The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has decided to revoke the source tax exemption on dividend transfers for two Singapore-based subsidiaries of Summit Group – Summit Power International and Summit Corporation. The decision was made during a regulatory authority meeting last week, with NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan expressing his concurrence. The revenue board is expected to issue an official notice on the revocation soon, its officials told TBS.

ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নকে (ইইউ) ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে ন্যূনতম ৪২ দশমিক ৫ শতাংশ নবায়নযোগ্য বিদ্যুৎ ব্যবহার করার লক্ষ্য অর্জন করতে হবে। এর অর্থ অঞ্চলজুড়ে বিদ্যুতায়ন বাড়াতে পারে। লক্ষ্যমাত্রার মেয়াদ যত কাছাকাছি আসছে, বিদ্যুতের চাহিদাও তত বাড়ছে। তবে ইউরোপের বিদ্যুৎ অবকাঠামো পরিবেশবান্ধব জ্বালানি রূপান্তরের জন্য প্রস্তুত কিনা সে বিষয়ে প্রশ্ন তুলছেন সংশ্লিষ্টরা। ইউরোপীয় বহুজাতিক বিদ্যুৎ ও গ্যাস কোম্পানি ইওএন বলছে, বিদ্যুৎ অবকাঠামো নিয়ে সক্ষমতা ও সমন্বিতকরণের সমস্যায় ভুগছে ইউরোপ। কোম্পানির সিইও লিওনহার্ড বার্নবাউম উদাহরণ দিয়ে বলেন, ‘আপনার এলাকার সড়কগুলো কল্পনা করুন, যেগুলো দৈনিক গাড়ির চাপ সামলানোর উপযোগী। এবার সে সড়কে আরো দুই কোটি গাড়ি নামিয়ে দিন। চিন্তা করতে পারেন যানজট, দুর্ঘটনা ও বিলম্ব কতটা সমস্যা তৈরি হবে? ইউরোপের বিদ্যুৎ অবকাঠামো নিয়ে আমরা ঠিক এ সমস্যার মুখোমুখি হচ্ছি।’

দেশের সবচেয়ে বড় বিদ্যুৎ প্রকল্প রূপপুর পারমাণবিক বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র চালু হতে পারে আগামী বছরের মার্চে। এরই মধ্যে বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রটির প্রথম ইউনিট (১ হাজার ২০০ মেগাওয়াট সক্ষমতার) নিয়ে পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা শুরু করেছে নির্মাণকারী প্রতিষ্ঠান রোসাটম। বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রের নকশাসহ বিভিন্ন মানদণ্ড পূরণ সাপেক্ষে এসব পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা শেষ হওয়ামাত্রই কেন্দ্রটি উৎপাদনে নেয়া হবে। সংশ্লিষ্টরা বলছেন, দেশে বিদ্যুতের চাহিদা না বাড়লে বড় এ বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র উৎপাদনে যাওয়ার পর বৃহৎ সক্ষমতার অন্যান্য বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রকে বসিয়ে রাখতে হতে পারে। এমনকি দেশের কয়লাভিত্তিক বড় প্রকল্পগুলোয়ও উৎপাদন বন্ধ রাখার প্রয়োজনীয়তা দেখা দিতে পারে বলে আশঙ্কা রয়েছে।

মার্কিন কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক ফেডারেল রিজার্ভ (ফেড) গত বুধবার সুদহার পূর্বাভাসের সঙ্গে সংগতি রেখে ২৫ বেসিস পয়েন্ট কমিয়েছে। দুই দিনব্যাপী বৈঠক শেষে এ সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় ফেডের নীতিনির্ধারণী ফোরাম ফেডারেল ওপেন মার্কেট কমিটি (এফওএমসি)। তবে মূল্যস্ফীতির কারণে আগামী বছর সুদহার কমানোর বিষয়ে ফেড কিছুটা অনমনীয় হতে পারে বলে জানা গেছে। সুদহার কমানোর পর এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে ফেড চেয়ার জেরোম পাওয়েল বলেন, ‘উচ্চ মুদ্রাস্ফীতি পরিস্থিতির উন্নতির ওপর সুদহার আরো কমানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নির্ভর করছে। আমি মনে করি, আমরা এখন ভালো অবস্থায় এবং একটি নতুন পর্যায়ে আছি। সামনের দিনগুলোয় আমরা সুদহার কর্তনের বিষয়ে আরো সতর্ক থাকব।’ বিশ্লেষকদের মতে, পাওয়েলের এ বক্তব্যের মাধ্যমে স্পষ্ট, নীতিনির্ধারকরা ট্রাম্প প্রশাসন কর্তৃক সম্ভাব্য অর্থনৈতিক পরিবর্তনের বিষয়ে ভাবতে শুরু করেছেন।

বিশ্বব্যাপী কয়লার ব্যবহার চলতি বছর রেকর্ড সর্বোচ্চে পৌঁছতে পারে। ২০২৭ সাল পর্যন্ত তা সর্বোচ্চ পর্যায়ের কাছাকাছি থাকতে পারে। বুধবার এক প্রতিবেদনে এমন পূর্বাভাস দিয়েছে ইন্টারন্যাশনাল এনার্জি এজেন্সি (আইইএ)। সংস্থাটি জানায়, এশিয়ার দেশগুলোয় কয়লার ঊর্ধ্বমুখী চাহিদা এ সময় ব্যবহার বৃদ্ধিতে ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে। যদিও যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও ইউরোপে জ্বালানি পণ্যটির ব্যবহার কমছে। বিশ্বব্যাপী বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনে কয়লার ব্যবহার বর্তমানে মাত্র ৩৫ শতাংশ। এছাড়া নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানির ব্যবহারও দিন দিন বাড়ছে। এর পরও পণ্যটির চাহিদা বৃদ্ধির পূর্বাভাস দিয়েছে আইইএ। সংস্থাটির প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, ২০২৪ সালে বিশ্বব্যাপী কয়লার চাহিদা ৮৭৭ কোটি টনে পৌঁছতে পারে। এক্ষেত্রে চীনের চাহিদা বিশ্বের বাকি অংশের তুলনায় প্রায় তিন গুণ বেশি থাকবে।

মালয়েশিয়া জানুয়ারিতে সরবরাহের জন্য অপরিশোধিত পাম অয়েলের ওপর ১০ শতাংশ রফতানি কর বহাল রেখেছে। মঙ্গলবার প্রকাশিত এক সার্কুলারে নিজস্ব ওয়েবসাইটে এ তথ্য জানিয়েছে মালয়েশিয়ান পাম অয়েল বোর্ড (এমপিওবি)। মালয়েশিয়ার রফতানি শুল্ক কাঠামো অনুযায়ী, প্রতি টন পাম অয়েলের মূল্য ২ হাজার ২৫০ থেকে ২ হাজার ৪০০ রিঙ্গিতের মধ্যে হলে শুল্ক হার শুরু হয় ৩ শতাংশ থেকে। তবে পণ্যটির মূল্য ৪ হাজার ৫০ রিঙ্গিত অতিক্রম করলে সর্বোচ্চ ১০ শতাংশ শুল্ক প্রযোজ্য হয়। এদিকে পাম অয়েলের রেফারেন্স মূল্য বেড়েছে মালয়েশিয়ায়। সার্কুলারে এমপিওবি জানায়, জানুয়ারিতে সরবরাহের জন্য পণ্যটির রেফারেন্স মূল্য টনপ্রতি ৫ হাজার ১ দশমিক ৭২ রিঙ্গিত (১ হাজার ১২০ ডলার ৯৬ সেন্ট) নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে, ডিসেম্বরে যা ছিল টনে ৪ হাজার ৪৭১ দশমিক ৩৯ রিঙ্গিত।

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on Thursday approved three operations totaling $1.16 billion to help Bangladesh improve health services, boost water and sanitation services and achieve greener and climate-resilient development. “Bangladesh is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change and faces the greatest pollution challenges. Improving climate resilience in every sector and tackling the pollution scourge has become a critical development priority,” said Abdoulaye Seck, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said Thursday that the economic situation in Bangladesh is not gloomy, but it is in a challenging position. At the same time, he acknowledged that the gross domestic product (GDP) growth may slow down to 3.8 per cent at the end of this fiscal year as projected by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Additionally, he admitted that the point-to-point inflation rate could reach 11 per cent by fiscal year-end. "We don't want to manipulate statistics like in the past," Mr Ahmed told newsmen at his secretariat office. The finance adviser expressed the hope that the central bank will bring down the inflation rate to 8.0 per cent by December.

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has finally reached the net international reserve (NIR) target, a condition set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of its $4.7 billion loan package for stabilising the country's macroeconomic situation. The central bank achieved the target nearly two weeks ahead of the deadline, thanks to the growing inflow of US dollars, officials said. Under the IMF condition, the Bretton Woods Institution asked the central bank to maintain the minimum NIR equivalent to $15.3 billion by this month. The banking regulator exceeded the figure on Thursday.

The average yield of rice in the ongoing Aman season has increased this year, ushering hopes to compensate the damage Bangladesh incurred in 14 districts due to July-August flooding. As above 56 per cent of Aman harvest has been completed so far, according to official statistics, farmers are getting 3.11 tonnes of rice on average per hectare of land. The country produced an all-time high of 16.7-million tonnes of rice in the last Aman season when average yield was 2.90 tonnes per hectare. This fiscal year, the expectation was higher at 17.6-million tonnes on 5.9-million hectares, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).

The currency is flowing back into banks, driven by rising deposit rates and growing confidence in the well-performing institutions, after a surge in cash outflow from the banking system for about a five-month period. Bangladesh Bank data showed that currency outside the banking system fell by Tk 57.43 billion to Tk 2.778 trillion in October 2024 from the previous month (September). Bankers attributed the trend to a slight improvement in depositors' confidence, following months of instability. Deposits in the banks rose to Tk 17.6 trillion in October, marking an increase of nearly 1.0 per cent from September.

High inflation hitting people's living remains a serious concern to the International Monetary Fund as the financier offers another loan tranche of $645 million to Bangladesh that is expected to be available in February. An IMF mission concludes that low economic growth and high inflation, in particular, add up to the pressures on the country's macroeconomic parameters like balance of payments and foreign-exchange reserves. The fourth tranche of the IMF's ongoing credit package, however, is bound with two strings for Bangladesh to meet prior to its board's approval.
