Ceramic manufacturers have urged the government to halt gas price hikes, ensure a stable energy supply, and remove the supplementary duty on tiles and sanitary products to safeguard the domestic industry. "Gas prices for the ceramic industry have already increased by 345% over the past nine years, with a 150% hike in 2023 alone, raising production costs by 18-20%," said Mainul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCMEA), today (4 February). Reading out a written statement at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital, he warned that the proposed 152% price hike would drive up costs by another 30-35%, making it difficult for manufacturers to compete with imports.

The country's export earnings in the first seven months of the fiscal year 2024-25 increased by 11.68 per cent to US$28.97 billion, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data released on Monday. Bangladesh fetched US $25.94 billion during the July-January period of the last fiscal year. The single performance in January 2025 showed a 5.70 per cent year-on-year rise reaching $4.44 billion compared to $4.2 billion in January 2024, EPB data revealed. Readymade garments (RMG) remained the dominant force behind export earnings, and the sector recorded a 12.00 per cent growth in the July-January period of the current fiscal of 2024-25.

The number of food items subject to price hikes this month has reached 1,656 in Japan, exceeding 1,000 items for the second consecutive month, according to a private research firm. A survey conducted by Teikoku Databank covering 195 major food manufacturers in Japan revealed that 1,656 food items will see price increases in February, following a similar trend in January. By category, processed foods such as frozen foods and chilled noodles account for the largest portion at 589 items, followed by seasonings such as barbecue sauce at 357 items and confectionery including jelly, cereal products, and chocolate at 329 items, reports Reuters.

ভোমরা স্থলবন্দর দিয়ে ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরের প্রথম সাত মাসে (জুলাই-জানুয়ারি) গত বছরের তুলনায় শুকনা মরিচ আমদানি বেড়েছে ১ হাজার ৬৬৩ টন। তবে আমদানি বাড়লেও এর কো‌নো প্রভাব‌ পড়েনি সাতক্ষীরার খুচরা বাজা‌রে। এখনো ঊর্ধ্বমুখী দামে পণ্যটি বেচাকেনা হচ্ছে। গতকাল সাতক্ষীরা জেলা সদ‌রের ক‌য়েক‌টি মসলা আড়ত ও খুচরা বিক্রয় প্রতিষ্ঠান ঘুরে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। গতকাল এ মসলা বাজা‌রে শুকনা ম‌রিচ খুচরা বি‌ক্রি হয় প্রতি কে‌জি ৪০০ টাকা দ‌রে। এক মাস আ‌গেও একই দামে পণ্যটি বেচাকেনা হয়েছিল। সাতক্ষীরা সুলতানপুর বড় বাজা‌রের সরদার স্টো‌রের স্বত্বা‌ধিকারী আবদুল হা‌কিম জানান, আমদা‌নি বাড়লেও পাইকারিতে শুকনা মরিচের দাম কমেনি। ফ‌লে খুচরা বাজারে কোনো প্রভাব পড়ছে না।এ বিষয়ে সাতক্ষীরা জেলার দা‌য়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত কৃ‌ষি বিপণন কর্মকর্তা এসএম আব্দুল্লাহ ব‌ণিক বার্তা‌কে জানান, দাম না কমার ব্যাপারে খোঁজ নিয়ে যথাযথ পদক্ষেপ নেয়া হবে। এদিকে ভোমরা শুল্ক স্টেশ‌নের রাজস্ব বিভাগ থে‌কে জানা গে‌ছে, চলতি অর্থবছরের জুলাই-জানুয়ারি পর্যন্ত এ বন্দর দি‌য়ে শুকনা মরিচ আমদা‌নি হয়েছে ৩২ হাজার ৯২১ টন। যার আমদা‌নি মূল্য ছিল ৮৮৪ কো‌টি ২৭ লাখ টাকা। গত অর্থবছরের একই সময় ৭৮৫ কো‌টি ৬৯ লাখ টাকা মূল্যের মোট ৩১ হাজার ২৫৮ টন শুকনা মরিচ আমদানি করা হয়েছিল।

Regulatory policy on remittance netting is allegedly skewed towards public banks on exchange rate as private bankers are bound within the fixed upper ceiling while the government lenders offering higher rates. Bangladesh Bank (BB) is now favoring the state-owned commercial banks for collection of more remittances even bypassing the upper ceiling of the existing managed floating exchange rate, bankers and officials said. On the other hand, the country's central bank has intensified its regulation over many of the private commercial banks to make them purchase remittance within the upper ceiling at Tk 122 a dollar of the recently introduced reference-rate-driven taka-dollar exchange mechanism, according to them. The market players say such "dual policy" of the banking regulator on the foreign-exchange market has been observed since mid-January 2025 and the public banks are now offering rates as high as Tk 122.80 a dollar to the remitters.

A major project gets finally gets the go-ahead to expand and modernize Mongla seaport with enhanced container-handling capacity under a plan to upgrade it to a regional shipping hub. The Mongla Port Authority, under the Ministry of Shipping, will implement the project by December 2028 at a total cost of over 4.07 billion that includes a loan of about Tk 3.56 billion. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in a meeting held at the NEC auditorium in Dhaka with Chief Adviser of the post-uprising government Dr Muhammad Yunus in the chair gave approval for this one and 12 other projects. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud emphasized the port's geopolitical significance and said the government is committed to developing Mongla Port into a regional hub by strengthening its container-handling infrastructure.

The current monetary policy was set in motion at a time when the economy was in a dire state. The inflation rate was trending upwards alarmingly and the national output was sluggish. Amidst rampant corruption and large-scale looting of the economy by the gangs of Hasina the income of the ordinary people was eroding, and a large number of people were falling into poverty. In this milieu the implementation of the monetary policy did not show much result, on the contrary the economy fell into a cesspool of spiraling inflation and low growth. In this desperate economic and suffocating political situation the student community miraculously organized the entire national population in a street protest to successfully dislodge the utterly incompetent and predatory government. A new government, led by the widely respected Nobel laureate, Doctor Mohammad Yunus, took over which gave the people much hope of a recovery. His government is apparently working hard to fulfil its promise.

The yields on treasury bills (T-bills) dropped below 11 per cent on Sunday, showing signs of a fall in banks' deposit and lending rates in the near future, market insiders said.The interest rates on the T-bills fell below the level after more than one year as the banks expressed willingness to invest their excess liquidity in short-term securities. The cutoff yield, generally known as interest rate, on the 91-Day T-bills came down to 10.85 per cent on the day from 11.13 per cent of the previous level while the yield on 182-Day T-bills fell to 10.96 per cent from 11.30 per cent from earlier level. However, the yield on 364-Day T-bills came down to 10.99 per cent on the day from 11.55 per cent earlier, according to the auction results.

বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে আহতদের চিকিৎসা করতে বিদেশী চিকিৎসকদের ফি, হোটেল ভাড়া, আপ্যায়ন ব্যয়কে ভ্যাট অব্যাহতি দিয়েছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। রোববার (২ ফেব্রুয়ারি) এনবিআরের ভ্যাট বিভাগ এ সংক্রান্ত আদেশ জারি করেছে। এনবিআরের প্রজ্ঞাপনে বলা হয়েছে, বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে আহত রোগীদের চিকিৎসা সেবা দেয়ার জন্য স্বাস্থ্য অধিদফতর বা সংশ্লিষ্ট হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষের আমন্ত্রণে বিদেশি চিকিৎসকদের অনুকূলে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে ফি, হোটেল ভাড়া, আপ্যায়ন ব্যয়কে ভ্যাট অব্যাহতি দেয়া হলো। ২০১২ সালের মূল্য সংযোজন কর ও সম্পূরক শুল্ক আইনের ১২৬ ধারার ৩ নম্বর উপধারার ক্ষমতাবলে এই অব্যাহতি দিয়েছে এনবিআর। জানা গেছে, চিকিৎসকদের ফির ওপর আগেও ভ্যাট ছিল না। তবে হোটেল ভাড়া, আপ্যায়ন—এসব খাতে ১৫ শতাংশ ভ্যাট ছিল।

United Power Generation & Distribution Company secured a 5 per cent year-on-year growth in profit to Tk 2.92 billion in the second quarter of FY25, driven by higher revenue amid bulk power tariff hike. The power generation company's consolidated earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk 4.98 in the second quarter, up from Tk 4.71 in the same quarter a year ago, according to its un-audited financial statements. "A rise in bulk tariffs for electricity, stable production levels and consistent foreign exchange rates, compared to the same period last year, contributed to higher profit," said the company in its earnings note.

বাংলাদেশে একসময় গবেষণা কিংবা সরকারি নীতিমালা আলোচনার ক্ষেত্রে কৃষি ও খাদ্য গুরুত্ব পেত। আশির দশকের পর থেকে কোনো ক্ষেত্রে এগুলো গুরুত্ব পাচ্ছে না। ভোক্তারা যৌক্তিক দামে পণ্য পাচ্ছেন না, আবার উৎপাদকও যৌক্তিক দাম পাচ্ছেন না। তাছাড়া নিরাপদ খাদ্যপণ্য কতটা আমদানি কিংবা তৈরি হচ্ছে, সেটাও বিবেচনা করা দরকার। কারণ ক্যান্সার হাসপাতালে রোগীর একটা বড় অংশই কৃষক। এর মানে খাদ্যপণ্য উৎপাদনে এমন অনেক উপাদান ব্যবহার হচ্ছে, যার সবচেয়ে বড় ভুক্তভোগী কৃষকরা। যারা আবার ঠিকমতো দামও পাচ্ছে না। মুক্তবাজার অর্থনীতির সাধারণ ধরন হচ্ছে অনেক প্রতিযোগী ও ক্রেতা-বিক্রেতা থাকবে এবং সব তথ্য সবার কাছে থাকবে। বাস্তবে মুক্তবাজার অর্থনীতি একটি কল্পকথা—এর কোনো অস্তিত্ব নেই। যেটার অস্তিত্ব আছে, সেটা অলিগোপলি। বেশির ভাগ বাজার ও পণ্য উৎপাদন কতিপয় গোষ্ঠীর নিয়ন্ত্রণে। ফলে মুক্তবাজারের মূল ধারণাগুলো এখানে কাজ করবে না। এখানে প্রতিযোগিতা কমিশন ও সরকারের ভূমিকা আছে।

The country's workforce notably lacks future job skills in digital and green technologies which would lower the productivity and competitiveness in the global market, stakeholders have said. Many skills are getting obsolete at a faster rate while some new skills are replacing them in the midst of emerging disruptive technologies in the fast-changing today's world, they added. According to a recent global report, employers today require a workforce with a skillset that did not exist 20 years ago. Artificial intelligence (AI), digital and green skills have all come to the fore.

Remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis in January of the current fiscal year dropped by more than 17 per cent to $2.19 billion compared to December 2024. However, year-on-year, the figure increased by 3.4 per cent, according to data released by the Bangladesh Bank on Sunday. Despite the monthly decline, remittance inflows during the first seven months of FY25 surged by more than 23 per cent compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The Bangladesh Bank's analysis highlighted that remittance inflows typically rise at the end of a fiscal year (June) and the end of a calendar year (December). Remittances see a significant boost during major religious festivals and special occasions.
