After a seven-month streak of declining growth, private sector credit in Bangladesh rebounded in March 2024, rising to 7.57% – the highest in four months, according to a recent Bangladesh Bank report. In February, credit growth had dropped to a 21-year low of 6.82%. The March figure reflects a notable improvement of 0.75 percentage points, equivalent to an increase of around Tk35,000 crore. The central bank's data shows that total outstanding credit to the private sector stood at Tk15.98 lakh crore at the end of February and rose to Tk17.19 lakh crore by the end of March. Bankers attributed the rebound to increased import demand for essential commodities throughout the month of Ramadan, which spanned all of March. The shrimp fry producer Beach Hatchery posted a 214 percent year-on-year surge in profit to Tk 77.9 million for the January- March quarter of FY25, driven by higher revenue and a reduction in operating expenses. Its earnings per share (EPS) jumped to Tk 1.88 for the third quarter of FY25 from Tk 0.60 for the same period a year ago, according to the price sensitive information published on Tuesday. In the three months to March, Beach Hatchery gained a 125 per cent year-on-year growth in revenue to Tk 147.91 million on the back of high demand. However, the cost of fish fry production was up only 40.54 per cent to Tk 41.45 million in the third quarter to March, compared to the same quarter last year. So, operating expenses were cut by a remarkable 23.38 percent year-on-year in the quarter through March. That supported a 193 per cent increase in gross profit to Tk 106.46 million in Q3 of FY25, compared to Q3 of FY24. The company has not given any explanation of how it brought down the production cost. Beach Hatchery produces and sells shrimp fry in Bangladesh. The company was incorporated in 1994 and is headquartered in Dhaka. For the nine months through March this year, the shrimp fry producer reported a 139 per cent year-on-year jump in profit to Tk 189.6 million.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday welcomed Canada's Indo-Pacific Trade Representative Paul Thoppil at the State Guesthouse Jamuna, where the two sides discussed ways to deepen bilateral economic cooperation and expand investment opportunities. Mr Thoppil, on his second official visit to Bangladesh, is leading a high-level business delegation comprising senior executives from some of Canada's most recognisable companies, including Bell Helicopter, BlackBerry, Gildan Activewear, JCM Power, and Advantech Wireless Communications, said a spokesperson for the CA Office. Several Asian airlines said on Wednesday they were re-routing or cancelling flights to and from Europe because of fighting between India and Pakistan. Why go for imported expensive products when local buys of veritably same-quality substitutes can save one over 35-percent expenses is a moot question prompted now by domestic industrial expansion. A prime example being cited is homegrown toiletry and beauty products that are increasingly substituting expensive imports that drain on Bangladesh's limited foreign-exchange reserves. Start with everyday-used shaving foam -- and Asifur Rahman finds no reason why he should go for the buy of an import. A mid-level banker working in Dhaka's bustling financial district of Motijheel, Rahman starts his day -- as do many urban professionals-with a shave. For years, he had relied on imported Gillette shaving foam, manufactured in India using raw materials from the USA. Occasionally, he opted for pricier UK-made alternatives. Few months ago, while shopping at a local grocery store in RK Mission Road in the capital, he picked a can of locally-manufactured shaving foam, at the grocer's tipoff. To his surprise, he finds no noticeable difference in quality. More importantly, the price is significantly lower: Tk 330 compared to Tk 510 for the imported brand-a saving of over 35 per cent. "Incidentally, I took the local brand, and since then, I've been using it regularly," he says. "It feels the same but costs much less."

The government has asked all deputy commissioners (DCs) and its agencies to enhance monitoring to prevent the smuggling of spices and keep the price of the essential items under control during and ahead of the upcoming Muslim festival, Eid-ul-Azha. The National Security Intelligence (NSI) has sent a set of suggestions to the different state entities, including the commerce ministry, in this regard. The suggestions include ensuring adequate stock and increasing import of such spices as per the demand. It also recommended reducing the assessment value (per ton) and stopping import of spices through land ports. The intelligence report has suggested importing spices through Chattogram and Mongla ports only instead of land ports aiming to avert the smuggling of spices. The NSI has asked the commerce ministry to monitor the wholesale and retail spice market and take stern action against hoarders. The spices are: cumin, cardamom, bay leaves, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns, nutmeg and mace. When contacted, a senior official of the commerce ministry said, "We have kept a close watch on importers, wholesalers and retail traders so that they cannot hike the prices of aromatic spices during the upcoming holy sacrificial festival."

The record inflow of remittance, coupled with steady growth in export receipts, helped significantly narrow down the country's current account deficit (CAD) during the July-March period of the ongoing fiscal year. Although import growth showed some increase, it was much lower than that of remittance and exports, giving a much-needed impetus to the country's balance of payments (BOP). According to the Bangladesh Bank data, the current account deficit stood at $659 million in the first nine months of FY25, a sharp decline from $4.40 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year. As a result, the overall balance of payments deficit improved by $3.69 billion to reach $1.07 billion, down from $4.76 billion recorded during the same period of FY24. Other key BOP components also showed positive trends. The financial account recorded a surplus of $1.31 billion, which was only $901 million surplus in the same period of FY24. Seeking anonymity, a Bangladesh Bank official said remittance and export earnings registered 27.60 per cent and 9.50 per cent growth, respectively, until March of this financial year, while imports grew by 5.60 per cent. "So, the robust growth in remittance and exports largely contributed to the significant improvement in the current account deficit," he said. Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Dr AK Enamul Haque said soon after taking charge, the interim government intensified its efforts to prevent illicit fund outflow while depreciating the local currency against the American greenback in recent times.

বাংলাদেশের টেকসই উন্নয়ন নিশ্চিত করতে দ্রুত পরিবর্তনশীল বৈশ্বিক পরিস্থিতির মধ্যে ডিজিটাল সমতা, জলবায়ু অর্থায়ন এবং আঞ্চলিক ও টেকসই অর্থনীতিতে সহযোগিতা বাড়ানোর জন্য আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন অর্থ উপদেষ্টা ড. সালেহউদ্দিন আহমেদ। ইতালির মিলানে আয়োজিত এশীয় উন্নয়ন ব্যাংকের (এডিবি) ৫৮তম বার্ষিক সভায় তিনি এ আহ্বান জানান। বাংলাদেশের প্রতিনিধি দলের নেতৃত্বে ছিলেন অর্থ উপদেষ্টা ড. সালেহউদ্দিন আহমেদ। এ সময় সঙ্গে ছিলেন অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের (ইআরডি) সচিব মো. শাহরিয়ার কাদের ছিদ্দিকীসহ অন্যরা। অনুষ্ঠানে সালেহউদ্দিন আহমেদ বলেন, ‘নোবেল বিজয়ী অধ্যাপক ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশ স্বচ্ছতা, অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক প্রবৃদ্ধি ও টেকসই উন্নয়নের পথে এক ঐতিহাসিক পরিবর্তন ঘটাচ্ছে।’ এ সময় এডিবির কাছে চারটি প্রধান খাতে উন্নত সহযোগিতার আহ্বান জানিয়ে তিনি বলেন, ‘ডিজিটাল অন্তর্ভুক্তি ও অবকাঠামো, ই-গভর্ন্যান্স, ডিজিটাল শিক্ষা সম্প্রসারণ; নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানি, জলবায়ুবান্ধব কৃষি এবং উপকূলীয় সুরক্ষায় অধিক ছাড়যুক্ত অর্থায়ন; দক্ষিণ ও দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার মধ্যে বাণিজ্য, শক্তি ও সেবায় আন্তঃসীমান্ত বিনিয়োগ ত্বরান্বিত করা এবং টেকসই অর্থায়নসহ উন্নয়ন চাহিদা পূরণের জন্য ছাড়যুক্ত তহবিল এবং উদ্ভাবনী অর্থনৈতিক সহযোগিতা বৃদ্ধি প্রয়োজন।’

ভারতের পেট্রাপোল বন্দর ও কাস্টমসে লিংক সার্ভিস (অনলাইন সিস্টেম) কাজ না করায় বেনাপোল-পেট্রাপোল বন্দরের মধ্যে পণ্য আমদানি-রফতানি বিঘ্নিত হচ্ছে। এর ফলে বাংলাদেশের অনেক শিল্প-কারখানায় কাঁচামালের সংকট দেখা দিতে পারে। অন্যদিকে রফতানি পণ্যও যথাসময়ে পৌঁছানো সম্ভব হচ্ছে না। গত সোমবার (২৮ এপ্রিল) এ পরিস্থিতি চলছে। এতে পেট্রাপোল বন্দরে পণ্যজট দেখা দিয়েছে। এরই মধ্যে বেনাপোল স্থলবন্দরে প্রবেশের অপেক্ষায় রয়েছে পণ্যবোঝাই দেড় হাজার ট্রাক।

ব্যাংক-বহির্ভূত আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠান (এনবিএফআই) প্রাইম ফাইন্যান্স অ্যান্ড ইনভেস্টমেন্ট লিমিটেড ৩১ ডিসেম্বর সমাপ্ত ২০২২ হিসাব বছরের নিরীক্ষিত আর্থিক প্রতিবেদনের ওপর ভিত্তি করে বিনিয়োগকারীদের জন্য কোনো লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা করেনি। এ-সংক্রান্ত রেকর্ড ডেটের কারণে গতকাল স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ার লেনদেন বন্ধ ছিল। রেকর্ড ডেট শেষে আজ শেয়ারটির লেনদেন চালু হবে। ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জ (ডিএসই) সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। তথ্যানুসারে, সমাপ্ত ২০২২ হিসাব বছরে প্রাইম ফাইন্যান্সের শেয়ারপ্রতি লোকসান হয়েছে ৩ টাকা ২ পয়সা, আগের হিসাব বছরে যা ছিল ৬৯ পয়সা। ৩১ ডিসেম্বর ২০২২ শেষে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ারপ্রতি নিট সম্পদমূল্য (এনএভিপিএস) দাঁড়িয়েছে ৬ টাকা ৯৯ পয়সায়।

বীমা খাতে তালিকাভুক্ত ফিনিক্স ইন্স্যুরেন্স লিমিটেডের চলতি ২০২৫ হিসাব বছরের প্রথম প্রান্তিকে (জানুয়ারি-মার্চ) নিট মুনাফা কমেছে প্রায় ২০ শতাংশ। কোম্পানি সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। তথ্যানুসারে, চলতি হিসাব বছরের প্রথম প্রান্তিকে ফিনিক্স ইন্স্যুরেন্সের কর-পরবর্তী নিট মুনাফা হয়েছে ১ কোটি ৫৫ লাখ টাকা, আগের হিসাব বছরে যা ছিল ১ কোটি ৯৫ লাখ টাকা। সে হিসাবে এক বছরের ব্যবধানে কোম্পানিটির নিট মুনাফা কমেছে ২০ দশমিক ৩৭ শতাংশ। আলোচ্য হিসাব বছরে ফিনিক্স ইন্স্যুরেন্সের শেয়ারপ্রতি সমন্বিত আয় (ইপিএস) হয়েছে ৩৯ পয়সা, আগের হিসাব বছরে যা ছিল ৪৮ পয়সা। ৩১ মার্চ ২০২৫ শেষে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ারপ্রতি নিট সম্পদমূল্য (এনএভিপিএস) দাঁড়িয়েছে ৩৩ টাকা ৩২ পয়সায়।

DBH Finance secured a "moderate" 2.4 per cent year-on-year increase in profit to Tk 1,008 million in 2024, a year marked by economic and political upheavals, having kept non-performing loans (NPLs) remarkably low. "Our growth is not bad in consideration of the overall situation," said Managing Director of DBH Finance Nasimul Baten. NPLs remain below 1 per cent of total loans disbursed by the non-bank financial institution (NBFI) at a time when a significant number of its peers and banks are struggling to survive with high amounts of defaulted loans. The industry average of such loans is more than 35 per cent. Loans given by DBH Finance so far amount to Tk 150 billion including Tk 11.05 billion disbursed in 2024. The company's loan book could have been expanded more if the inflation were at a tolerable level and in that case earnings would have been higher, said Mr Baten. DBH Finance's performance has remained consistent since its inception in 1996 when it comes to limiting defaults, he said. The company's prudence in loan disbursement against housing projects, including apartments and residential group projects, helped maintain a low level of NPLs.
