Global food prices drifted lower in January, mainly due to lower sugar, vegetable oil and meat prices, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Friday. In its first monthly report of the new year, the FAO reported that its broad Food Prices Index dropped 1.6 per cent in January compared to a month earlier. Despite the drop, the index was still 6.2 per cent higher than it was in the same month a year earlier, although it remained 22 per cent below its all-time high, which was reached in 2022.

Bangladesh has experienced modest growth in US apparel imports amidst market volatility in 2024. Bangladesh managed to hold its ground, achieving a slight 0.73 per cent increase in export value to the US during the January-December period of 2024, reaching $7.34 billion. The country also experienced a 4.86 per cent growth in export volume.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway (DEE) company and Dhaka Metropolitan Police will start filing cases against high-speed vehicles on February 21 to keep the country's first expressway safe for people. First Dhaka Elevated Expressway Operation and Maintenance (FDEEO&M) Company Limited made the announcement at a press conference in Dhaka on Saturday.

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) President Mohammad Hatem has said the current tax system discourages investment, and called for substantial reforms in the tax structure. The BKMEA president was speaking on Saturday as the chief guest at the biennial general meeting of the Bangladesh Labour Rights Journalists Forum (BLRJF) at Tamanna World Family Park in Dhaka. BLRJF President Kazi Abdul Hannan chaired the meeting, with its General Secretary Ataur Rahman overseeing the programme.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is set to fully operationalise its Bond Automation system this month, aiming to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability in Bangladesh’s trade operations. NBR sources confirm that the revenue authority was prepared to roll out the system last month but postponed it due to a lack of readiness among businesses. “Due to insufficient preparation from the business community, we have deferred the process by a month,” NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan said at a recent event marking World Customs Day.

India's foreign exchange (forex) reserves rose by 1.05 billion US dollars to $630.607 billion during the week ended Jan. 31, showed the official data released by the country's central bank the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday. This was the second consecutive week when India's forex reserves rose, after declining for several weeks in a row. During the previous week, the forex reserves increased by $5.574 billion, reports Xinhua. India's forex reserves reached an all-time high of $704.885 billion in September last year.

The equity benchmark index rebounded this week as bargain hunters renewed their buying appetite for specific stocks amid fresh optimism fuelled by stronger-than-expected earnings reports from some companies. Buyers remained on the dominant side as investors chased oversold stocks, which they deemed lucrative at the prevailing price levels. The market's upward momentum was evident throughout the week, with the index closing higher on all five trading days.

Most citizens are optimistic about the country's overall economic growth this year and have greater confidence in some key institutions, with the armed forces topping the list in the period of the post-July uprising, says a citizens' confidence survey conducted in January this year. However, they are sceptical about some public institutions, such as the police, and are worried that the current economic hardships may prolong and the cost of living may rise further this year, the survey finds.

দেশের পুঁজিবাজারে গত সপ্তাহে ইতিবাচক প্রবণতা দেখা গেছে। এ সময়ে সূচকের পাশাপাশি লেনদেনও ঊর্ধ্বমুখী ছিল। গত সপ্তাহের পাঁচ কার্যদিবসে প্রধান পুঁজিবাজার ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জের (ডিএসই) সার্বিক সূচক ডিএসইএক্স বেড়েছে ১ দশমিক ৩ শতাংশ। এ সময়ে এক্সচেঞ্জটির গড় লেনদেন বেড়েছে ২৫ দশমিক ৮ শতাংশ। দেশের আরেক পুঁজিবাজার চিটাগং স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে (সিএসই) গত সপ্তাহে সূচক বাড়লেও লেনদেনের পরিমাণ কমেছে।

হিমাগারে আলু সংরক্ষণ ভাড়া কমিয়ে আনতে ব্যাংক ঋণের সুদের হার ও বিদ্যুৎ বিল কমানোর দাবি জানিয়েছেন বাংলাদেশ কোল্ড স্টোরেজ অ্যাসোসিয়েশন। একইসঙ্গে আলু চাষীদের সুরক্ষা প্রদানের জন্য হিমাগার শিল্পকে কৃষিভিত্তিক শিল্প ঘোষণার দাবি জানিয়েছে সংগঠনটি। আজ শনিবার (৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি) রাজধানীতে বাংলাদেশ কোল্ড স্টোরেজ অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের কার্যালয়ে সংগঠনটির পক্ষ থেকে এসব দাবি জানানো হয়।

চীনা অর্থ মন্ত্রণালয় জানিয়েছে, মার্কিন পণ্যের ওপর আরোপিত শুল্কহার ১০-১৫ শতাংশের মধ্যে থাকবে। এটি আগামী ১০ ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে কার্যকর হবে। দেশটি আরো জানিয়েছে, তারা মার্কিন গাড়ি আমদানির ওপর শুল্ক আরোপ করবে। এছাড়া দেশটিতে দুষ্প্রাপ্য ধাতু রফতানি নিয়ন্ত্রণ করবে।

অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের দায়িত্ব গ্রহণের ছয় মাস পূর্ণ হচ্ছে আজ। এ ছয় মাসের পুরো সময়ে দেশে খাদ্য মূল্যস্ফীতির হার ছিল দুই অংকের ঘরে। আন্তর্জাতিক মুদ্রা তহবিলের (আইএমএফ) প্রেসক্রিপশনে নেয়া সংকোচনমূলক মুদ্রানীতি ব্যবসা, বিনিয়োগ ও বেসরকারি খাতে ঋণপ্রবাহে নেতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেললেও মূল্যস্ফীতি নিয়ন্ত্রণে তা কোনোভাবেই কাজে আসেনি। সংস্থাটির প্রেসক্রিপশনে রাজস্ব বাড়াতে জরুরি বেশকিছু খাতে আরোপ করা হয়েছে ভ্যাট। তাতে রাজস্ব না বাড়লেও মূল্যস্ফীতির নাভিশ্বাস আরো চেপে বসেছে। সব মিলিয়ে দেশের অর্থনীতিতে বিগত ছয় মাসে গণমুখী কোনো সংস্কার ঘটেনি। বিগত সরকারের মতো অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের আমলেও দেশের অর্থনীতির গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নীতিপদক্ষেপগুলো আইএমএফের প্রেসক্রিপশননির্ভর রয়ে গেছে।

দেশের গ্যাস খাতে বিগত তিন অর্থবছরে ধারাবাহিকভাবে ভর্তুকি ছিল ৬ হাজার কোটি টাকার কিছু বেশি। চলতি ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরে এ ভর্তুকির প্রাক্কলন করা হয়েছে ১৬ হাজার কোটি টাকার ওপরে। এক বছরের ব্যবধানে গ্যাস খাতে ভর্তুকি এত বেড়ে যাওয়ার কারণ মূলত উচ্চ দামে তরলীকৃত প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাস (এলএনজি) আমদানি বাড়িয়ে দেয়া। অথচ অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের কাছে জনগণের প্রত্যাশা ছিল ব্যয়সাশ্রয়ী জ্বালানি ব্যবহার করে এ খাতের ব্যয় কমিয়ে সাশ্রয়ী ও নিরবচ্ছিন্ন গ্যাস ও বিদ্যুৎ সরবরাহ। কিন্তু বর্তমান সরকারের ছয় মাস অতিবাহিত হতে গেলেও গ্যাসের আমদানি, সরবরাহ সংকট, বকেয়া, ভর্তুকি, ক্যাপাসিটি চার্জ এবং বিদ্যুৎ ও জ্বালানি খাতের অনিয়ম-দুর্নীতির বিরুদ্ধে কার্যকর কোনো উদ্যোগ নেই। বরং বিগত সরকারের দেখানো পথে হেঁটে এ খাতে আরো বিপর্যয়কর পরিস্থিতি তৈরি করা হচ্ছে বলে মনে করেন জ্বালানি খাত বিশেষজ্ঞরা।

২০২৪ সালে ৮৬০ বিলিয়ন ইউয়ান বা প্রায় ১১ হাজার ৮৩ কোটি ডলার আয় করেছে টেলিকম সরঞ্জাম নির্মাতা হুয়াওয়ে। এ সময় প্রতিষ্ঠানটি আগের বছরের একই সময়ের তুলনায় ২২ শতাংশ প্রবৃদ্ধি দেখেছে। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিষেধাজ্ঞার পরও হুয়াওয়ে শক্ত অবস্থানে রয়েছে বলে সম্প্রতি মন্তব্য করেন চেয়ারম্যান লিয়াং হুয়া। ২০২৪ সালের আয় হুয়াওয়ের ইতিহাসে দ্বিতীয় সর্বোচ্চ। এর আগে ২০২০ সালে সর্বোচ্চ আয় ছিল ৮৯১ বিলিয়ন ইউয়ান। ওই বছরেই প্রথমবারের মতো চীনা জায়ান্ট কোম্পানির মোবাইল ফোন ও আন্তর্জাতিক কার্যক্রমে নিষেধাজ্ঞা আরোপ করে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র।

Insurance regulator now wants requisite power to adequately punish errant insurers for bringing them under control in the wake of widespread allegations of noncompliance, especially non-settlement of huge claims of policyholders. To this end, the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) will soon send a proposal to the government for amendment of the Insurance Act 2010, officials have said.

New investments in local start-ups declined significantly in 2024 compared to the previous year mainly due to political turmoil, economic uncertainties, and changing global trends, according to a report. The volume of new funding fell by around 43 per cent to $41.3 million last year from $72.0 million in 2023, said the report titled "Bangladesh Start-up Investments Report 2024: Year in Review" and published recently by management consulting firm Light Castle Partners.
