আন্তর্জাতিক এয়ার ট্রান্সপোর্ট অ্যাসোসিয়েশন (আইএটিএ) জানিয়েছে, অক্টোবর পর্যন্ত এয়ারলাইনস খাতে আয়ের ১৭০ কোটি ডলার আটকে রেখেছিল বিভিন্ন দেশ। অর্থের এ পরিমাণ এপ্রিলের ১৮০ কোটি ডলার থেকে সামান্য কম। এ সময় পাকিস্তান, বাংলাদেশ, আলজেরিয়া ও ইথিওপিয়ায় পরিস্থিতির উল্লেখযোগ্য অগ্রগতি হলেও নতুন সমস্যা দেখা দিয়েছে মোজাম্বিক, বলিভিয়া ও পশ্চিম আফ্রিকায়। নয়টি দেশে আটকে আছে এ অর্থের ৮৩ শতাংশ বা ১৪৩ কোটি ডলার। আইএটিএর মহাপরিচালক উইলি ওয়ালশের মতে, এ পরিস্থিতি এয়ারলাইনস খাতের প্রবৃদ্ধির জন্য হুমকি। সরকারগুলো আন্তর্জাতিক চুক্তি মেনে অবরুদ্ধ তহবিল মুক্ত করবে বলে আশা তার।

The government on Wednesday approved separate proposals for procuring over 14.8 million litres of edible oil and 10,000 metric tons (MTs) of lentils to meet the growing demand of the country. The approval came during the 16th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase (ACCGP) this year, held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat, with Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, Adviser to the interim government on the Ministry of Finance, in the chair, BSS reports. Briefing reporters after the meeting, he said that, following a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce, the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) would procure 10,000 MTs of lentils from Nabil Naba Foods Limited under the local Open Tender Method (OTM) at a cost of around Tk 0.96 billion, where the price per kilogram (Kg) of lentils would be Tk 95.97.

The first LNG shipment of the new year has been procured at an open market price of $15.02 per unit.The proposal for the purchase was approved by the advisory committee on government procurement on Wednesday.The agenda of the meeting shows that Singaporean company Vitol Asia will supply one cargo or 3.36 million MBtu of LNG at the price between Jan 4-5.At $15.02 per unit, the total cost will be around Tk 7.09 billion. Approval has also been provided to purchase 600,000 tonnes of Murban grade crude oil from Abu Dhabi’s state-owned company Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, or ADNOC, for 2025 at a cost of Tk 52.08 billion.

Bangladesh is among the top eight countries with the highest population outflows, driven by the pursuit of better opportunities abroad and concerns over security at home, according to a Mastercard report. "Bangladesh is one of the markets with the largest outflows of population, alongside India, Mexico, Russia, Syria, the Chinese Mainland, Pakistan and Ukraine, driven by various factors, including the search for better opportunities and security concerns," said Mastercard in the report.However, the outflow of population from Bangladesh helps the country's economy with the inflow of remittances, accounting for 5% of its GDP.

The Global Hunger Index 2024 reveals that 11.9% of Bangladesh's population is undernourished, highlighting ongoing challenges in combating food insecurity and malnutrition. The report, launched today at Sheraton Dhaka, also notes that 23.6% of children under five are stunted, and 11.0% are wasted, stressing the need for accelerated efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger. The event, themed "Towards Zero Hunger: Challenges and Way Forward," was jointly organized by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.

In an uptick in embracing sustainability, three more Bangladeshi listed firms have joined the Bloomberg Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) club, bringing the total to ten, including six homegrown companies. The updated Bloomberg data reveals that steel giant BSRM Limited, multinational cement manufacturer Lafarge Holcim Bangladesh, and lubricant and liquefied petroleum gas market leader MJL Bangladesh are the new entries based on their 2023 sustainability disclosures.

While commodity markets brim with winter vegetables, many consumers in Dhaka say prices remain higher than expected despite increased supply and lower transport costs due to presumably fewer scopes for extortion. Standing at Kallyanpur's new kitchen market, Mohammad Sifat, a recent university graduate seeking employment, expressed his disappointment to this correspondent. He said "The market is full of winter vegetables, but the prices haven't dropped accordingly. New potatoes still cost Tk90 per kg, and beans are Tk60 per kg. With reduced import duties and less transport extortion [bribes and tolls], we expect prices to drop further."

A fresh US$3.0-billion IMF loan is bound with strings of reforms that necessitate Bangladesh to hike power tariffs in the process of building a non-subsidy economy, officials said. A visiting team of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a meeting with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) suggested that Bangladesh raise the electricity tariffs and cut subsidies for becoming a self-reliant country, the officials said Tuesday. The third review mission of the IMF started discussions with the interim government of Bangladesh regarding the assured fresh $3.0-billion loan in addition to its already-granted $4.7 billion in a credit package. The IMF mission, whose primary task is to assess the country's progress in meeting its criteria for releasing the 4th tranche of the confirmed $4.7-billion loan, will continue the consultations until December 17.

Many beneficiaries of tax largesse offered by the past regime for indefinite period are among those losing out under a current trimming that limits waivers to maximum five years. Officials say the government's revenue authority has started implementing Sunset Clause-like measure setting maximum five-year tenure of tax exemptions. Already, six tax-exemption statutory regulatory orders (SROs) have been scrapped by the income-tax wing of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).Sunset Clause is a mechanism on global practices in the public-policymaking domain with various historical precedents that define the end-date of a law or tax benefit.

দেশে নদ-নদীর খসড়া তালিকা করা হয়েছে। সরকারের পানিসম্পদ মন্ত্রণালয় এ খসড়া তালিকা প্রকাশ করেছে। গতকাল রাজধানীর গ্রিন রোডে পানি ভবনে ‘বাংলাদেশের নদ-নদীর সংখ্যা নির্ধারণ’ বিষয়ক অবহিতকরণ সেমিনারে এ তালিকা প্রকাশ করা হয়। মন্ত্রণালয়ের তথ্যমতে, খসড়া হিসেবে নদ-নদীর সংখ্যা ১ হাজার ১৫৬। বিভাগীয় কমিশনারের কার্যালয় থেকে পাওয়া সংখ্যা যাচাইয়ের পর এ তালিকা প্রকাশ করা হয়েছে। আরো যাচাই-বাছাইয়ের পর নদ-নদীর চূড়ান্ত তালিকা প্রকাশ করা হবে। এ সময় পানিসম্পদ এবং পরিবেশ, বন ও জলবায়ু মন্ত্রণালয়ের উপদেষ্টা সৈয়দা রিজওয়ানা হাসান বলেন, ‘সমন্বিতভাবে উদ্যোগটা নিয়েছি। আগে এক মন্ত্রণালয়ের সঙ্গে অন্য মন্ত্রণালয়ের যোগসূত্র থাকত না। এবার দুইটা মন্ত্রণালয়ের সমন্বয়ে এ খসড়া তৈরি করা হয়েছে। আগামী পয়লা বৈশাখ আমরা সম্পূর্ণ তালিকা প্রকাশ করব। যদি ভূমি মন্ত্রণালয়কে যুক্ত করতে হয় আমরা তা করব এবং নদীর তালিকাটা সঠিকভাবে করার চেষ্টা করব।’

China maintained its position as Bangladesh's largest trading partner in FY24, with bilateral trade amounting to Tk 2.246 trillion, according to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).India remained the second-largest trading partner, recording Tk 1.463 trillion in two-way trade during the same period, the data revealed. China surpassed India in imports as early as 2010 and emerged as Bangladesh's largest trading partner in 2018, according to the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). This growing relationship has been further strengthened by China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).Besides, China's share in Bangladesh's total export-import trade increased to 15.17 per cent in June FY24, a rise of 0.26 percentage points from the previous fiscal year's same month, the BBS data released on Tuesday shows.

Despite having immense potential, bond market in the country still remains unexplored because of multiple factors, including weak corporate governance, lack of awareness and data transparency, poor investment-friendly tax structures and inadequate enforcement of regulations, experts at a roundtable said on Tuesday. In the absence of sustainable long-term funding sources like bond market, the financing pressure on the country's banking system continues to grow, enhancing the risk of non-performing assets, they said.

ক্রমবর্ধমান মূল্যস্ফীতির মধ্যে সিটি ব্যাংক তার কর্মীদের জীবনযাত্রা সহজ করতে বেতন পুনর্গঠনের ঘোষণা দিয়েছে। ব্যাংকের পরিচালনা পর্ষদ ২০২৪ সালের জন্য ১৬২ কোটি টাকার বার্ষিক ইনক্রিমেন্ট (বেতন বৃদ্ধি) অনুমোদন করেছে; পিএমপি সমন্বয় এবং বোনাসসহ ২০২৫ সালের শেষ নাগাদ যা দাঁড়াবে মোট ৩০০ কোটি টাকায়। ব্যাংকের হিসাব অনুযায়ী, এ পদক্ষেপের ফলে আগামী বছরের মধ্যে মোট বেতন ব্যয় বাবদ খরচ হবে বার্ষিক ১ হাজার ২১০ কোটি টাকা।

Bangladesh's ranking in the global hunger index (GHI) improved slightly with a score of 19.4 this year, narrowly escaping the category of serious-hunger group. The country ranks 84 out of127 countries, graduating to the category of moderate hunger from serious hunger groups in 2016, according to the 2024 GHI, which was made available on Tuesday, a day ahead of its scheduled release by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhlife (WHH). It, however, says Bangladesh, Mozambique, Nepal, Somalia and Togo have made slight improvements in their GHI scores even though the hunger in these countries remain too high. The GHI report makes it clear that the world is far from meeting the goal of achieving zero hunger by 2030.

বাৎসরিক বেতন বৃদ্ধিসহ অন্যান্য দাবিতে আশুলিয়ায় কর্মবিরতি পালন করেছেন বিভিন্ন পোশাক কারখানার শ্রমিকরা। পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণে রাখতে গতকালের জন্য ১৫টি কারখানায় ছুটি ঘোষণা করে কর্তৃপক্ষ। পুলিশ ও শ্রমিকরা জানান, দীর্ঘদিন ধরে বাৎসরিক বেতন ১৫ শতাংশ বাড়ানোর পাশাপাশি অর্জিত ছুটির বকেয়া প্রতি মাসে পরিশোধের দাবি জানিয়ে আসছিলেন শ্রমিকরা । এসব দাবির পাশাপাশি নিম্নতম মজুরি ২৫ হাজার টাকা করারও দাবি জানান তারা। গতকাল সকাল ৯টার দিকে প্রথম কর্মবিরতি শুরু করেন নরসিংহপুর এলাকার নাসা গ্রুপের শ্রমিকরা। এরপর দুপুরে কর্মবিরতিতে যান একই এলাকার নিউ এইজ, শারমিন ও হা-মিম গ্রুপসহ আরো বেশ কয়েকটি কারখানার শ্রমিকরা। এ সময় তারা বাৎসরিক বেতন ও ভাতা ১৫ শতাংশ বাড়ানোর পাশাপাশি ছুটির বকেয়া টাকা ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে পরিশোধের দাবি জানান। শ্রমিকদের বুঝিয়ে কাজে ফেরাতে ব্যর্থ হয়ে গতকালের জন্য কারখানা ছুটি ঘোষণা করে কর্তৃপক্ষ। এ সময় বন্ধ কারখানা খুলে দেয়াসহ তাদের যৌক্তিক দাবিগুলো মেনে নেয়ার দাবি জানিয়ে বাইপাইল-আব্দুল্লাহপুর সড়কের অবস্থান নেয়ার চেষ্টা করেন শ্রমিকরা। পরে শিল্প পুলিশ ও যৌথ বাহিনীর সদস্যরা শ্রমিকদের সড়ক থেকে সরিয়ে দেন।

টিসিবির এক কোটি কার্ডে ব্যাপক অনিয়ম হয়েছে দাবি করে বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা শেখ বশির উদ্দিন বলেছেন, ‘এসব অনিয়ম চিহ্নিত করতে চাই। এরই মধ্যে প্রায় ৫৭ লাখ কার্ড চিহ্নিত করেছি। বাংলাদেশের বিভিন্ন গ্রামে আমি নিজে ব্যক্তিগতভাবে দেখতে যাব। আশা করি আগামী চার থেকে ছয় সপ্তাহের মাঝে এখানে স্থিতি নিয়ে আসতে পারব।’ রাজধানীর পুরানা পল্টনে গতকাল ইকোনমিক রিপোর্টার্স ফোরামের (ইআরএফ) আয়োজনে ‘প্রাণ-আরএফএল মিডিয়া অ্যাওয়ার্ড’ প্রদান অনুষ্ঠানে তিনি এ কথা বলেন। এ সময় কৃষি ও কৃষি প্রক্রিয়াজাত খাত নিয়ে প্রতিবেদনের জন্য প্রিন্ট, ইলেকট্রনিক ও অনলাইন গণমাধ্যমের ১০ জন সাংবাদিককে পুরস্কৃত করা হয়। অনুষ্ঠানে বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা জানান, বর্তমানে টিসিবির ১৬টি কার্যালয় রয়েছে। গাড়িচালক, দারোয়ানসহ এসব কার্যালয়ে সর্বসাকুল্যে কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারী ১৪২ জন। প্রতিষ্ঠানটি বছরে প্রায় সাড়ে ১১ হাজার কোটি টাকার বাজেট পায়। যেখানে সরকার ভর্তুকি দেয় প্রায় সাড়ে ৪ হাজার কোটি টাকা, যা হাস্যকর বলেও মন্তব্য করেছেন তিনি। শেখ বশির উদ্দিন বলেন, ‘টিসিবি সামাজিক সুরক্ষার জন্য যে খাদ্যপণ্য বিতরণ করে, এটা তাত্ত্বিকভাবে খুবই সুন্দর একটি প্রকল্প। কিন্তু প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোকে যেভাবে ধ্বংস করে দেয়া হয়েছে, এর একটা প্রকৃষ্ট উদাহরণ হচ্ছে টিসিবি।’
