The Bangladesh Bank has raised the interest rate on credit card loans by 5 percentage points to 25 per cent to ensure effective loan risk management as well as align with the policy rate and banks' rising funding costs. It issued a circular in this regard on Sunday, asking banks to follow the new directive to fix interest rates. The new directive will take effect on January 1 next year, according to the circular. Banks would also determine the interest rate within this limit based on their loan demand and funding availability, it added. The central bank further stated that Islamic Shariah-based banks would adjust their profit rates on investments in line with this guideline, while all other instructions would remain unchanged. The directive was issued under the power conferred by sections 29(2)(cha) and 45 of the Bank Company Act 1991.

Local active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) producers have sought a low-cost refinancing facility, aiming to avail affordable capital for the sector. They have also requested the authorities concerned to expedite the implementation of the API policy 2018 in order to provide the promised incentives. The Bangladesh API and Intermediaries Manufacturers Association (BAIMA) recently wrote to the finance ministry in this regard. The finance adviser has asked the finance secretary to look into it and take required steps. A ministry official said they were scrutinising the matter to take the next course of action. Bangladesh currently imports 90 per cent of its APIs, resulting in an annual outflow of foreign currency exceeding $1 billion. Developing a robust local API industry can significantly reduce this dependency on imports, thus conserving valuable foreign exchange reserves, according to BAIMA.

The investors will be entitled to a full tax exemption for the first 10 years of their operations, according to a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on November 27. The rate of exemption will be 50 per cent for the next three years, followed by 25 per cent for the rest two years. The power plants commencing commercial production between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2035 will be eligible for the tax benefits. Cyclone Remal costs Bangladesh around US$622 million in economic losses and damage due to non-operation of one of the country’s two operational floating, storage and re-gasification units (FSRUs), the US-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) revealed Monday. “The storm reportedly cost Bangladesh US$600 million in economic losses and damage, in addition to the US$22 million demanded by the Summit LNG Terminal Company – partly owned by Japan’s JERA (16.5%) and Mitsubishi (25%) – for contractual payments while the terminal was offline,” the IEEFA stated in a report.

The third review mission of International Monetary Fund (IMF) is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today (3 December) to assess the progress in meeting the conditions for releasing the fourth tranche of the $4.7 billion loan agreement.
