেনা হয়েছে। এছাড়া এ সময় দেশটিতে ৫ শতাংশ খুদযুক্ত সাদা চালের দাম ছিল ৩৯৫-৪০৫ ডলার। কলকাতাভিত্তিক এক রফতানিকারক বলেন, ‘চালের দাম ক্রমাগত হ্রাস পাচ্ছে। দাম স্থির হওয়ার অপেক্ষায় আমদানি কমিয়েছেন আফ্রিকার ব্যবসায়ীরা।’ ভিয়েতনামের ৫ শতাংশ খুদযুক্ত চাল গত বৃহস্পতিবার টনপ্রতি ৩৯৭ ডলারে বেচাকেনা হয়েছে, এক সপ্তাহ আগে যা ছিল টনে ৪০৪ ডলার। ভিয়েতনাম ফুড অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের দেয়া তথ্যানুযায়ী, এটি ২০২২ সালের সেপ্টেম্বরের পর থেকে সর্বনিম্ন দাম। ব্যবসায়ীরা বলছেন, ক্রেতারা চাল আমদানির নতুন চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর করতে তাড়াহুড়ো করছেন না। তারা আরো সরবরাহের অপেক্ষায় আছেন। তাই দাম কমেছে। এদিকে থাইল্যান্ডের ৫ শতাংশ খুদযুক্ত চাল চলতি সপ্তাহে টনপ্রতি ৪১৫-৪২০ ডলারে স্থিতিশীল ছিল। ব্যাংককভিত্তিক এক ব্যবসায়ী বলেন, ‘চালের চাহিদা অনেক কমেছে। এছাড়া ভারত ও ভিয়েতনামে উৎপাদন বেশি হওয়ায় দাম কমছে।’

For the past few years, Bangladeshi consumers have suffered terribly due to price inflation. Ministers and various MPs of the previous government blamed "syndicates" for increasing food prices, especially of chicken and eggs. The Bangladesh Competition Commission subsequently ordered several large poultry companies to pay fines (including my company, Kazi Farms), although these Competition Commission orders were stayed by the High Court. This sequence of events ultimately led to the Department of Agricultural Marketing dictating ceiling prices for eggs and chicken. NEW DELHI, Feb 14: Adani Power has agreed to fully restore supply from a 1,600 MW India power plant to Bangladesh in a few days after a gap of three months but has rejected Dhaka's request for discounts and tax benefits, two sources told Reuters. Billionaire Gautam Adani's company halved supply to Bangladesh on October 31 due to payment delays as the country battled a foreign exchange shortage. This led to the shutdown of one of the two equal-sized units of the plant on November 1, followed by Bangladesh's request to keep supplying only half the power, citing low winter demand and as the payment issue bubbled. Ahead of summer demand and on Bangladesh Power Development Board's (BPDB) request, Adani Power has agreed to resume full supplies by next week, said the two sources who had direct knowledge of the matter but declined to be named as they were not authorized to talk to the media. The plant in eastern India sells only to Bangladesh.

দেশে বর্তমানে লবণ মৌসুমের মধ্য সময়। আবহাওয়া অনুকূল থাকায় প্রত্যাশা অনুসারে উৎপাদন হচ্ছে। তবে দাম উৎপাদন খরচের নিচে নেমে আসায় উদ্বেগে আছেন লবণচাষীরা। কক্সবাজারের বর্তমানে এক মণ লবণ বিক্রি হচ্ছে সর্বোচ্চ ২৪০ টাকায়। কিন্তু মণপ্রতি উৎপাদন খরচ রয়েছে প্রায় ৩০০ টাকার বেশি। কক্সবাজারের মহেশখালীর হোয়ানকের লবণচাষী মোহাম্মদ সাকের বলেন, ‘বর্তমানে লবণের যে দাম আছে তাতে জমির দাম, শ্রমিকের মজুরি ও অন্যান্য খরচ ওঠানো সম্ভব নয়।’ সাকের ছাড়াও কক্সবাজার উপকূলের কুতুবদিয়া, মহেশখালী, চকরিয়া, পেকুয়া, টেকনাফ, কক্সবাজার সদর ও পার্শ্ববর্তী বাঁশখালীর প্রায় ৬৫ হাজার চাষী একই দুশ্চিন্তায় ভুগছেন। কক্সবাজার লবণচাষী কল্যাণ সমিতি সূত্রে জানা গেছে, গত বর্ষা মৌসুমে সর্বোচ্চ মণপ্রতি ৫৫০ টাকায় সংরক্ষিত লবণ বিক্রি হয়েছে। অগ্রহায়ণে চলতি উৎপাদন মৌসুম শুরু হওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে হঠাৎ দরপতন শুরু হয়।

এশিয়ার স্পট মার্কেটে চলতি সপ্তাহে তরলীকৃত প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাসের (এলএনজি) দাম চলতি সপ্তাহে এক বছরেরও বেশি সময়ের মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চে পৌঁছেছে। খাতসংশ্লিষ্টদের মতে, ঠাণ্ডা আবহাওয়ার পূর্বাভাস ও ইউরোপের দেশগুলোয় প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাসের মজুদ নিয়ে উদ্বেগ জ্বালানি পণ্যটির দাম বাড়ার পেছনে ভূমিকা রেখেছে। শিল্পসংশ্লিষ্ট সূত্র জানায়, উত্তর-পূর্ব এশিয়ায় মার্চে সরবরাহের জন্য চলতি সপ্তাহে প্রতি এমএমবিটিইউ এলএনজির দাম ছিল গড়ে ১৬ ডলার ১০ সেন্ট। এলএনজির এমন দাম ২০২৩ সালের নভেম্বরের পর থেকে সর্বোচ্চ। বাজার বিশ্লেষক প্রতিষ্ঠানের এফজিইর গ্যাস অ্যান্ড এলএনজি সাপ্লাই অ্যানালিটিকস বিভাগের পরিচালক সিয়ামাক আদিবি বলেন, ‘ইউরোপের দেশগুলোয় মজুদ থেকে এলএনজির ব্যবহার বেশি হচ্ছে। এটি বর্তমানে এলএনজি বাজারের মূল উদ্বেগ। অঞ্চলটি ফেব্রুয়ারিতে ১ কোটি ১০ লাখ টন এলএনজি আমদানির পথে রয়েছে।’ আর্গাসের হেড অব এলএনজি প্রাইসিং মার্টিন সিনিয়র বলেন, ‘কিছু এলএনজি কার্গো এশিয়া থেকে ইউরোপে স্থানান্তর হয়েছে। ইউরোপে বাড়তি দাম ও এশিয়ায় চাহিদা কম থাকায় অঞ্চলটিতে রফতানি বাড়িয়েছেন ব্যবসায়ীরা। এছাড়া টোকিও ও সিউলে মাসের শেষে শীতল তাপমাত্রার পূর্বাভাস রয়েছে। যদিও পরবর্তী সময়ে আবার মৌসুমি গড় তাপমাত্রা দেখা দেবে।’

Like state-owned commercial banks (SoCBs), the government has decided to issue state guarantees in favour of private commercial banks (PCBs) too to facilitate import of essential commodities, aiming to ensure smooth supply of such items in the local market, sources said. However, such security will be provided in local currency only to the banks with good ratings, they added. The ministries of power, energy and mineral resources, food, commerce, industries, and agriculture can take the next course of action to open letters of credit (LCs) with private banks for importing rice, LNG and fertilizer. The decision came at a meeting held on February 3, with Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair.

The readymade garment industry is believed to have created employment for some 4.0 million workers in the country, but there is no comprehensive database to support the figure. State-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) has re-issued tenders to purchase three spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes for March 05-06 and March 10-11 delivery windows. State-run Petro Bangla will buy one LNG cargo for March 05-06 and two LNG cargoes for March 10-11 delivery windows, a senior RPGCL official said. The RPGCL initially floated these tenders separately over the past couple of weeks and cancelled them due to inadequate number of bidders for one and higher price quotes exceeding US$15.5 per million British thermal units for the remaining, the official said. The government has planned to buy a total of four spot LNG cargoes for March to meet the mounting energy demand especially during the month of Ramadan. The Islamic month of Ramadan is set to begin on March 1 or 2, subject to moon sighting.

Adani Power has agreed to fully restore supply from a 1,600 MW India power plant to Bangladesh in a few days after a gap of three months but has rejected Dhaka's request for discounts and tax benefits, two sources told Reuters. Billionaire Gautam Adani's company halved supply to Bangladesh on October 31 due to payment delays as the country battled a foreign exchange shortage. This led to the shutdown of one of the two equal-sized units of the plant on November 1, followed by Bangladesh's request to keep supplying only half the power, citing low winter demand and as the payment issue bubbled. Ahead of summer demand and on Bangladesh Power Development Board's (BPDB) request, Adani Power has agreed to resume full supplies by next week, said the two sources who had direct knowledge of the matter but declined to be named as they were not authorised to talk to the media. The plant in eastern India sells only to Bangladesh.

The interim government is going to introduce a "dynamic social registry (DSR)" system to receive real-time applications seeking government support from the social safety-net programmes (SSNPs), officials said. The online registration system is expected to check fraudulent and bad-practices in the selection process of beneficiaries and ensure transparency and accountability, said senior officials at the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Cabinet Division. After launching the system, people who are under the poverty line as well as socially displaced and vulnerable can apply and register online for the benefits, said a senior official at the MoF. However, the applicants would have to take the help of a smart phone or internet facilities. Some of the most prevalent issues in the current beneficiary selection process are poor targeting, wasting resources, poor communication among organisations responsible for implementation of the programme, excessive overhead cost, and the complete lack of an assessment framework to measure the results.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is considering letting small-scale exporters without bonded warehouse licences import raw materials duty-free using a bank guarantee for the applicable taxes. This aims to speed up exports, support diversification, and make doing business easier. Initially, the NBR's customs wing is considering offering the benefit to exporters with annual exports under $5 million, aiming for implementation by next June. NBR sources said the revenue authority met with government and private sector representatives on 23 January to explore a feasible approach, forming a committee to develop recommendations within three weeks.

Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) exports have shown moderate growth, with the European Union remaining a key market, according to data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) for the July-January period of the fiscal year 2024-25. The EU represented 50.15% of Bangladesh’s total RMG exports, with a total value of US$11.81 billion, Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of BGMEA, said on Sunday while sharing the data. Shipments to the United States reached US$4.47 billion, accounting for 18.99% of the total share, while the UK market was also significant, with exports valued at US$2.5 billion, equivalent to 10.83% of Bangladesh’s total RMG exports during the specified timeframe.

Mobile financial service (MFS) providers recorded Tk 1.64 trillion (Tk 1,64,740 crore)-worth of transactions in December 2024. This marks the highest monthly transaction amount in the history of mobile financial services in the country, according to the latest report by Bangladesh Bank. In 2024, mobile banking transactions totaled Tk 17.37 trillion (Tk 17,37,000 crore), reflecting a 28.42 per cent increase compared to 2023. The total transactions in 2023 stood at Tk 13.53 trillion (Tk 13,53,000 crore), indicating an increase of Tk 3.84 trillion (Tk 3,84,000 crore) year-on-year. The surge in mobile banking usage is attributed to the convenience it offers in salary disbursement, remittances, and utility bill payments, making it a popular financial tool across both urban and rural areas, reports UNB.
