জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর) ২০২৪ সালের আগস্টে সাতক্ষীরার ভোমরা স্থলবন্দর দিয়ে গুঁড়ো দুধ ব্যতীত সব ধরনের পণ্য আমদানির অনুমতি দেয়। কিন্তু প্রায় পাঁচ মাস হতে চললেও এর সুফল পাচ্ছেন না ব্যবসায়ীরা। এতে সরকার যেমন বড় ধরনের রাজস্ব আয় থেকে বঞ্চিত হচ্ছে, তেমনি ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যের প্রসার ঘটছে না। তবে বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ বলছে, সক্ষমতা না থাকায় এখনই সব ধরনের পণ্য আমদানি সম্ভব নয়। কাস্টম হাউজ স্থাপনের পাশাপাশি বন্দরের অবকাঠামোগত উন্নয়ন করতে পারলে ব্যবসায়ীদের চাহিদামাফিক পণ্য প্রবেশ করানো সম্ভব হবে। ভোমরা সিঅ্যান্ডএফ এজেন্ট ব্যবসায়ী অ্যাসোসিয়েশন জানিয়েছে, সংগঠনের পক্ষ থেকে ভোমরা শুল্ক স্টেশনকে কাস্টম হাউজে রূপান্তর ও বন্দরের সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি করে সব ধরনের পণ্য আমদানির জন্য এনবিআরে আবেদন করা হয়েছে। তবে তাতে কোনো সাড়া মেলেনি।

New US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a call on Jan 24 with Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in which he urged Vietnam to address trade imbalances and also discussed shared concerns about China, reports Reuters. In the call, the first between the two top diplomats under the new administration of US President Donald Trump, the two hailed the 30th anniversary of US-Vietnam relations and progress made under a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership the countries agreed in 2023, a State Department statement said.

যশোরের বেনাপোল স্থলবন্দর দিয়ে ফল আমদানি হ্রাস পেয়েছে। আপেল, আঙ্গুর, কেনু, মালটা ও আনার-জাতীয় ফলের ওপর বাড়তি শুল্ককর আরোপ করায় এ পরিস্থিতি তৈরি হয়েছে বলে দাবি করছেন ব্যবসায়ীরা। গত ৯ জানুয়ারি জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর) ফল আমদানির সম্পূরক শুল্ক ২০ শতাংশ থেকে বাড়িয়ে ৩০ শতাংশ নির্ধারণ করে। এতে প্রতি কেজি ফলের শুল্ককর ১০১ টাকা থেকে বেড়ে ১১৬ টাকায় দাঁড়িয়েছে। শুল্ককর বৃদ্ধির মাধ্যমে বছরে প্রায় ১২ হাজার কোটি টাকার অতিরিক্ত রাজস্ব আয় হবে। তবে রমজানের ঠিক আগমুহূর্তে সরকারের এমন সিদ্ধান্তে নাখোশ ব্যবসায়ীরা। জানা যায়, ভারত থেকে বিভিন্ন ধরনের খাদ্যদ্রব্য নিয়ে প্রতিদিন প্রায় ১৫০ ট্রাক বেনাপোল স্থলবন্দরে প্রবেশ করে। এর মধ্যে অধিকাংশ ট্রাকেই থাকে আপেল, আঙ্গুর, কেনু, মালটা ও আনার-জাতীয় পণ্য। এনবিআর কর্তৃক সম্পূরক শুল্ক বৃদ্ধির প্রভাবে আমদানি ব্যয় বেড়ে গেছে। ফলে এ বন্দর দিয়ে ফল আমদানি কমে গেছে। অন্যদিকে খুচরা বাজারে ফলের দাম কেজিতে ৩০ থেকে ৪০ টাকা পর্যন্ত বেড়েছে।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রকে টপকে বৈশ্বিক সয়াবিন বাজারে ক্রমে নিজের হিস্যা বাড়াচ্ছে ব্রাজিল। বেশ কয়েক বছর ধরে এ দেশ থেকে চীন সবচেয়ে বেশি আমদানি করছে। তবে সম্প্রতি ব্রাজিলের পাঁচটি কোম্পানি থেকে সয়াবিন আমদানি স্থগিত করেছে দেশটি। শস্য যথাযথ মানসম্মত না হওয়ায় আমদানি স্থগিত করা হয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন খাতসংশ্লিষ্টরা। উল্লেখ্য, কোনো দেশ কৃষি বা পরিবেশের সুরক্ষা নিশ্চিত করতে কৃষিজাত পণ্য আমদানিতে ফসলের নির্দিষ্ট কিছু মান অথবা শর্তাবলি আরোপ করতে পারে। এ শর্ত পূরণ না হওয়ায় চীন আমদানি স্থগিত করেছে। বাজার বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন, চীনের এ স্থগিতকরণে বৈশ্বিক কৃষিপণ্য ‍সরবরাহ শৃঙ্খলে কিছুটা প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে। কারণ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নবনির্বাচিত প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্পের শুল্ক আরোপের হুমকি এরই মধ্যে আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে উত্তেজনা তৈরি করেছে। ব্রাজিলের কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয় জানিয়েছে, ব্রাজিলের পাঁচ কোম্পানি থেকে সয়াবিন আমদানির ‘‌নন-কনফর্মমিটি’ নোটিস তারা চীনের জেনারেল অ্যাডমিনিস্ট্রেশন অব কাস্টমস (শুল্ক বিভাগ) থেকে পেয়েছে। যদিও তারা কোম্পানিগুলোর নাম প্রকাশ করেনি।

টানা চতুর্থ সপ্তাহ ঊর্ধ্বমুখিতায় শেষ হতে যাচ্ছে স্বর্ণের আন্তর্জাতিক বাজার। সাপ্তাহিক লেনদেনের শেষদিনে মূল্যবান ধাতুটির দাম বেড়ে তিন মাসের সর্বোচ্চে পৌঁছেছে। খাতসংশ্লিষ্টরা বলছেন, দাম বাড়ার পেছনে ভূমিকা রেখেছে মার্কিন প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্পের শুল্ক আরোপের পরিকল্পনা। এছাড়া তিনি সুদহার কমানোর আহ্বান করায় ডলারের বিনিময় হার কমে এসেছে। এটিও মূল্যবৃদ্ধির অন্যতম কারণ। চলতি সপ্তাহে স্বর্ণের দাম ২ শতাংশের বেশি বেড়েছে। এর মধ্যে গতকাল স্পট মার্কেটে তা বেড়েছে দশমিক ৭ শতাংশ। প্রতি আউন্সের মূল্য পৌঁছেছে ২ হাজার ৭৭৪ ডলার ১৯ সেন্টে। এদিন শুরুতে মূল্যবান ধাতুটির দাম আউন্সপ্রতি ২ হাজার ৭৭৭ ডলার ১০ সেন্টে পৌঁছেছিল, যা ৩১ অক্টোবরের পর থেকে সর্বোচ্চ।

আগামী চার বছরে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে ৬০ হাজার কোটি ডলারের বিনিয়োগ ও বাণিজ্য বৃদ্ধির পরিকল্পনা করছে সৌদি আরব। তবে বিনিয়োগের ধরন সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত জানানো হয়নি। ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প দ্বিতীয় মেয়াদে হোয়াইট হাউজে প্রবেশের পর সৌদি যুবরাজ মোহাম্মদ বিন সালমানের সঙ্গে প্রথম ফোনালাপ শেষে এ ঘোষণা আসে। ২০১৭-২১ সালে নির্বাচিত হওয়ার পর প্রথম বিদেশ সফরে সৌদি আরবকে বেছে নেন ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প। সম্প্রতি জানিয়েছেন, যদি দেশটি ৫০ হাজার কোটি ডলারের মার্কিন পণ্য কিনতে সম্মত হয়, তবে আবারো সফরে তিনি ইচ্ছুক।

At the very start of the year, the middle and lower-middle classes received a "gift" from the government in the form of increased VAT (value-added tax). Before delving into the implications, it is crucial to define the "lower-middle class." These are individuals who perceive themselves as middle class and aspire to maintain a middle-class lifestyle but remain financially tethered to the lower-income group. For instance, they are able to dine out with their family twice a month but cannot order everything they desire in one sitting. If they order beef curry once, they have to save lamb leg roast for the next time. Similarly, if their child suddenly asks for another scoop of ice cream after the first, it might mean cutting back on protein at home for a meal. These are the people who constitute the lower-middle class. These are the people who struggle to balance indulgence and affordability.

সুদহার ১৭ বছরের মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ পর্যায়ে বাড়িয়েছে ব্যাংক অব জাপান (বিওজে)। মূলত গত বছর ভোক্তা মূল্যস্ফীতি দ্রুত বেড়ে যাওয়ায় এ সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে জাপানের আর্থিক নিয়ন্ত্রক সংস্থাটি। এবার স্বল্পমেয়াদি সুদহার দশমিক ৫ শতাংশে উন্নীত করেছে জাপান। সাম্প্রতিক অর্থনৈতিক পরিসংখ্যানে দেখা গেছে, গত মাসে দেশটিতে মূল্যস্ফীতির হার ছিল ১৬ মাসের মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ। এর আগে গত জুলাইয়ে বিওজে শেষবার সুদহার বাড়ায়। একই সময়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের দুর্বল কর্মসংস্থান প্রতিবেদনের কারণে বিশ্বজুড়ে বিনিয়োগকারীদের মধ্যে অপ্রত্যাশিত প্রতিক্রিয়া দেখা যায়, যা শেয়ারবাজারে ঝুঁকি তৈরি করেছিল। অবশ্য এবার বাজারে অভিঘাত এড়াতে আগেই সুদহার বাড়ানোর ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছিলেন ব্যাংকের গভর্নর কাজুও উয়েদা। সরকারি পরিসংখ্যান অনুসারে, জাপানে আগের বছরের একই সময়ের তুলনায় ডিসেম্বরে ভোক্তা মূল্য ছিল ৩ শতাংশ বেশি। জুলাইয়ের পর এবার প্রথম সুদহার বাড়াল জাপান। এমন সময় সিদ্ধান্তটি এল যখন ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প পুনরায় হোয়াইট হাউজে ফিরে এসেছেন। নির্বাচনী প্রচারণায় ট্রাম্প সব আমদানি পণ্যে শুল্ক আরোপ করার হুমকি দিয়েছিলেন, যা জাপানের মতো রফতানিমুখী দেশের ওপর প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে।

গণঅভ্যুত্থানে সরকার পরিবর্তনের পর গত পাঁচ মাসে গাজীপুরে ৫১টি শিল্প কারখানা বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে। এর মধ্যে ৪১টি কারখানা স্থায়ীভাবে এবং ১০টি কারখানা অস্থায়ীভাবে বন্ধ ঘোষণা করেছে মালিকপক্ষ। এ ছাড়া আগামী মে মাস থেকে কেয়া গ্রুপের আরও সাতটি কারখানা বন্ধের ঘোষণা দেওয়া হয়েছে।এসব কারণে অর্ধ লক্ষাধিক শ্রমিক বেকার হয়ে পড়েছেন। কর্মহীন শ্রমিকদের পরিবারের সদস্যরা নিদারুণ অনিশ্চয়তার মধ্যে দিন কাটাচ্ছেন। গাজীপুর শিল্প পুলিশ-২-এর পুলিশ সুপার এ কে এম জহিরুল ইসলাম জানান, জেলায় বিভিন্ন কারণে ৫১টি শিল্প কারখানা বন্ধ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে। তারমধ্যে ১০টি কারখানা অস্থায়ীভাবে বন্ধ রাখা হয়েছে, এসব কারখানার মালিক চাইলে যেকোনো সময় খুলে দিতে পারেন।

বাংলাদেশ সরকারের সঙ্গ বড় ধরনের একটি 'নন-বাইন্ডিং' চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর করেছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রতিষ্ঠান আর্জেন্ট এলএনজি। এ চুক্তির আওতায় বাংলাদেশকে বছরে ৫ মিলিয়ন টন তরলীকৃত গ্যাস (এলএনজি) সরবরাহ করবে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি।শুক্রবার এক বিবৃতিতে এ তথ্য জানায় আর্জেন্ট এলএনজি। সোমবার ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প প্রেসিডেন্ট হিসেবে দায়িত্বগ্রহণের পর এটিই এলএনজি সরবরাহে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রথম বড় ধরনের চুক্তি। এই চুক্তির মাধ্যমে নতুন মার্কিন প্রশাসনের জ্বালানিবান্ধব নীতিই প্রতিফলিত হলো বলে উল্লেখ করেছে সংশ্লিষ্ট পক্ষগুলো।

Bangladesh continues to spearhead mobile money adoption in South Asia, with a significant impact on financial inclusion and economic growth, according to a report of Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) published during the first half of 2024. The report titled "The State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money 2024" states the use of mobile money is increasing rapidly all over the world with approximately $2.7 million (nearly Tk33 crore) was transacted every minute globally via mobile phones in 2023.

Dr Zahid Hussain, a prominent figure and former lead economist at the World Bank's Dhaka Office, has expressed optimism that the general point-to-point inflation rate could be reduced to between 6 to 7 per cent in the next fiscal year (FY26) if the country does not face natural or political calamities. "My projection is that it will be possible to bring down inflation within 6 to 7 per cent if there is no major disruption. Prices of several commodities are still increasing. The prices of essential items like rice, lentils, and fish, which significantly impact the common people, need to be reduced," he stated.

A new avenue for Bangladesh in LNG supply is about to open up as World Bank Group's outfit MIGA has made financing proposal to facilitate the energy import from overseas market to feed its growing fuel demand, sources said Saturday. Following the proposal placed by the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), a member of the World Bank Group, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) of the government is scrutinizing the proposed financing package, Division officials said. The MIGA recently placed the proposal to the interim government the plan with guarantee for trade financing, especially for opening letters of credit (LCs) with local or foreign commercial banks.

Budgetary subsidy allocation may nearly double to Tk700 billion as the interim government wants to pay off accumulated arrears to the private-sector power producers within this fiscal year. Officials say the outlay in the current budget for fiscal year (FY) 2024-25 for payout to the independent power producers, contracted by the ousted government, is Tk 360 billion which may be ramped up for the payout. "We are working to revise the national budget. We have taken a policy to clear all the dues, including the capacity charge, to the private-sector power plants by enhancing the current amount of subsidies," says a senior Ministry of Finance (MoF) official.

The cost of a project to improve Munshiganj's road connectivity with Dhaka and its surrounding areas has been increased by 49.04 per cent in the first revision proposal. The project involves widening 10.813km of roads and constructing 9.06km of elevated roads from Panchabati in Narayanganj to the Muktarpur Bridge on the Dhaleshwari River. Initiated in January 2021, the project's estimated cost was Tk 22.43 billion. Now the Bridges Division has sent the first revision proposal, increasing the cost by Tk 11 billion to Tk 33.43 billion and extending the deadline by one more year. The cost has been raised due to the increase in land acquisition costs, pressure on the exchange rate, and additional costs for shifting utilities and some other work, said planning commission officials.

In May last year, the government committed to the World Bank (WB) to appointing independent directors to state-owned banks so that they would make up at least one-third of the total board members of such banks. The move was aimed at strengthening corporate governance at such banks. Nearly eight months have passed now, but there is only one independent director in the 13 state-owned banks. Of the banks, six are commercial banks, three are specialized banks, and four are non-scheduled banks. Rupali Bank is the lone state-owned bank having an independent director on its board, according to officials of the Financial Institutions Division (FID) under the Ministry of Finance.

The government decision to open all land ports for potato imports has significantly impacted the domestic market, causing the tuber's prices to plummet to a three-year low at farmers' end. Farmers across the country are struggling to recover their investments as the record price drop coincides with the peak harvesting season. Many are demanding the government impose restrictions on import for at least three months to provide relief. In Dhaka's retail markets, potato prices have declined to Tk 20-30 per kg, compared to Tk 40-50 just a week ago and Tk 60-80 a month ago.

The Bangladesh Agro-Processors Association (BAPA) Thursday urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to reconsider the decision to increase VAT on processed food.The government has already withdrawn the increased VAT and duties imposed on mobile services, internet, and restaurants. "Now, we expect a similar decision for processed food," Pran-RFL Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ahsan Khan Chowdhury said after a meeting between BAPA and NBR in the capital's Agargaon.BAPA leaders met NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan to urge him to withdraw the increased VAT and duties on processed food.

In a bid to mitigate the severe liquidity crisis and prevent bankruptcies stemming from non-performing loans (NPLs), Bangladesh's central bank has introduced a new provisioning model in compliance with international financial standards. The move aims to ensure banks are better equipped to handle loan defaults and maintain financial stability. The initiative comes as several banks, including those associated with prominent business groups, have struggled with significant NPLs, causing acute liquidity issues. In September last, the provisioning shortfall for 10 major banks exceeded Tk 500 billion, with two state-owned banks, Janata Bank and National Bank, accounting for 65% of this deficit.
