দেশে পুরো এপ্রিলেই ঊর্ধ্বমুখী ছিল সবজির দাম। বাজারে পটোল, ঢেঁড়স, ঝিঙে, বরবটি, বেগুনসহ বেশির ভাগ সবজির কেজি বর্তমানে বিক্রি হচ্ছে ৬০-৮০ টাকায়। কোনো কোনোটা কিনতে হচ্ছে এর চেয়েও বেশি দামে। প্রতি লিটার সয়াবিন তেলের মূল্যও গত মাসে ১২-১৪ টাকা বেড়েছে। ডজনপ্রতি ডিমের দাম বেড়েছে অন্তত ২০-৩০ টাকা। বেড়েছে পেঁয়াজ ও রসুনের দামও। নিত্যপণ্যের মূল্যের এমন ঊর্ধ্বমুখী প্রবণতার মধ্যেও এপ্রিলে মূল্যস্ফীতি কমার তথ্য প্রকাশ করে বাংলাদেশ পরিসংখ্যান ব্যুরো (বিবিএস)। যদিও কীভাবে মূল্যস্ফীতি কমেছে সে ব্যাখ্যা নেই খোদ সংস্থাটির কাছেও।

ব্যক্তি ও গোষ্ঠীস্বার্থে কর অব্যাহতির পথ বন্ধ হচ্ছে। খাতির ও চাপের কাছে নতি স্বীকার করে নেয়া কর অব্যাহতির দিন আর থাকছে না। আগামী জুলাই থেকে কর অব্যাহতি দিতে পারবে না জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। সংস্থাটির কাছে এ ক্ষমতা আর থাকছে না। গতকাল কর ব্যয় নীতিমালা এবং এর ব্যবস্থাপনা কাঠামো প্রকাশ করেছে এনবিআর। এতে বলা হয়েছে, কর অব্যাহতি দিতে সংসদের অনুমোদন লাগবে। এ নীতিমালা আগামী ১ জুলাই থেকে কার্যকর হবে। নীতিমালায় বলা হয়, আয়কর আইন, মূল্য সংযোজন কর ও সম্পূরক শুল্ক আইন এবং কাস্টমস আইনের মাধ্যমে এনবিআরকে দেয়া কর অব্যাহতির সব ক্ষমতা রহিত করা হবে। বার্ষিক জাতীয় বাজেট প্রণয়ন কার্যক্রমের অংশ হিসেবে বিভিন্ন কর আইনসংশ্লিষ্ট যেকোনো কর ব্যয় অনুমোদনের চূড়ান্ত কর্তৃপক্ষ হবে জাতীয় সংসদ। সংসদ না থাকলে কর ব্যয়সংক্রান্ত বিধান জারির ক্ষমতা রাষ্ট্রপতির কাছে ন্যস্ত থাকবে।

গ্যাসের অভাবে ঝুঁকিতে দেশের শিল্প খাত। চাহিদার তুলনায় এ জ্বালানি মিলছে অর্ধেকেরও কম। আর এ সংকট কাটাতে বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনে গ্যাস সরবরাহ কমিয়ে দেবে সরকার। পাশাপাশি চলতি মে থেকে আগস্ট পর্যন্ত বাড়তি চার কার্গো এলএনজি আমদানি করে শিল্প খাতে দৈনিক ২৫ কোটি ঘনফুট গ্যাস সরবরাহ করা হবে। সচিবালয়ে গতকাল শিল্প শ্রেণীতে গ্যাস সরবরাহসংক্রান্ত দেশের শীর্ষস্থানীয় ব্যবসায়ীদের সঙ্গে এক বিশেষ সভা শেষে সাংবাদিকদের এ তথ্য জানান বিদ্যুৎ, জ্বালানি ও খনিজ সম্পদ উপদেষ্টা মুহাম্মদ ফাওজুল কবির খান। গ্যাস সরবরাহের অপ্রতুলতার কারণে শিল্পে উৎপাদনে ব্যাঘাত ঘটছে উল্লেখ করে উপদেষ্টা ফাওজুল কবির খান বলেন, ‘শিল্প উদ্যোক্তাদের সঙ্গে আলোচনা করে সবাই মিলে আমরা কতগুলো সিদ্ধান্তে এসেছি। রমজান উপলক্ষে যে গ্যাস দেয়া হতো সেখান থেকে আমরা ১৫ কোটি ঘনফুট গ্যাস বিদ্যুতের পরিবর্তে শিল্পে দেব। এটা হচ্ছে আমাদের প্রথম সিদ্ধান্ত। দ্বিতীয় সিদ্ধান্ত, মে থেকে আগস্ট পর্যন্ত অতিরিক্ত চারটি এলএনজি কার্গো আনব। এতে শিল্পে গ্যাসের বরাদ্দ ২৫ কোটি ঘনফুট বাড়বে।’

দেশের পুঁজিবাজারে এমনিতেই দীর্ঘমেয়াদি মন্দা বিরাজ করছে। এর মধ্যে গতকাল ভারত-পাকিস্তানের মধ্যে পাল্টাপাল্টি হামলার খবরে পুঁজিবাজারে বড় ধরনের ধস নেমেছে। এদিন ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জের (ডিএসই) সার্বিক সূচক ডিএসইএক্স ৩ শতাংশ কমেছে। দেশের আরেক পুঁজিবাজার চিটাগং স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জেও বড় দরপতন হয়েছে। বাজার পর্যলোচনায় দেখা যায়, গতকাল সকাল ১০টায় লেনদেন শুরুর পর থেকেই আতঙ্কিত বিনিয়োগকারীরা শেয়ার বিক্রি করতে থাকেন। এর প্রভাবে দিনভর পয়েন্ট হারায় সূচক। গতকাল দিন শেষে ডিএসইএক্স সূচক ৩ শতাংশ কমে ৪ হাজার ৮০২ পয়েন্টে দাঁড়িয়েছে। নির্বাচিত কোম্পানির সূচক ডিএস-৩০ দিনের ব্যবধানে ২ শতাংশের বেশি কমে ১ হাজার ৪৮ পয়েন্টে অবস্থান করছে। শরিয়াহ সূচক ডিএসইএস গতকাল প্রায় ৪ শতাংশ কমে ১ হাজার ১৯৩ পয়েন্টে দাঁড়িয়েছে। গতকাল সূচকের পতনে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভূমিকা রেখেছে ইসলামী ব্যাংক, ওয়ালটন হাই-টেক ইন্ডাস্ট্রিজ, আল-আরাফাহ ইসলামী ব্যাংক, ব্রিটিশ আমেরিকান টোব্যাকো বাংলাদেশ কোম্পানি (বিএটিবিসি) ও বেক্সিমকো ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালসের শেয়ার।

Bangladesh's apparel exports to the United States, its single-largest market, recorded a double-digit growth both in value and volume during the first quarter of 2025. The country's readymade-garment exports fetched US$2.22 billion from the US market during the January-March period of 2025, marking 26.66-percent growth from US$1.75 billion in the corresponding period of 2024, according to the data released on Tuesday by OTEXA, an affiliate of the US Department of Commerce. In terms of quantity, shipments came to 733.98 million square metres of apparel in a 25.24-percent growth over 586.04 million square metres in the corresponding period of 2024. Industry experts attributed export rise to the improved US market and the likely attempts by importers to clear shipments before the Trump administration imposed higher tariffs. The growth in Bangladesh's RMG exports to the US in January-March this year outpaced that of all other major suppliers, including India at 24.04 per cent, Indonesia at 20 per cent, Pakistan 17.51 per cent, Vietnam 13.98 per cent, and China at 4.11 per cent. Vietnam, however, surpassed China and earned US$3.87 billion during the first quarter of 2025. The US imported apparel worth of US$3.59 billion from China during the period, according to OTEXA data. Despite the global economic challenges, Bangladeshi products' competitive pricing, enhanced production capabilities, and commitment to sustainable and ethical manufacturing practices contributed to such robust performance, exporters said.

Bangladesh's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) slowed in April, falling 8.8 points from the previous month to 52.9, signaling a softer pace of economic expansion. The latest reading reflects weaker growth across manufacturing, construction, and services sectors, although agriculture posted a stronger rate of expansion. A PMI above 50 indicates expansion, 50 suggests no change, and below 50 signals contraction. April's reading, while still in expansionary territory, marks the lowest since October 2025, when the current growth trend began. According to the report released on Wednesday, the agriculture sector recorded its seventh consecutive month of growth, with faster expansion in both new business and business activity indices. Input costs increased at a slower pace, while the employment index returned to expansion and order backlogs contracted more slowly. Manufacturing also expanded for the eighth straight month, albeit at a slower pace. Most indices remained positive except for order backlogs, which saw a sharper contraction, continuing a nine-month streak of decline. The construction sector saw its fifth month of expansion, albeit at a reduced pace. New business, employment, and input costs all grew more slowly, while construction activity returned to growth. However, order backlogs contracted more sharply. The services sector expanded for the seventh consecutive month, though growth decelerated. Indices for new business, employment, and input costs under the services sector all showed slower expansion rates, while the business activity index slipped into contraction. The order backlog index also contracted more rapidly.

The government has planned to enhance natural gas supply to industries for next four months (May-August) by cutting supplies to the power plants and increasing imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG). According to a roadmap drawn up at a meeting on Wednesday, the industries are expected to get an additional gas of 250 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said after the meeting with business leaders at Bangladesh Secretariat.The country's industrial sector has long been suffering from severe gas supply disruptions amid less-than-required domestic production and imports of the energy. As a result, businesses allege, they have been suffering from production losses and losing competitiveness in the international markets. Elaborating his plan, the energy adviser said that around 150 mmcfd gas will be diverted from the power sector allocation while 100 mmcfd will be added by importing four extra LNG cargoes during the four-month period at a cost of around Tk 28 billion.

The main market in Bangladesh witnessed rapid erosion of stocks than in Pakistan and India on Wednesday over fear of possible spill-over impacts of further escalation of the conflict between the two countries. Investors in Bangladesh seem to have gone into a panic, having learnt that India struck nine sites in Pakistan in a retaliatory move for the April attack by gunmen on tourists on the Indian controlled side of the disputed Kashmir. So, as the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) opened the trading session they went on a selling spree, dragging the broad index down 94 points in just 17 minutes.There were then timid signs of recovery for a while but the market reverted to the depreciation mode, leading to a record single-day fall of 3.01 per cent in four years to 4802.41 points.The last time when such a big fall of the index happened was on April 4, 2021. The DSEX lost 3.44 per cent on the day as investors dumped their holdings following the enforcement of countrywide lockdown to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Bangladesh made a routine payment equivalent to US$ 1.88 billion to the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) against imports during the March-April period of the current calendar year, officials said. Despite making such a high volume of overseas payments, the country's foreign exchange (forex) reserve still over $20 billion ($20.29 billion in exact) in accordance with IMF BPM6 calculation on Wednesday from $22.06 billion a day ago, according to the central bank latest statistics. The stock of foreign currencies was $25.68 billion as per the Bangladesh Bank (BB)'s traditional calculation on Wednesday (May 07) from $27.44 billion of the previous working day. The amount of such payment rose to $1.88 billion in the last installment from its previous one of $1.75 billion following higher imports from the member countries particularly from India. The central bank has already remitted the fund to the ACU headquarters in Tehran in line with the existing provisions of the nine-member union. Under the existing provisions, outstanding import bills and interests thereof are to be paid at the end of every two months among the member countries.

The price of food items remained the major contributor to overall inflation by 42.71 per cent, reveals the April issue of the report titled "Monthly economic Update and Outlook" prepared by the General Economics Division (GED) of the planning commission. Dr. Monzur Hossain, Member (Secretary) of the GED placed the first issue of the report on Wednesday at a press briefing at the NEC auditorium following the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec). Planning Advisor Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud, members and secretaries of the planning ministry and planning commission attended the event. "From now on, the GED will publish an updated situation of the country's economy every month. As a result of this report, it will be easier for the government to adopt various macroeconomic policies," Manjur Hossain said at the event.

Vitol Asia Pte Ltd. continues dominating the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market in Bangladesh, with securing two more cargo supply bids on Wednesday. The Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase (ACCGP) on the day approved two separate proposals by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, allowing Petrobangla to buy two cargoes of LNG from the Singapore-based company. One of the cargoes will cost the exchequer Tk 5.49 billion and another Tk 5.55 billion. Earlier on April 29, the company had secured the bid to supply one cargo of LNG at a cost of Tk 5.44 billion, following two other cargoes awarded on April 22 and April 8 respectively. During the ousted Awami League government, Vitol was one of the top LNG suppliers to Bangladesh.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Wednesday approved a total of nine projects, including three new initiatives and six revised ones, with an estimated cost of Tk 37.56 billion. Of the total project cost, the government will provide Tk 27.98 billion, while the implementing agencies will contribute Tk 1.45 billion from their own funds. The remaining Tk 8.13 billion will be sourced from foreign loans and grants. Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud shared the details at a press briefing held at the NEC auditorium in the capital following the Ecnec meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus. The planning adviser said that the meeting approved a project titled "Prevention of Violence and Harmful Practices against Children and Women in Bangladesh", involving Tk 1.70 billion, with a grant worth Tk 1.3 billion from the UNICEF. The project, which will be implemented by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, is scheduled for completion by March 2029. It will focus on training programmes aimed at enhancing the safety of women and children. However, as the project currently lacks clearly defined activities, the Ecnec meeting recommended setting specific indicators to measure the outcomes and effectiveness of such initiatives, he added. The documents placed at the meeting reveal that the six revised projects approved in the Ecnec have faced a total of cost overruns worth over Tk 45.95 billion, due to delays following several complexities. The revised estimated costs of these projects reached Tk 95.7 billion, 92.38 per cent higher than the initial cost. The meeting approved a revised proposal for the "WECARE Phase 1: Jhenaidah-Jashore Highway Development Project", increasing its cost to Tk 66.27 billion. Originally approved in January 2021 with an estimated cost of Tk 41.88 billion, the project was scheduled for completion by December 2023.

Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday stressed the importance of establishing a strategic partnership to facilitate Korean investment in Bangladesh. They identified a number of sectors, including infrastructure development, logistics, electronics, ICT, digital services, renewable energy and textiles, as potential areas for Korean investment. They also called for necessary reforms, especially in the fields of financial liberalisation, easy repatriation of profit and automation in tax regime, to boost Korean investment in Bangladesh. করদাতাদের চাহিদা ও মতামতের ভিত্তিতে অনলাইনে রিটার্ন দাখিল প্রক্রিয়া ক্রমশ সহজীকরণ ও অধিকতর করদাতাবান্ধবকরণের ফলে এরই মধ্যে এ বছর ১৬ লাখের বেশি করদাতা অনলাইনে রিটার্ন দাখিল করেছেন। এ সময় ২০ লাখের বেশি করদাতা ই-রিটার্নের জন্য রেজিস্ট্রেশন সম্পন্ন করেছেন। বুধবার (৭ মে) গণমাধ্যমে পাঠানো এনবিআরের সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে তথ্যটি জানানো হয়েছে। বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে বলা হয়, আয়কর দিবস পরবর্তী সময়েও জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড অনলাইনে আয়কর রিটার্ন দাখিলের সেবাটি চালু রেখেছে। সেই সঙ্গে রিটার্ন দাখিলের পর করদাতা কর্তৃক রিটার্নে কোনো ভুলত্রুটি পরিলক্ষিত হলে আয়কর আইন ২০২৩ এর ১৮০(১) ধারা মোতাবেক মূল রিটার্ন দাখিলের ১৮০ দিনের মধ্যে ১৮০(২) ধারায় ঘরে বসেই সহজে অনলাইনে সংশোধিত রিটার্ন দাখিল করতে পারছেন। অদ্যাবধি ৭ হাজার ২২৫ জন করদাতা অনলাইনে সংশোধিত রিটার্ন দাখিল করেছেন।

Tech giant Google has teamed up with Elementl Power to develop three advanced nuclear energy sites, as the demand for electricity driven by artificial intelligence continues to surge. Announced on Wednesday, the collaboration will see Google invest in projects expected to generate 600 megawatts of power each, AP reports.
