Deep deflation in China offers Bangladesh prospect of economic reflation with cheaper imports, particularly of capital goods. Bangladesh being heavily dependent on imports from the world's second-largest economy, lower import costs are believed to provide it some relief on the overall economic front. In May 2024 alone, Bangladesh sourced over 28 per cent of its imports from China, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. With a 7 per cent system loss, the new management of the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company PLC has been facing the biggest challenge in its service delivery. “Some 7 per cent system loss means the organization loses Tk 150-180 crore per month in revenue,” said Shahnewaz Parvez, the new managing director of the Titas Gas PLC. “It means, the state-owned gas distribution entity can save Tk 1800-2160 crore a year if such a huge system loss is checked,” he told UNB. Among the six gas distribution companies, Titas Gas has been the oldest and largest one both in terms of its operational area and volume of natural gas sales. As per the official statistics, the Titas Gas, invented in 1964, alone holds 55 per cent of the gas market share while the other five companies have 45 per cent.

Bangladesh Bank has introduced special concessions for the export of e-commerce products, aimed at supporting small exporters. Under the new regulations, exports of products valued up to USD 500 through e-commerce no longer require the mandatory EXP form, a step designed to simplify the export process. The Foreign Exchange and Policy Department of the central bank issued the circular on Monday, detailing the updated rules. Previously, the EXP form was compulsory for any private export from Bangladesh, with the Authorized Dealer (AD) banks responsible for declaring the export on behalf of the customer, UNB reports. The change addresses long-standing complaints from exporters about the burdensome documentation requirements, with up to 14 different documents needed for the export process. This new directive applies specifically to business-to-consumer (B2C) exports via e-commerce.

According to operators, importing LPG from Iran costs $40 to $50 less per tonne than other markets, giving importers a margin of over Tk40 per 12-kg cylinder. However, consumers aren't reaping the benefits, as these importers offer higher commissions to dealers instead of lowering prices for buyers. LPG, a mix of propane and butane, is typically imported at a contract price set by major producers like Saudi Aramco, which serves as a global benchmark. In addition to this, a premium is charged, covering various extra costs. While the benchmark price remains the same across markets, premiums can vary. In August, for example, Premier LP Gas imported butane at a contract price of $690 per tonne, with a $120 premium, whereas two other companies paid a much lower premium of $74 and $84 respectively.

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has said that commission agents, known as aratdars, are manipulating vegetable prices, contributing to the overall price spiral in the market. The DNCRP has pointed out that wholesalers, dealers and retailers, in collusion with these agents, are driving up the prices of essential commodities, including vegetables. This observation came following the directorate's ongoing market monitoring efforts, said a DNCRP release on Sunday. Recently, the government has formed a special taskforce to stabilize the prices of essential commodities and ensure a steady supply.

The prices of green chilli and eggs shot up further on Monday, reaching previous records. The green chilli market has become volatile as retail prices reach Tk 600-700 a kg depending on city areas.
