A much-sought-after bidding round offering some 26 offshore hydrocarbon blocks to potential international oil companies (IOCs) with sweetened terms is expected to be launched shortly, says a senior official of Petrobangla. The energy and mineral resources division (EMRD) under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) has forwarded the model production-sharing contract (MPSCs) to the cabinet committee on economic affairs for final approval. The MPSC is expected to get the seal of approval in the cabinet committee next week and the bid round for the offshore oil-and-gas exploration would be launched immediate after obtaining the nod, the state corporation official adds.

Dr. Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), on Saturday warned that the government’s practice of borrowing from the central bank to meet budget deficits is ‘suicidal’ for the national economy. Such borrowing fuels inflation and severely erodes the purchasing power of general public, she said at a shadow parliamentary debate organised by Debate for Democracy at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC), UNB reports. She urged the government to prioritise international sources instead of banking channels to mitigate deficit pressures. Addressing the upcoming FY 2026-27 budget, Dr. Fahmida advocated for a ‘cost-effective’ budget with clear policy directions.

বৈশ্বিক বাজারে জ্বালানির দাম বৃদ্ধি, ডলার সংকট ও আমদানিনির্ভরতার চাপে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতি 'এনার্জি ট্র্যাপ' বা জ্বালানি ফাঁদে পড়ার ঝুঁকিতে রয়েছে বলে সতর্ক করেছেন বিশেষজ্ঞরা। আজ শনিবার (২ মে) পাওয়ার অ্যান্ড পার্টিসিপেশন রিসার্চ সেন্টার (পিপিআরসি) আয়োজিত 'আজকের এজেন্ডা: জ্বালানির ফাঁদে বন্দি অর্থনীতি?' শীর্ষক ওয়েবিনারে এই আলোচনা করা হয়। আলোচনায় বলা হয়, সরবরাহে সীমাবদ্ধতা, চাহিদা-নির্ভর প্রতিক্রিয়া এবং যোগাযোগ ঘাটতির সমন্বয়ে সংকটের তীব্রতা বেড়েছে। শুরুর দিকের কিছু ত্রুটি দ্রুতই প্যানিক বায়িংয়ে রূপ নেয়, ফলে অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে জ্বালানির চাহিদা হঠাৎ বেড়ে যায়। রেশনিংসহ বিভিন্ন পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হলেও অনিশ্চয়তার কারণে পরিস্থিতি আরও জটিল হয়ে ওঠে। ভবিষ্যতে আপদকালীন সময়ে জ্বালানি নিরাপত্তা নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন সংশ্লিষ্টরা।
