The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has urged three major groups -- Meghna Group, City Group and PHP Family -- to get listed on the stock exchanges, for developing the country’s stock market.BSEC Chairman Khondoker Rashed Maqsood made the call during a meeting with the three big groups at the BSEC conference room in the city on Tuesday, BSS reported citing to a press release.Mostafa Kamal, chairman and managing director of Meghna Group of Industries, Md Hasan, managing director of City Group and Mohammed Akther Parvez, director of PHP Group, were present at the meeting. Khondoker Rashed Maqsood said BSEC will continue to invite fundamentally strong companies to enhance the quality stocks of the capital market.

Nonbanks also see a surge in non-performing loans (NPLs) with the aggregate buildup standing over Tk 247.11 billion by latest count till last June. The volume of NPLs in the financials of non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs accounted for 33 per cent of the sector's total loan portfolio, according to Bangladesh Bank (BB) latest data. According to the BB, the total loan disbursement in this sector reached over Tk 745.34 billion by the end of June 2024, while non-performing loans increased by Tk 8.22 billion over the previous three months.

A task force has been formed with university professors, chartered accountants, and professionals to identify reasons as to why the equity market is insignificant in size compared to the country's gross domestic product. They will recommend ways to expand the market and other reforms necessary for it to thrive. The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) on Monday formed the task force, with the aim of developing the market, restoring investors' confidence, and ensuring good governance. A directive has been issued in this regard. It, however, did not mention any timeframe for the completion of the tasks. The BSEC said the task force would submit its recommendations to the commission within a 'logical' period on receipt of opinions from related parties in a bid to help attain global practices in the market

সরকারি হিসাবে দেশে বছরে ডিমের উৎপাদন হয় ২ হাজার ৩৭৪ কোটি ৯৭ লাখ পিস। এর বিপরীতে চাহিদা রয়েছে ১ হাজার ৮০৯ কোটি ৬০ লাখ পিস। এ হিসাবে চাহিদার তুলনায় উদ্বৃত্ত থাকছে ৩০ শতাংশ। অথচ ব্যবসায়ীরা উৎপাদনের সংকট দেখিয়ে প্রতিদিনই বাড়াচ্ছেন ডিমের দাম। এক সপ্তাহের ব্যবধানে ডজনপ্রতি বেড়েছে ২০-৩০ টাকা পর্যন্ত। খোলাবাজারে এখন প্রতি ডজন ডিম বিক্রি হচ্ছে ১৭০ থেকে ১৮০ টাকায়। প্রান্তিক খামারিদের অভিযোগ, দেশের পোলট্রি পণ্যের বাজারের সিংহভাগই বড় কয়েকটি কোম্পানির দখলে। তারাই মূলত বাজারের গতিপ্রকৃতি নিয়ন্ত্রণ করছে। অথচ বেশি দামে ডিম বিক্রি হলেও প্রান্তিক খামারিরা পাচ্ছেন না ন্যায্যমূল্য।

চলতি অর্থবছরের (২০২৪-২৫) তিন মাস পার হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে দুই মাসই কেটেছে রাজনৈতিক ডামাডোলের মধ্যে। কিন্তু এর পরও ৭০ হাজার কোটি টাকার বেশি রাজস্ব আহরণে সক্ষম হয়েছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। সংশ্লিষ্টরা বলছেন, গত বছরের একই সময়ের তুলনায় রাজস্ব আহরণ কিছুটা কমলেও বর্তমান প্রেক্ষাপটে তা আশাব্যঞ্জক। তিন মাসের রাজস্ব আহরণের এ প্রবাহ অব্যাহত থাকলে লক্ষ্যমাত্রা অর্জনও সম্ভব বলে মনে করেন তারা।

ভ্যাট ফাঁকি ও জরিমানা বাবদ ৭ হাজার কোটিরও বেশি টাকা পরিশোধ না করায় এস আলমের সুপার এডিবল অয়েল লিমিটেড ও এসআলম ভেজিটেবল অয়েল মিলস লিমিটেডের ব্যবসায়িক কার্যক্রম—আমদানি ও স্থানীয় বিক্রি—বন্ধ হয়ে যেতে পারে। প্রায় ৩ হাজার ৬০০ কোটি টাকা ভ্যাট ফাঁকি ও সমপরিমাণ জরিমানার অর্থ পরিশোধের জন্য এস আলম গ্রুপের ভোজ্যতেল উৎপাদনকারী প্রতিষ্ঠানকে দুটিকে তাগাদা দেওয়া হলেও এখন তারা ওই অর্থ পরিশোধ করেনি বলে জানিয়েছেন জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর) এর কর্মকর্তারা।

বিশ্বব্যাপী প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাসের চাহিদা দিন দিন বাড়ছে। সে তুলনায় এলএনজি (তরলীকৃত প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাস) উৎপাদন কমছে। ফলে সরবরাহ সংকটে বিশ্বজুড়ে অস্থিতিশীল হয়ে পড়েছে প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাসের বাজার। ৩ অক্টোবর প্রকাশিত বার্ষিক ‘‌বৈশ্বিক গ্যাস নিরাপত্তা পর্যালোচনায়’ এ তথ্য জানিয়েছে ইন্টারন্যাশনাল এনার্জি এজেন্সি (আইইএ)। খবর এসঅ্যান্ডপি গ্লোবাল কমোডিটি ইনসাইটস। আইইএ জানায়, চলতি ও আগামী বছর বিশ্বজুড়ে প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাসের চাহিদা রেকর্ড সর্বোচ্চে পৌঁছতে পারে। এর মধ্যে চলতি বছর জ্বালানি পণ্যটির মোট চাহিদা ২ দশমিক ৫ শতাংশ বেড়ে ৪ লাখ ২০ হাজার কোটি ঘনমিটারে পৌঁছতে পারে। এ সময় এশিয়া-প্যাসিফিক অঞ্চলের দেশগুলো বৈশ্বিক চাহিদা বৃদ্ধিতে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভূমিকা রাখবে। আগামী বছর বিশ্বজুড়ে প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাসের চাহিদা বাড়তে পারে ২ দশমিক ৩ শতাংশ বা ১০ হাজার কোটি ঘনমিটার। এ সময়ও এশিয়ার দেশগুলো মোট চাহিদা বৃদ্ধিতে ভূমিকা রাখবে।

দেশের প্রধান পুঁজিবাজার ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে (ডিএসই) গতকাল সূচকের পতনে লেনদেন শেষ হয়েছে। এদিন ৭৩ শতাংশ সিকিউরিটিজের দর কমেছে। পাশাপাশি এদিন আগের কার্যদিবসের তুলনায় লেনদেনও কিছুটা কমেছে। বাজার পর্যালোচনায় দেখা যায়, গতকাল ডিএসইর প্রধান সূচক ডিএসইএক্স দশমিক ৮১ শতাংশ বা ৪৪ পয়েন্ট কমে দাঁড়িয়েছে ৫ হাজার ৩৩৫ পয়েন্টে, আগের কার্যদিবসে যা ছিল ৫ হাজার ৩৭৯ পয়েন্ট। ডিএসইর শরিয়াহ সূচক ডিএসইএস গতকাল দিন শেষে সামান্য কমে ১ হাজার ১৮৯ পয়েন্টে অবস্থান করছে। নির্বাচিত কোম্পানির সূচক ডিএস-৩০ দিনের ব্যবধানে ২২ পয়েন্ট কমে ১ হাজার ৯৪২ পয়েন্টে অবস্থান করছে, আগের কার্যদিবসে যা ছিল ১ হাজার ৯৬৪ পয়েন্ট।

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) is likely to allow cash support against repo facility once a week instead of two days in a move to prompt banks manage funds more efficiently, according to central bankers. As part of the plan, the BB will sit with treasury heads of commercial banks on Wednesday and Thursday to share this matter before getting their feedback on the proposed monetary move.The officials said the move would not only force commercial lenders to seriously focus on efficient fund management, but also help make transactions in the call money market vibrant.

বাংলাদেশে আগ্নেয়গিরির অগ্ন্যুৎপাত ছাড়া পরিবেশগত সব ধরনের সমস্যা রয়েছে। আর্সেনিক, লবণাক্ততা, দূষণ, প্লাস্টিক দূষণ সবকিছুই এখানে আছে। পানির ক্ষেত্রে দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিটা খুবই ম্যানেজমেন্ট ও ব্যবস্থাপনাকেন্দ্রিক। এ ব্যবস্থাপনাটা শুধু বড় বড় প্রকল্প নিয়ে। যেকোনো একটি খাল পুনরুদ্ধার করতে গেলে তার বাজেট হয় ৭০০ কোটি টাকা। ফলে জনগণের টাকাটা সর্বোত্তম ব্যবহার হচ্ছে কিনা এটা একটা বড় কাজ। তিস্তার মানুষ এখন সর্বস্বান্ত হচ্ছে। এক সর্বস্বান্ত হয় বন্যার সময় অন্যবার হয় বন্যার পানি নেমে যাওয়ার সময় নদীভাঙনে। আমি যখন কুমিল্লা, ফেনী ও নোয়াখালী অঞ্চলে গেলাম, সেখানে মানুষের একটাই বক্তব্য—বানের পানি নেমে যাচ্ছে না। তার একটাই কারণ সেটা হলো সব খাল দখল হয়ে গেছে। আর নদী তার মুখে মরে গেছে। পানি বঙ্গোপসাগরে নামবে তারও কোনো ব্যবস্থা নেই কারণ সেখানে নানা রকমের প্রতিবন্ধকতা। আমাদের আইন-কানুন আছে আবার নাইও। আইন-কানুনগুলো অনেক মাথাভারী। এ কথা ঠিক নয় যে ওয়াটার পলিসি কেন্দ্র করে ওয়াটার অ্যাক্ট হয়েছে। ওয়াটার অ্যাক্টের সঙ্গে ওয়াটার পলিসির বেশ বড় ফারাক হয়ে গেছে। ঢাকা শহরের নদীগুলোর দূষণকারী কারা এ নিয়েও সম্পূর্ণ কোনো তালিকা নেই। বালি ও পাথর উত্তোলন নদীগুলোর জন্য আরেকটা বড় হুমকি। পরিবেশ বিভাগের তথ্য বিভাগে বলেছি যেন ফিল্ড ওরিয়েন্টেড হয়। যখন কোনো প্রজেক্ট ডিজাইন করি তখন স্থানীয় সরকার, জেলা প্রশাসন, স্থানীয় জনগোষ্ঠীর সঙ্গে কথা বললে প্রজেক্ট অনেকটা ব্যয়সাশ্রয়ী হয়ে উঠবে।

Stocks opened lower in early trading Tuesday, as major stocks plunged. The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) went down by 33.84 points or 0.63 per cent to 5,301 within the first one and half hours of trading at 11:36 am. The blue-chip DS30 index, a group of 30 prominent companies, also fell 19.07 points to 1,923 and the DSES index, which represents Shariah-based companies, dropped 8.25 points to 1,181 till then. Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 1227.87 million. Of the issues traded till then, 111 advanced, 188 declined, and 89 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor. BRAC Bank was the most traded stock when the report was filed. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also saw a negative trend till 11:52 with its All Shares Price Index (CASPI)—losing 126.63 points to stand at 14,886 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX shed 74 points to reach 9,041.

In a bid to address the ongoing volatility in the egg market, the Ministry of Commerce has granted approval for the import of 40.5 million eggs to seven designated firms. The decision, announced by the ministry's Internal Trade-1 division on Tuesday, aims to stabilize prices and ensure the availability of the essential commodity. The domestic egg market has witnessed a sharp increase in prices over the past few months, due to a supply-demand imbalance. The cost of eggs has escalated to a record high, making it unaffordable for many consumers. This crisis has prompted the government to intervene by allowing imports to supplement the local supply.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures the changes over time in the prices of a set of representative consumer items (goods and services), has been around 10 per cent since March last year. Meanwhile, central bank has raised interest rates several times to make money costlier for borrowers in a bid to rein in the inflation rate. The CPI, according to BBS, came down from 10.49 in August to 9.92 per cent in September which is a fall by 0.57 percentage points. But that is on paper. A cheaper source of protein for the low-income group of people has thus gone far beyond their reach. Over the week, the price of broiler chicken, too, has gone up by Tk.10 to Tk.20 per kg reaching between TK.200 to Tk.2010 per kg. The so-called Sonali (golden) chicken, on the other hand, is selling between Tk.260 and Tk. 280 per kg. The price hike of green vegetables has perhaps crossed all limits. Price of green chilli, as always, has gone through the roof within a week from Tk.180-Tk.200 per kg to Tk.500 per kg on Saturday (October 5) followed by a fall to Tk.400/kg the next day. Why? It is the week-long rain, the greengrocers would be quick to explain. Prices of other green vegetables, too, have been soaring.

The rapid expansion of readymade garments industry (RMGI) over the past four decades has made significant contribution to the socio-economic uplift of Bangladesh. It is also a matter of satisfaction that a majority of workers employed in this sector are female. At present, about 75 per scent RMG factories are located in the Dhaka region, viz. Dhaka city, Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur and Narayanganj. But the recent turmoil in these factories have once again proved the need for maintaining a stable working environment through coordinated efforts and team-work of all stakeholders including the workers and owners. Initiatives should be taken now to enhance the competitive edge and efficiency of the RMG sector for its sustainable growth. Loopholes in the regulatory framework should be addressed to reduce the time-lag in sending or receiving consignments. The time-frame for customs clearance should be reduced drastically and the whole exercise should be digitalized by shedding unnecessary dependence on manual procedures.

Bangladesh's economy is expected to rebound significantly over the coming year, with GDP growth making a leap to 7.1 per cent in FY2025-26, according to a latest HSBC projection. Although the growth rate has been revised to 4.5 per cent for FY2024-25, the country is set to bounce back, driven by strong export performance and rising remittances, says Frederic Neumann, Chief Asia Economist and Co-Head of Global Research Asia at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation or HSBC.
