A gas-pipeline project is spurned by government planners for a lavish estimation of expenditures, including a fat consultancy cost, to be funded with local and foreign loans, insiders said Friday. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company PLC proposed to spend Tk 3.085 billion for consultancy service alone out of the Tk 81.61-billion pipeline-installation project, they said, only to be spurned by the Planning Commission (PC). The state-run energy company also earmarked a massive Tk 32.187 billion worth of funds for road-restoration works which the PC noted as a "bloated cost", officials concerned told The Financial Express. "The Commission has denied approval for the gas-pipeline project as Titas Gas has undertaken the scheme with some unnecessary expenditures taking huge amount of loans from internal and external sources," said officials involved with the approval process. The gas-supply company has also proposed some other costs that are higher than similar kind of ongoing projects, he added.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) is expecting to complete the negotiation with the Japanese consortium that will take the charge of operation and maintenance work of the newly-built third terminal of the country's prime international airport by June this year. CAAB Chairman Air Vice-Marshal Md Monjur Kabir Bhuiyan told this correspondent that they are currently in negotiation with the consortium and hope to complete the formalities by June this year. The consortium is seeking six to eight months to complete the formalities after finalising the agreement, while the CAAB is demanding that the consortium finish the tasks within five to six months, he said. A Japanese consortium comprising four companies is likely to get operation and maintenance work of the third terminal for 15 years as the preliminary bid discussion went on successfully. After the negotiation is completed, the consortium will need to recruit personnel, conduct training, and provide equipment and instruction to them. Finally they will have to check the equipment by running them.

The government is extending the tenure of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) under which the Abu Dhabi Ports Group wants to invest in the potential port sector of Bangladesh, while an impasse keeps other scrambling foreign investors at bay. An impasse over appointment of a foreign operator for New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) has been persisting for some time now amid contentions. The AD Ports Group had signed the non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) one year back and its tenure expired last week, officials said. Under the MoU, AD Ports Group had planned to invest $1.0 billion in construction of a multipurpose terminal under the Bay Terminal project near the Chittagong seaport, dubbed Bangladesh's commercial lifeline. Also, PSA Singapore and DP World of the United Arab Emirates have put on stake $1.5 billion each to develop two container terminals under the Bay Terminal project. The World Bank this past April signed a deal with the government to provide $650 million for construction of a 6-kilometre breakwater and access channels linking the Bay Terminal on the Bay of Bengal.

Banks are bagging a windfall from gaping spread between lending and deposit interest rates that banking experts dub a violation of relevant guidelines and international best practices. On an ascent in a pickup from a descent two years back, the interest-rate spread for banks recorded a significant rise in March 2025, indicating a potential rise in their profitability. The spread between the weighted average interest rate (WAIR) on advances and deposits for all banks increased by seven basis points to 5.87 per cent in March, compared to the previous month. This level was last seen in October 2024, according to Bangladesh Bank data. In contrast, nonbank financial institutions (NBFIs) saw a reversal of their fortunes as their spread shrank. The spread between the WAIR on advances and deposits for NBFIs fell by three basis points to 3.18 per cent in March. Both banks and nonbanks experienced a rise in their average deposit rates during the month, in a rebound. The WAIR on deposits rose to 6.17 per cent for banks and 10.61 per cent for NBFIs in March last.

An intelligence agency has sounded the alarm over possible post-season rice- market instability across the country as millers and their allied traders have started buying paddy in large volumes with the beginning of Boro harvesting. The Special Branch (SB) recently sent a report on rice/paddy procurement during the ongoing Boro season to the commerce ministry. Besides, the agriculture ministry also submitted some recommendations in this regard. The SB report suggested the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) take necessary measures to strictly monitor the illegal and fraudulent hoarding or syndication of agricultural products. "Post-season rice market is likely to be unstable as mill owners, corporate traders, and seasonal traders compete to purchase rice for storage as the season begins," it said. It recommended encouraging farmers to raise the target of paddy procurement and increase the government stock by purchasing paddy directly from farmers at the beginning of the season. Moreover, it suggested strengthening food security, determining the procurement price by evaluating the production cost of rice and rice procurement in government warehouses, and ensuring reasonable profit for farmers. Biman Bangladesh Airlines has announced additional flights on domestic routes ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to accommodate the expected surge in holiday travel. In a press release issued on Friday, the flag carrier said it will operate extra flights from Dhaka to Rajshahi and Syedpur in the north, and to Cox’s Bazar in the south, alongside its regular schedule. Biman spokesperson ABM Rowshan Kabir said that four additional flights will be operated on the Dhaka-Syedpur route and three on the Dhaka-Rajshahi route. As for Cox’s Bazar, the number of extra flights is yet to be finalised, as many people also travel there for leisure during the Eid holidays. A decision is expected over the weekend.
