দেশের বৃহত্তম পাইকারি বাজার নারায়ণগঞ্জের নিতাইগঞ্জে সব ধরনের ডালের দাম নিম্নমুখী হয়েছে। গত দুই-আড়াই মাসের ব্যবধানে খাদ্যশস্যটির দাম কমেছে কেজিতে ৩-২০ টাকা। ব্যবসায়ীরা বলছেন, নিম্নমুখী চাহিদা পণ্যটির দাম কমার পেছনে ভূমিকা রেখেছে। গতকাল নিতাইগঞ্জে সরজমিনে গিয়ে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা যায়, বাজারে বর্তমানে দেশী মসুর ডাল বেচাকেনা হচ্ছে ১১২-১১৪ টাকা কেজি দরে। তিন মাস আগেও যা ছিল কেজিতে ১১৬-১১৮ টাকা। সে হিসাবে দেশী মসুর ডালের দাম কমেছে কেজিতে প্রায় ৪ টাকা। বর্তমানে দিল্লি সুপার (৩০ কেজির বস্তা) বাজারে বেচাকেনা হচ্ছে ১১৮ টাকা কেজি দরে। গত দুই মাস আগে একই ডালের দাম ছিল কেজিপ্রতি ১২২ টাকা। ফাটি মসুর ডাল বাজারে বেচাকেনা হচ্ছে ৯৩ টাকা কেজি দরে। একই ডাল দুই মাস আগেও বেচাকেনা হয়েছিল ১০৬ টাকায়। নিতাইগঞ্জে অ্যাঙ্কর ডালের দাম কমেছে কেজিতে প্রায় ৫ টাকা। বর্তমানে তা বাজারে বেচাকেনা হচ্ছে ৫১ টাকা কেজি দরে।

A signal comes from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) about considering 'letter of comfort' from the IMF to extend budget-support finance to Bangladesh. ADB Vice President Yingming Yang gave the indication in a meeting with Finance Adviser of the interim government Dr Salehuddin Ahmed Sunday on the sidelines of the 58th ADB annual meeting in the Italian city. Talking to the FE writer on the meeting premises, Dr Salehduddin said signing agreement with the International Monetary Fund may not be so important if the ADB gets the green signal from the IMF on macroeconomic stability of Bangladesh. The Finance Adviser said as the IMF does due diligence on macroeconomic issues, so it's a positive signal that is important for budget support of ADB. "Scope of soft landing has already been squeezed gradually as we have exhausted it," he said. Bangladesh has proposed to go for Ordinary Capital Resources (OCR), but the ADB found it has limited scope as other countries are also demanding the same, he added. "Still, the ADB high-ups have assured us of considering the proposal," he said, adding, "We told the ADB that our negotiation with IMF going on and about to reach in a decision." The ADB wants Bangladesh to sort out the IMF issues. "We won't rush to signing agreement accepting IMF's loan conditions," said the finance adviser.

Bangladesh's maiden oil-carrying pipeline is all set to transport diesel from the port city of Chattogram to Narayanganj depots from next week as its pre-commissioning has already kicked off, said officials. "After completing the project work, we are now carrying out pre-commissioning of the pipeline," state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) Chairman Md Amin Ul Ahsan told The Financial Express Sunday. Formal commissioning and commercial operation of the 246-kilometre, environment-friendly pipeline will be initiated within the next couple of weeks, he said. "We are eyeing for commissioning the pipeline on May 13," said Ahsan. He expects the power, energy and mineral resources adviser, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, will inaugurate the operations of the pipeline, which is a milestone for smooth transportation of the country's oil products. The pipeline is expected to save fuel transportation costs worth around Tk 2.36 billion annually, said Ahsan. A three-layer extruded polyethylene coating will safeguard the pipeline from leaks. The pipeline is expected to significantly cut oil delivery time to end users, as well as avoid traffic congestion, accidents, and other unforeseen bottlenecks during the transportation of oil, including natural disasters and political unrest.

দেশে বেসরকারি খাতের ঋণ প্রবৃদ্ধি বেশ কয়েক বছর ধরেই মন্থর। মুদ্রানীতিতে এ খাতে ঋণ প্রবৃদ্ধির যে লক্ষ্যমাত্রা ধরা হচ্ছিল, সেটি অধরা থাকছিল। তবে চলতি অর্থবছরে এ মন্থরতা তীব্র হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের তথ্য বলছে, চলতি ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরের প্রথম আট মাসে (জুলাই থেকে ফেব্রুয়ারি) দেশের বেসরকারি খাতে ঋণপ্রবাহ বেড়েছে মাত্র ২ দশমিক ৬৩ শতাংশ। গত অর্থবছরের একই সময়ে প্রবৃদ্ধির হার ছিল ৫ দশমিক ৫৩ শতাংশ। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের তথ্য পর্যালোচনা করে দেখা যায়, ২০২৪ সালের জুনের শেষে বেসরকারি খাতে ব্যাংক ঋণের স্থিতি ছিল ১৬ লাখ ৪১ হাজার ২২৯ কোটি টাকা। চলতি বছরের ফেব্রুয়ারির শেষে ঋণের এ স্থিতি বেড়ে ১৬ লাখ ৮৪ হাজার ৩৮৪ কোটি টাকায় উন্নীত হয়েছে। সে হিসাবে আট মাসে বেসরকারি খাতে ঋণ স্থিতি বেড়েছে মাত্র ৪৩ হাজার ১৫৫ কোটি টাকা। আর ঋণ প্রবৃদ্ধির হার ২ দশমিক ৬৩ শতাংশ।

দেশে জনসংখ্যার অনুপাতে বাড়ছে না খাদ্যশস্যের উৎপাদন। কৃষিজমি হ্রাস, উচ্চফলনশীল জাত উদ্ভাবন ও সম্প্রসারণের অভাব, কৃষি উপকরণের মূল্যবৃদ্ধি এবং সে অনুপাতে কৃষক আয় করতে না পারাসহ নানা কারণ কৃষি উৎপাদনে প্রভাব ফেলছে। আর তাতে গত কয়েক বছর দেশের কৃষি খাত এক প্রকার অচলায়তনে রূপ নিয়েছে বলে মনে করছেন খাতসংশ্লিষ্টরা। এ পরিস্থিতি চলতে থাকলে বড় ধাক্কা লাগতে পারে দেশের খাদ্য ব্যবস্থাপনায়। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কৃষি বিভাগের তথ্যমতে, ২০১৪-১৫ অর্থবছরে দেশে ধানের আবাদ হয়েছিল ১ কোটি ১৭ লাখ ৯০ হাজার হেক্টর জমিতে। ২০২০-২১ অর্থবছরে তা কমে দাঁড়ায় ১ কোটি ১৫ লাখ হেক্টরে। আর সর্বশেষ ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরে আবাদকৃত জমি ১ কোটি ১৪ লাখ হেক্টরে নেমে আসে। অর্থাৎ সর্বশেষ পাঁচ বছরে আবাদকৃত জমির পরিমাণ কমেছে প্রায় ২ শতাংশ। এভাবে প্রতি বছরই কৃষিজমির পরিমাণ কমছে। এর বিপরীতে পাঁচ বছরে হেক্টরপ্রতি ফলন বেড়েছে কেবল ৪ শতাংশ। আর চাল উৎপাদন মাত্র ২ শতাংশ বেড়েছে।

The sector's earnings also rose further to US$1.1 billion in fiscal year 2021-22, according to the EPB data. However, the earnings from the exports of farm products declined to US$827.1 million and US$964 million in the fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24 respectively. সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে দেশের পুঁজিবাজারে টানা দরপতন পরিলক্ষিত হচ্ছে। এ অবস্থায় চারদিন পর গতকাল দেশের পুঁজিবাজারে সূচকে কিছুটা ঊর্ধ্বমুখিতা দেখা গেছে। এদিন প্রধান পুঁজিবাজার ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জের (ডিএসই) সার্বিক সূচক ডিএসইএক্স বেড়েছে দশমিক ৭৮ শতাংশ। পাশাপাশি এক্সচেঞ্জটির দৈনিক লেনদেনের পরিমাণও কিছুটা বেড়েছে। দেশের আরেক পুঁজিবাজার চিটাগং স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে (সিএসই) গতকাল সূচক ও লেনদেন দুটোই কমেছে। বাজার পর্যালোচনায় দেখা যায়, গতকাল লেনদেনের শুরুর আধা ঘণ্টা পর্যন্ত ইতিবাচক অবস্থানে ছিল সূচক। শেয়ার বিক্রির চাপে এরপর থেকে পয়েন্ট হারাতে শুরু করে সূচক। তবে বেলা ১টা থেকে শেয়ার কেনার চাপ বাড়তে থাকায় সূচকে পয়েন্ট যোগ হতে থাকে, যা লেনদেন শেষ হওয়া পর্যন্ত অব্যাহত ছিল। এতে দিন শেষে ডিএসইএক্স সূচক ৩৮ পয়েন্ট বেড়ে ৪ হাজার ৯৫৬ পয়েন্টে দাঁড়িয়েছে। নির্বাচিত কোম্পানির সূচক ডিএস-৩০ দিনের ব্যবধানে ১১ পয়েন্ট বেড়ে ১ হাজার ৮৩৪ পয়েন্টে অবস্থান করছে। শরিয়াহ সূচক ডিএসইএস গতকাল ৬ পয়েন্ট বেড়ে ১ হাজার ১১০ পয়েন্টে দাঁড়িয়েছে। গতকাল সূচকের উত্থানে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভূমিকা রেখেছে ব্যাংক এশিয়া, পূবালী ব্যাংক, বেক্সিমকো ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালস, বিকন ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালস ও ইউনাইটেড কমার্শিয়াল ব্যাংকের (ইউসিবি) শেয়ার। ডিএসইতে গতকাল ৩৯৯ কোটি টাকার সিকিউরিটিজ লেনদেন হয়েছে।

Authorities concerned have sought time extension for a support project of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway (DEE) that was supposed to be completed in three and a half years but 25 per cent of the works are yet to be completed after more than 14 years since its adoption in 2011. Now, the Bridges Division of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges sought another extension, requesting an additional one and a half years to complete the remaining work by December next year as the existing deadline expires next month (June 2025). If approved by the Planning Commission (PC), the total implementation period to be required for such a project would be 16 years, said officials at the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA). Officials said only 75 per cent work has been completed so far. To finish the remaining work, the Bridges Division has requested an additional 18 months without any increase in costs. According to the letter to the PC, the construction work of the project under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) modality has slowed down due to legal disputes among the investor company's shareholders, leading the Chinese Exim Bank and ICBC to halt financing from January 2024.

Power producer Summit Power reported a 44 per cent plunge in profit for the third quarter of FY25, as its three plants, which started operating under 'No Electricity, No Payment' arrangement, received no capacity charge during the period. Hence, the earnings per share (EPS) fell sharply to Tk 0.39 in the January-March quarter from Tk 0.69 in the same quarter a year ago, according to a stock exchange filing on Sunday. Private sector power producers, such as Summit Power Limited, have been experiencing a decline in business as the government has changed its strategy to generate electricity and mitigate the growing demand. Most of the existing power producers have failed to secure renewal of power supply agreements with the government upon the expiry of previous contracts. Quick rental power plants are being phased out because they are costly - partially for capacity charge payments --, inefficient, and rely heavily on imported fuels. The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Sunday reduced the price for a mass-used 12kg LPG cylinder by Tk 19 to Tk 1,431 for May. Consumers can also buy liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in various cylinder sizes - ranging from 5.5 kg to 45 kg - at proportionately lower prices from the private sector. However, the commission raised the price of per 12.5kg cylinder of the state-owned LP Gas's LPG by 19.56 per cent to Tk 825 from previous Tk 690. BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the new LPG price to the media at the BERC office in the capital's Kawran Bazar on Sunday.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Sunday announced plans to expand its support to long-term food and nutrition security in Asia and the Pacific by US$26 billion, bringing its total funding for food security initiatives to $40 billion over 2022-2030. The proposed assistance would fund a comprehensive program spanning the entire food production process -- from farming and processing -- to distribution and consumption, said an ADB news release. Through financing and policy support for governments and companies, the programme aims to help Asia and the Pacific generate diverse and nutritious food, create jobs, reduce environmental impacts, and promote resilient agricultural supply chains, according to the press release. "Unprecedented droughts, floods, extreme heat, and degraded natural resources are undermining agricultural production, while at the same time threatening food security and rural livelihoods," the release said, quoting the ADB President Masato Kanda. "This expanded support will help countries alleviate hunger, improve diets, and protect the natural environment, while providing opportunities for farmers and agribusinesses," he said at ADB's 58th Annual Meeting in Milan. The ADB head also quoted as saying: "It (support) will drive change across the entire food value chain, from how food is grown and processed to how it is distributed and consumed."

The Embassy has simplified ocumentation requirements under which local Bangladeshi travel agencies with valid business licenses may issue guarantee letters for travelers seeking medical treatment in China regarding bank deposit certificates and proof of kinship, exempting them from obtaining the certificates authenticated by the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under the 'Dedicated "Green Channel" Services" the Embassy and the Visa Application Service Center (3rd Floor, Praasad Trade Center, 6 Kemal Ataturk Avenue, Banani, Dhaka) have established dedicated hotlines (Embassy 02222260103, 01708464809; Visa Center: 02226603261) and a WhatsApp service group (01885041364) for medical visa inquiries.

Yields on treasury bills (T-bills) fell slightly Sunday as banks expressed willingness to invest their excess liquidity in short-term securities. The cut off yield, generally known as interest rate, on the 91-Day T-bills came down to 11.61 per cent on the day from 11.64 per cent of the previous level while the yield on 182-Day T-bills fell to 11.80 per cent from 11.87 per cent from earlier level. The yield on 364-Day T-bills came down to 11.81 per cent on the day from 11.90 per cent earlier, according to the auction results. "Most banks are now interested in investing their excess funds in the government securities, as liquidity inflow is increasing in the market," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told The Financial Express (FE). A higher inflow of inward remittances, along with the central bank's purchase of US dollars from the market, is contributing to increased liquidity in the market, the central banker explained. He also predicted that the existing trend of yields on T-bills may continue in the coming weeks.

The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) plans to float tenders in a couple of weeks to buy two bulk carriers from China with its own funds. "I am ready with tender documents. Waiting for the ministry's approval to float," BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek told The Financial Express. He returned from China last week after visiting a shipyard named New Dayang Shipbuilding Co Ltd along with Shipping Secretary Mohammed Yousuf. Mr Malek earlier visited another shipyard named Jiangsu Yangzi-Mitsui Shipbuilding Co Ltd in December last year. The BSC's technical team earlier also visited two more shipyards to see various under-construction ships. "We visited the shipyards having the potential to supply ships, and they are top builders worldwide," said Mr Malek. The majority of the bulk carrier ships are being constructed in China, he said. He also said a plan is there to seek proposals from the shipbuilders who have near-ready ships so that they can supply vessels without a long delay. According to him, the BSC plans to buy solid bulk carriers to carry products like coal and fertiliser.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy in Dhaka has resumed issuing visit visas for Bangladeshis as the process expedited following bilateral talks. UAE Ambassador to Bangladesh ALHmoudi informed Lutfey Siddiqi, special envoy to the chief adviser, on Sunday that the UAE Embassy in Dhaka is issuing 30-50 visit visas daily. He said this during a meeting with Mr Siddiqi at the latter’s office in Dhaka. This came amid significant progress in resuming visa issuance for Bangladeshi nationals following sustained diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Additionally, bulk visa processing for business delegations has been expedited, enhancing people-to-people and commercial exchanges, said a spokesperson for the CA Office. In a major development, the UAE Ministry of Human Resources has reactivated its online system for skilled employment visas. As a result, visas for professionals such as marketing managers and hotel staff have been issued in recent weeks. Furthermore, 500 visas for security guards have already been granted, with another 1,000 approved and set for issuance shortly. It is expected that the UAE will progressively ease visa restrictions further over time. The Ambassador also assured continued flexibility in considering humanitarian and compassionate cases flagged by the Bangladeshi authorities.

Designed as raised, ventilated structures built with bamboo, wood, and tin sheets, these model units allow farmers to store potatoes and other vegetables naturally, reducing dependence on costly and often monopolized cold storage facilities. Olympic Industries is in an enviable position when it comes to cash reserves - Tk 10 billion as of March this year - and it has been leveraging that to strengthen its market position even further. In its sustained drive to accelerate business growth, it has recently decided to purchase 503.5-decimal more lands adjacent to its factories at Kanchpur and Narayanganj out of its retained earnings. The purchases will cost the company Tk 222.5 million. Meanwhile, in the first nine months through March of FY25, Olympic Industries gained a more than 10 per cent year-on-year growth in revenue to Tk 21.43 billion. But profit rose only 1.27 per cent to Tk 1.59 billion due to cost escalation and an increase in VAT since January this year. "The land acquisition is part of a larger strategic investment plan for future business expansion," said Mintu Kumar Das, company secretary of Olympic Industries. The latest announcement of land acquisition came after the company bought six pieces of land comprising 273 decimals at Kanchpur and Narayanganj at the expense of Tk 170 million two months back. The company has been investing in land to develop and diversify its product line. Mr Das said they had witnessed a growth in demand, which was why they were focusing on building capacity to produce more and new food products in near future.
