A multimodal logistics hub integrating railway, road, and Chittagong seaport facilities will be developed near the Bay Terminal to boost Bangladesh's trade-facilitating efficiency, as efforts are geared towards US$100-billion annual export earnings. To this end, the World Bank-financed Bay Terminal Breakwater Project is moving ahead, with a subsidiary loan agreement to be signed today, following an earlier deal made between ERD and the Bank in Washington, said Senior Secretary, Shipping, Mohammed Yousuf at a roundtable organised by The Financial Express on Sunday in Dhaka. The Financial Express organised the event with the support of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Conveyor Group, Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association (BSAA), Anchorage Container Depot Limited and Bangladesh Container Shipping Association (BCSA).

Over the years of teaching in Bangladeshi universities, one alarming pattern kept repeating. A significant number of students pursuing their bachelor's degree or who are just weeks away from graduating do not have the basic skills required for the corporate world, namely, preparing a budget or understanding what an income statement is. As we are going to celebrate the first anniversary of the youth-led July revolution, which sowed the seeds of reformations, it's time we addressed three critical areas: breaking free from export over-dependence, investing seriously in human capital, and maintaining the policy stability that economic transformation demands. It would not be overstating things to say that Bangladesh's economy has ridden on the wave of prosperity of ready-made garments (RMG) for years, with the sector accounting for 82-85 per cent of our total exports.

Myanmar's military junta has dissolved its State Administration Council (SAC) and replaced it with a new interim caretaker setup, the so-called 'State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC)'. On July 31,2025, the February, 2021's coup leader, Senior General Ming Aung Hlaing lifted the state of emergency he had extended seven times to continue his regime's grip on Myanmar since he had toppled the country's elected government four and a half years ago. The aim of this move is to hold what junta leader calls an election 'on the path to a multiparty democracy' in December 2025 and January 2026.Interestingly, the junta on August 1, declared a new state of emergency and martial law on 63 townships across Myanmar including areas where ethnic armed groups and the National Unity Government (NUG) comprising lawmakers and members of parliament of the elected government deposed earlier by coup are now in control. Clearly, this is an attempt by the Naypyidaw junta to present itself before the world in a new-look package. The election it plans to hold is nothing but a gimmick to hoodwink the world into believing that the new government to be formed after the so-called election will be a democratic one. Now the fact remains that the military junta in Naypyidaw is losing control on substantial parts of the country, especially in the border regions, to the rebels including, for example, the Arakan Army (AA), Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) etc. So, its authority over the country is increasingly coming into question. The rebel ethnic group armies already control large parts of the Rakhine, Shan, Kachin, Karen and Chin states. Also, a large chunk of Mandalay and Sagaingregions have gone under rebel occupation.

The Dhaka North City Corporation's (DNCC’s) recent call for a moratorium on the sale and conversion of lands in areas earmarked under the Detailed Area Plan (DAP) is most pragmatic. Alongside this, the DNCC has urged restrictions on tax collection in these areas to help preserve the waterbodies, open fields and parks as envisioned in the DAP, which is vital for improving the capital's environment, biodiversity and quality of life. Reportedly, the DNCC has also initiated plans to create water-centric parks in areas such as Badda, Aftabnagar and Mirpur. If implemented, these waterparks would not only serve as areas for water retention but also add scenic beauty and relief to the otherwise lifeless concrete jungle of Dhaka. The DAP, an ambitious urban development blueprint for 2022-2035, designates specific areas as wetlands, including waterbodies, flood flow zones and water retention areas. These ecological spaces are indispensable for flood management, groundwater recharge and maintaining biodiversity. Yet, over the years, most of Dhaka's wetlands have indiscriminately been filled up, exposing the city to irreversible environmental degradation. Once teemed with fish and migratory birds, these wetlands have been reduced to barren land and aggressively occupied by real estate developments or industries. This reckless encroachment has been driven by runaway population growth, poor governance and an unrestrained culture of land grabbing.

The government has finalised its plan to expand the four-lane Dhaka-Chattogram highway into 10 lanes and is considering managing funds from both private investors and multilateral agencies due to the high cost estimated at Tk 620 billion. Officials said though the cost is lower than the earlier estimate of Tk 732 billion made by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) by totalling the demands of its zonal offices, it is still high due to accommodating many new features into the busiest corridor of the country. Sources, however, said RHD owns 90 per cent of the land to the right of the 250km highway. Yet, the project cost could not be reduced much. Compared to the previous upgradation to four lanes in 2016, the latest one will see the cost rise over 16 times. The RHD recently completed the project's feasibility study and detailed design with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), proposing a six-and-a-half-lane access control highway and two-lane service roads on both sides to ensure seamless movement of vehicles.

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has asked finance companies (formerly non-bank financial institutions or NBFIs) to submit their actual liquidity positions after detecting inconsistencies in earlier statements. The banks must provide the updated data using the new template issued with the circular. The circular reads: "It is observed that there are some inconsistencies in the liquidity statements submitted by finance companies which do not reflect actual liquidity position of the concerned institutions." "All finance companies are hereby directed to submit the Statement of Structural Liquidity Profile within the timeframe mentioned in DFIM Circular No 9 dated October 20, 2015, based on the amended input template uploaded in the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) of Bangladesh Bank," it added.

Despite a rebound in economic activities and largely restored macroeconomic stability, Bangladesh faces mounting pressures of persistent inflation and fiscal slippages, revealed the latest publication of the General Economics Division (GED). The August issue of the "Monthly Economic Update and Outlook," released by the GED of the Planning Commission on Sunday, also warned that the persistent challenges, such as youth unemployment, regional disparities, elevated multi-dimensional poverty, and climate vulnerability, would pose risks to long-term stability. The GED report urged expediting reform initiatives to rebuild trust and confidence, noting that the success of many reforms depend on political will and institutional capacity of the next elected government, although the interim administration has provided a blueprint for the future governments. The publication identified inflationary pressure as a major concern, and revealed that consumer prices stayed well above the government's target, driven mainly by food inflation amid supply-side disruptions and higher import costs.

The yields on treasury bills (T-bills) fell further on Sunday as banks preferred to invest their excess liquidity in the risk-free securities. The cut-off yield, generally known as interest rate, on the 91-Day T-bills came down to 10.14 per cent on the day from 10.20 per cent of the previous level while the yield on 182-day T-bills fell to 10.35 per cent on the day from 10.39 per cent earlier. However, the yield on 364-Day T-bills came down to 10.43 per cent on the day from 10.50 per cent earlier, according to the auction results. The government borrowed Tk 55 billion on the day by issuing the three types of T-bills to meet its budget deficit partly. "A section of banks is now showing interest in investing their excess funds in short-term securities, driven by a recent increase in liquidity inflows into the market," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told The Financial Express (FE) while explaining the latest market situation. Market interventions by the central bank, through purchasing American dollars from banks, have helped increase liquidity inflows into the market, the central banker explained.

Revenue intelligence has tracked down nearly Tk 400 billion worth of assets amassed in different countries around the world through money laundering from Bangladesh. National Board of Revenue Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) Director-General Ahsan Habib apprised Chief Adviser of the interim government Prof Muhammad Yunus that investigations had been conducted in seven cities across five countries since January this year, leading to this discovery, said a spokesperson for the CA Office on Sunday. Chairman of the NBR Md. Abdur Rahman Khan was present when the CIC Director-General presented the findings to the head of post-uprising government at the State Guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka on Sunday. Additionally, 352 passports have been identified in nine countries that were obtained by some Bangladeshis in exchange for money. The countries include Antigua and Barbuda, Austria, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, North Macedonia, Malta, Saint Lucia, and Turkey. Ahsan Habib explained that CIC investigators, after preliminary preparation using information from various domestic sources, conducted on-the-ground inspections in these countries to gather detailed intelligence.

দিনাজপুরের হিলিতে এক সপ্তাহের ব্যবধানে আলুর দাম বেড়েছে কেজিপ্রতি ৬-৮ টাকা। সরবরাহ কমে যাওয়ায় পণ্যটির বাজারদর বেড়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন ব্যবসায়ীরা। গতকাল হিলি বাজার ঘুরে দেখা গেছে, বাজারের প্রতিটি দোকানেই আলুর পর্যাপ্ত সরবরাহ আছে। এক সপ্তাহ আগে কাটিনাল জাতের আলু ১০ টাকা কেজি দরে বিক্রি হলেও বর্তমানে তা বেড়ে ১৬ টাকায় বিক্রি হচ্ছে। এছাড়া গুটি জাতের আলু বিক্রি হচ্ছে ২০ টাকা কেজি দরে, এক সপ্তাহ আগে যা ছিল ১২ টাকা।

Companies that have managed to avoid any form of audit on their tax files for years in collusion with corrupt tax officials are now set to come under audit in the future. Under the new "Income Tax Return Audit Instructions," issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday, one-third of all returns selected for audit by any tax office must now come from taxpayers whose files have never before been audited. An NBR official, who requested anonymity, told TBS, "In the past, some corrupt officials would conspire to keep certain assessees out of the audit purview for years, making it impossible to detect tax fraud. This new rule will significantly reduce the opportunities for such irregularities." The new directive also states that even those who file zero-income or low-profit returns will be subject to an audit. Additionally, the previous unofficial rule of not auditing new taxpayers in their first year will no longer be in effect, with "high-risk" new tax files now also being selected for an audit. Abdur Rahman Khan, chairman of the NBR, said the new process for selecting audit files has been made transparent. He added that individual taxpayers' files will no longer be selected manually, but will instead be chosen by a software based on specific criteria.

The government is taking steps to help Nassa Group, one of Bangladesh's largest garment manufacturers, keep its factories operational and ensure thousands of workers continue receiving their salaries, following a similar intervention for Beximco Group. Although several companies within the group are classified as defaulters, authorities will facilitate the opening of back-to-back letters of credit (LCs) and provide policy-level assistance to sustain production. Following an initiative of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Bangladesh Bank has taken this step at the request of the Financial Institutions Division, according to labour ministry sources. Sources said that for back-to-back LCs opened at 100% margin, creditor banks will not be allowed to claim repayment for loans from proceeds. Funds will first be used to pay worker wages and cover other regular expenses, with any surplus applied to loan repayment.

রফতানি খাতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে শুল্ক বিবাদ ও শ্লথ প্রবৃদ্ধির মাঝে দেশীয় বাজার চাঙ্গা করতে বিভিন্ন ধরনের প্রণোদনা দিচ্ছে চীন। এ অবস্থায় দেশটির বাজেটে আর্থিক ঘাটতি ক্রমেই বড় হচ্ছে। সে ঘাটতি পূরণে নেয়া হয়েছে একাধিক পদক্ষেপ। এর অংশ হিসেবে বিদেশী পুঁজিবাজারে চীনে বসবাসকারীদের অর্জিত মুনাফার ওপর কর পরিশোধের আহ্বান আরো জোরালো হয়েছে। এর অন্যথা হলে কঠোর আর্থিক ব্যবস্থা নিচ্ছে বেইজিং। ফলে চীনের মূল ভূখণ্ডের সম্পদশালী বিনিয়োগকারীরা বিদেশে লেনদেনের কৌশল নিয়ে নতুন করে ভাবছেন।
