Bangladesh and Russia have reached an agreement on a mechanism to repay the principal and interest of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant loan, bringing clarity to the long-pending issue after extended negotiations, according to officials from the Economic Relations Division (ERD).Under the agreement, a foreign currency account will be opened in the name of the Russian government at Bangladesh's state-owned Sonali Bank's Local Branch in Dhaka. The Russian Ministry of Finance will manage the account and receive payments going forward with the account set to open following final approval from the Russian central government.

The World Trade Centre (WTC) will make its dashing footprint in Dhaka with the silhouette of an under-construction 50-storey skyscraper near the scenic Hatirjheel Lake in the metropolis. The primary infrastructure development work on the TK 50-billion project has already started, said Shakawath Hossain, chief executive officer (CEO) of Unique Hotel and Resorts PLC (UHL), told the FE. The white paper on Bangladesh's economy says the country has already fallen into the middle-income trap as employment and productivity data conflict with the past years' higher-growth narratives. Bangladesh started falling into the trap in the fiscal year 2013-14 and is now already trapped, according to Dr Zahid Hussain, a member of the white paper committee. Referring to World Bank (WB) surveys, the white paper said other countries fell into the trap upon reaching the per capita income threshold of $8,000, but Bangladesh is still below that. "An inverse relationship between the shares of industry in employment and production in quarterly data, stagnating or declining productivity in industry, the gross domestic product (GDP) intensity of exports, stagnating private investment, public expenditures on health and education, and governance indicators together signal entrapment, if not entropy," the white paper said.

Power-sector reforms can save Bangladesh US$1.2 billion, equivalent to Tk 138 billion, annually through reduction in state subsidy to the power board, according to a research finding. This could be realised by shifting half of the industrial demand met by captive generators to the national power grid, adding 3,000 megawatts (MW) of renewables, reducing load-shedding to 5.0 per cent from the FY24 level, and limiting transmission and distribution losses to 8.0 per cent, says the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) in a report titled 'Fixing Bangladesh's Power Sector'. "With the reserve margin hovering around 61.3 per cent, Bangladesh's power sector has an overcapacity problem, which contributes to the BPDB's persisting subsidy burden," reads the report, released Wednesday.

Export earnings from the country's readymade garment (RMG) sector recorded a growth of 12.34 per cent year on year to fetch US$16.11 billion during the first five months of the current fiscal year, pushing the overall growth to 11.76 percent. RMG that contributed more than 80 per cent of Bangladesh's overall export earnings brought US$3.30 billion in November 2024 which was 16.25 per cent higher than the November 2023 earnings of US$2.84 billion, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data released on Wednesday. The sector witnessed 2.89 per cent growth in last July, followed by 7.20 per cent in August, 14.61 per cent in September and 22.80 per cent in October respectively. The overall export earnings, however, during July--November period of the current fiscal year stood at US$19.90 billion recording an 11.67 per cent growth compared to that of US$17.81 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal of 2023-24, according to data.

Local refiners in recent months have pressed the government several times to increase edible-oil prices in the light of the substantial price rise in the international market, industry insiders say. The Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners' and Vanaspati Manufacturers' Association (BVORVMA) urged the commerce ministry in June and November this year, and also in between, to adjust soybean and palm oil prices, but got no response. As a result, the edible oil industry has been facing losses, the association claimed. It also explained to the ministry prices should be increased as the materials needed for production and other relevant purposes have become pricier in the local market.

দেশের বৃহৎ গ্যাসভিত্তিক বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র ৭১৮ মেগাওয়াট কম্বাইন্ড সাইকেল পাওয়ার প্লান্টটি নারায়ণগঞ্জের মেঘনাঘাটে অবস্থিত। বাণিজ্যিকভাবে উৎপাদনের জন্য প্রায় এক বছর আগে এটি প্রস্তুত হয়েছে। এরই মধ্যে শেষ করেছে আনুষ্ঠানিক সব কার্যক্রমও। এটি নির্মাণে জাপানিজ কোম্পানি জাপানস এনার্জি ফর আ নিউ এরা (জেরা) প্রায় ১০০ কোটি ডলার বিনিয়োগ করেছে। কিন্তু গ্যাস সরবরাহের নিশ্চয়তা না পাওয়ায় কেন্দ্রটি নিয়ে বিনিয়োগকারীদের মধ্যে উদ্বেগ তৈরি হয়েছে বলে নির্ভরযোগ্য একটি সূত্রে জানা গেছে। এদিকে উৎপাদনে না গেলেও চুক্তি অনুযায়ী পরিশোধ করতে হচ্ছে ঋণের কিস্তি।

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has instructed all scheduled banks or lenders operating in the country to submit the detailed liability statements of Thermax Group and its associate entities. On Tuesday, the Department of Off-Site Supervision of BB sent a formal letter to the managing directors and chief executive officers of these banks. The letter stated: "You are hereby instructed, with the approval of the appropriate authority, to submit the liability details of all entities under Thermax Group as of 30/11/2024 by 04/12/2024." On June 30, 2024, in Narsingdi, workers from Adury Apparels Ltd under Thermex Group blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, demanding payment for three months of overtime and outstanding wages. At that time, the workers claimed that the factory authorities have not been paying overtime dues for the past three months.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has set a revised target for Bangladesh to increase its tax-GDP ratio by 0.6-percentage points for the current fiscal year. This increase equates to an additional Tk 930 billion in revenue. Currently, Bangladesh's tax-GDP ratio stands at 7.9 per cent, one of the lowest in the region. Under the government's commitment to the IMF, the tax-GDP ratio is expected to increase by 0.5 percentage points each fiscal year. The adjustment in the target occurred during a meeting held at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) premises, following the NBR's failure to meet last year's target.

It last traded at $100,027 as of 0240 GMT, up 2.2 per cent on the previous session, after earlier rising as high as $100,277, according to a Reuters report. "We're witnessing a paradigm shift. After four years of political purgatory, bitcoin and the entire digital asset ecosystem are on the brink of entering the financial mainstream," said Mike Novogratz, founder and CEO of US crypto firm Galaxy Digital.

Despite the fact that the government has waived customs duties on six essential commodities to curb soaring prices, imports have remained stagnant, leading to only marginal decreases in the prices of a few items. Importers and traders say the market remains stable due to the government's import permits and duty reductions. The inflation rate jumped to a record high at 11.38 per cent in November, 0.51 percentage points higher than the previous month of October, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). The inflation, both headline and core, increased in November despite the central bank's efforts to curb it through tight monetary policy. This erodes the real income of people. However, the point-to-point inflation rate climbed to 11.38 per cent in November, up from 10.87 per cent in October hitting hard the limited income bracket of people. Food inflation surged to 13.8 per cent during the month. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also edged higher, reaching 9.39 per cent in November compared to 9.34 per cent in the previous month. The BBS released the data on Thursday morning, reflecting the continuing challenge of managing price pressures in the economy.
