Core inflation fired up over double-digit count for the first time in Bangladesh last August amid price spikes, especially as non-food prices rose significantly, officials said. The core inflation rose to 10.57 per cent in August on a point-to-point basis from 8.66 per cent a month before, according to the central bank's latest statistics. It was 9.52 per cent in December 2022. Currently, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) is measuring the core inflation by excluding food and fuel components from the consumer price index (CPI).The central bank had taken a strong measure by announcing a plan for increasing the policy rate twice by October 2024 after calculating the latest core- inflation figures in its bid to cool the mercury.

The eastern region of Bangladesh has suffered a loss of around Tk 144.21 billion due to recent floods, according to a study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). The local think tank disclosed the information at a press briefing at its office in Dhaka on Sunday on aftermath and rehabilitation after floods in the eastern region, including in Cumilla, Feni, Noakhali and Lakshmipur districts. While presenting the data, CPD’s Executive Director Dr Fahmida Khatun said their assessment focused on Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Feni, Khagrachhari, Cox's Bazar, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Lakshmipur, and Brahmanbaria districts.

State producer Saudi Aramco increased the official selling price of its main Arab Light crude grade by 90 cents to a premium of $2.20 a barrel against the regional benchmark for buyers in Asia, according to a price list seen by Bloomberg. The company was expected to boost the premium by 65 cents a barrel, according to a survey of traders and refiners. At the same time, Aramco cut the price of all grades to the US and Europe.

Former chairman of Mercantile Bank AKM Shaheed Reza has announced his intention to sell 58 lakh shares of the bank through the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). Reza, who was the chairman of Mercantile Bank in 2018, currently holds 4.27% or 4.72 crore shares in the bank. According to his announcement on the DSE, he will sell the shares at the prevailing market price on the public market or block market within 31 October. On Thursday, Mercantile Bank shares increased by 0.98%, reaching Tk10.30. At this price, the total value of his shares for sale amounts to Tk6 crore.

Islami Bank shares plunged by 9.92% today (6 October), causing the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) to dip below the 5,400 mark for the first time in 41 days. State-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has failed to float an open tender for setting up 10 grid-connected solar power plants in the private sector, despite a top-level decision by the Power Division as part of renewable energy promotion. "The officials concerned have not been able to complete their preparations to float the tender, even though the decision is being given the utmost priority by the interim government," said a source requesting anonymity. Earlier, the Power Division directed the BPDB to float the tender for the development of 10 grid-connected solar power plants in the private sector, each with a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW), totalling 500 MW.

Phoenix Finance and Investments has reported a staggering loss of Tk1,323 crore from 2021 to June 2024, primarily attributed to the fallout from loan scams that plagued the non-bank financial institution, according to the company insiders.
