It would be easy to misdiagnose the challenges China’s economy faces and underestimate its long-term growth potential. In fact, internal imbalances and policy-induced uncertainty – not a hostile external environment – are generating the most powerful growth headwinds, and these problems are entirely surmountable. The Advisors Council Committee on Government Purchase (ACCGB) on Wednesday approved a number of proposals to procure rice, wheat, sugar, LNG, fertiliser to meet local demands and award contracts for upgradation of landing stations. Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed presided over the meeting held at the Cabinet Division. As per the decisions, as per a proposal of the Ministry of Food, its subordinate body Directorate General of Food will import 50,000 metric tonnes of non-bashmoti boiled rice, reports UNB. Indian Pattabhi Agro Foods Private Limited, selected through open tender, will supply the bulk rice at a cost of Tk 2.86 billion (286.20 crore), with per metric tonne at $477. Under a separate proposal of the same ministry, the Directorate General of Food will import 50,000 MT of wheat.

Bangladesh Bank has assured the public that there is no liquidity crisis in the banking sector, emphasizing that depositors’ funds remain secure. The government on Wednesday announced its decision to procure 0.9 million tonnes of rice and paddy from the upcoming Aman harvest season.Under the procurement plan, parboiled rice will be purchased at Tk 47 per kg, white rice at Tk 46 per kg, and paddy at Tk 33 per kg. The buying period will span from November 17, 2024, to March 15, 2025.The decision was finalized at a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC), held in the Cabinet conference room and chaired by the committee's head, financial adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed. The government aims to purchase 0.35 million tonnes of paddy, 0.55 million tonnes of parboiled rice, and 0.1 million tonnes of white rice (atap) during the Aman season. The procurement price has been set at Tk 33 per kg for paddy, Tk 47 per kg for parboiled rice, and Tk 46 per kg for white rice. The procurement period will run from November 17, 2024, to February 28, 2025, for paddy and parboiled rice, and until March 15, 2025, for white rice.

A latest World Bank financing worth US$400 million is expected for strengthening financial-safety net and crisis preparedness in Bangladesh, officials said about the funding that specially focuses tidying up the banking sector. The money will go for bankrolling the Financial Sector Support Project (FSSP) -II. Total tenure of the project will be five years. Under the proposal, Bangladesh will achieve at least six outcomes that include enacting Distressed Asset Management Act (DAMA) and stress test based on AQR (Asset Quality Review) for all the scheduled banks within the second and third years of the project.

Japanese companies operating in Bangladesh continue to face difficulties in doing business due to procedural complexities even after the change of government. They pointed out complexities in tax systems, customs clearance, financial regulation and inconsistent policies, according to a survey conducted among the companies during September 19-29 last. Suggesting reforms in these areas, the survey report says taxation and customs are the most complicated procedures for the companies, followed by visa and work permit, financial and banking regulation, administrative procedure, inconsistent policies, corruption, and institutional problems.

Both consumers and farmers have fallen in difficulties amid a surge in potato prices further. The potato price has further increased to Tk 70-75 from Tk 60-65 a kg, battering consumers. Habibur Rahman Molla, a potato and spice trader at Rayerbazar-Beribadh in the capital, told the FE that potato prices went up to Tk 55 a kg at cold storages from Tk 46-48 a kg few days back. He said they were selling potato to retailers at Tk 58-60 a kg considering the wastage. Meanwhile, the farmers of the northern and central regions have also fallen into great difficulties as seed potato prices have increased to Tk 85-95 a kg.
