The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) has increased fees for all services provided to exporters, effective from today. Political instability and liquidity crunch have been identified as the most significant challenges facing the capital market this year, according to a new survey by Lanka Bangla Securities – the country's leading brokerage firm. The survey, titled Bangladesh Capital Market Sentiment Survey 2025, revealed that respondents viewed the election of a stable political government and improved macroeconomic conditions as the most positive factors influencing the market in 2025.

The interim government has been working hard over the last six months or so to guarantee political stability conducive to undertake economic repair work of macroeconomic crisis that it has inherited from the corrupt Hasina regime. This will be a difficult task to achieve in the foreseeable future given the extent of the crisis. The interim government also needs to move forward to undertake a series of necessary reform measures to create a conducive environment for an enduring democratic system to function in the country. This will be a stupendous task for the interim government given the country's tumultuous history since independence in 1971. Bangladresh's political landscape since then has been marked by one-party rule, military coups, and a gradual erosion of democracy under civilian governments reaching the point where for 15 years and a half until early August last year, the country was ruled by a highly corrupt and repressive authoritarian regime with a democratic pretense.

চলতি ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরের প্রথম সাত মাসে (জুন-জানুয়ারি) রেকর্ড ৬১৬ দশমিক ৫০ মিলিয়ন ডলারের পণ্য রফতানি করেছে কুমিল্লা রফতানি প্রক্রিয়াকরণ এলাকা কর্তৃপক্ষ (ইপিজেড)। অর্থবছরের বাকি পাঁচ মাসে এটি ১ হাজার মিলিয়ন ডলার ছাড়িয়ে যেতে পারে বলে আশা করছেন সংশ্লিষ্টরা। বিগত বছরগুলোয় একই সময়ে এমন রফতানির রেকর্ড নেই, এবারই প্রথম এমন সাফল্য এসেছে। ইপিজেড সূত্রে জানা গেছে, দক্ষিণ চর্থা এলাকায় ২০০০ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয় কুমিল্লা ইপিজেড। এখানে ৪৮টি শিল্প-কারখানা রয়েছে, যেখানে কর্মরত রয়েছেন ৫০ হাজারের বেশি কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারী। কুমিল্লা ইপিজেড থেকে গত তিন অর্থবছরে ২ হাজার ৯৩৩ দশমিক ৬৪ মিলিয়ন ডলারের পণ্য রফতানি হয়েছে। তবে ২০২১-২৪ পর্যন্ত রফতানি কমে গিয়েছিল। ২০২১-২২ অর্থবছরে ৮১৪ দশমিক ৮২ মিলিয়ন ডলারের পণ্য রফতানি হয়েছে। ২০২২-২৩ অর্থবছরে ৭৯০ দশমিক ৯৫ মিলিয়ন ডলারের পণ্য রফতানি হয়। ২০২৩-২৪ অর্থবছরে ৭১১ দশমিক ৩৭ মিলিয়ন ডলারের পণ্য যায়। দুই বছরের ব্যবধানে প্রায় ১০৩ দশমিক ৮২ মিলিয়ন ডলার কমে যায় রফতানি।

The prices of fuel in Bangladesh will remain unchanged for March 2025, as per the latest directive from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division. বিদেশী বিনিয়োগের ক্ষেত্রে যেকোনো অর্থনীতিতে প্রাধান্য পায় প্রত্যক্ষ বৈদেশিক বিনিয়োগ (এফডিআই)। এর বাইরে বিনিয়োগ ও দক্ষ জনশক্তি আকর্ষণে সাম্প্রতিক বছরগুলোয় গোল্ডেন ভিসার মতো বিকল্প জনপ্রিয় হয়েছে। বর্তমানে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, যুক্তরাজ্য, সংযুক্ত আরব আমিরাত (ইউএই), বাহরাইন, কানাডা, সুইজার‍ল্যান্ডসহ শতাধিক দেশ এ ধরনের ভিসা দিচ্ছে। উল্লেখযোগ্যসংখ্যক সম্পদশালী ব্যক্তি গোল্ডেন ভিসার মাধ্যমে এসব দেশে সম্পদ স্থানান্তরও করছেন। সংশ্লিষ্ট দেশে বিনিয়োগের শর্তে গোল্ডেন ভিসার জন্য আবেদনের সুযোগ দেয়া হয়। আবেদনকারী সাধারণত রিয়েল এস্টেট বা ব্যবসার মাধ্যমে বিনিয়োগ করতে পারেন। ভিসার প্রকারভেদে আবেদনকারীকে কয়েক লাখ থেকে কয়েক কোটি ডলার পর্যন্ত বিনিয়োগ করতে হয় বলে জানিয়েছে বিনিয়োগ অভিবাসন পরামর্শক প্রতিষ্ঠান হেনলি অ্যান্ড পার্টনারস। প্রতিষ্ঠানটির তথ্যমতে, গোল্ডেন ভিসা কর্মসূচি উচ্চ সম্পদশালী ব্যক্তিদের পছন্দের দেশে বসবাসের সুযোগ দেয়। এ ভিসাধারীরা পূর্ণ আইনি অধিকারসহ সে দেশে বসবাস, কাজ, শিক্ষাগ্রহণ ও স্বাস্থ্যসেবা সুবিধা পান। গোল্ডেন ভিসাধারীর পরিবারের সদস্যরাও সংশ্লিষ্ট দেশে বসবাসের সুযোগ পেতে পারেন। বর্তমানে ইবি-৫ ইমিগ্র্যান্ট ইনভেস্টর প্রোগ্রামের আওতায় যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে গোল্ডেন ভিসা পাওয়া যায়। তবে ৮ লাখ ডলার বিনিয়োগের শর্তে গোল্ডেন ভিসা দেয়ার নতুন নিয়ম চালু করতে যাচ্ছে দেশটি। এ ভিসা পেতে আবেদনকারীকে আলাদা করে গুনতে হবে ৫০ হাজার ডলার। এ ভিসার আওতায় গ্রিন কার্ডের মতোই স্থায়ী বসবাসের অনুমতি ও নাগরিকত্ব পাওয়ার সুযোগ মিলবে।

চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের বহির্নোঙরে থাকা বড় জাহাজ থেকে আমদানি পণ্য বোঝাইয়ের পর লাইটার জাহাজগুলোকে ৭২ ঘণ্টার মধ্যে বন্দরসীমানা ছাড়তে নির্দেশনা জারি করেছে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ। রাষ্ট্রীয় প্রয়োজনে এবং বাজারে দ্রব্যমূল্য স্থিতিশীল রাখতে জনস্বার্থে এমন নির্দেশ দিয়ে একটি বিজ্ঞপ্তি জারি করেছে বন্দর। সম্প্রতি এ নির্দেশ জারি করা হয়। বন্দরের উপসংরক্ষকের স্বাক্ষর করা এ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে বলা হয়েছে, পবিত্র রমজান মাসে নিত্যপ্রয়োজনীয় পণ্যসহ সব পণ্যের সরবরাহ নির্বিঘ্ন রাখা, বাজারে দ্রব্যমূল্য স্থিতিশীল রাখা এবং চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের কার্যক্রম নিরবচ্ছিন্ন রাখা ও নিরাপদ নৌ চলাচলের স্বার্থে মালামাল বোঝাই করার পর লাইটার জাহাজগুলোকে ৭২ ঘণ্টার মধ্যে বন্দরসীমানা ত্যাগ করার নির্দেশ দেয়া গেল। অন্যথায় চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর আইন এবং আন্তর্জাতিক বন্দর ও জাহাজ সুবিধা (আইএসপিএস) কোড অনুযায়ী প্রযোজ্য আইনানুগ ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করা হবে বলে বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে জানানো হয়েছে।

খেজুরসহ রমজান মাসের সব নিত্যপণ্যের দাম আগামী সাতদিনের মধ্যে কমে আসবে বলে আশা প্রকাশ করেছেন বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা শেখ বশিরউদ্দীন। সাভারের হেমায়েতপুরের হরিণধরা এলাকায় গতকাল বিসিক চামড়া শিল্পনগরীর কেন্দ্রীয় বর্জ্য শোধনাগারসহ (সিইটিপি) বিভিন্ন স্থাপনা পরিদর্শনকালে তিনি সাংবাদিকদের এ কথা বলেন। এ সময় বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা ট্যানারি মালিকদের সঙ্গে একটি বৈঠকেও অংশ নেন। শেখ বশিরউদ্দীন বলেন, ‘‌এবারের রমজানে বাজারে কোনো খাদ্য ঘাটতির সম্ভাবনা নেই। সাতদিনের মধ্যে খেজুরসহ সব জিনিসপত্রের দাম কমে আসবে এবং সাধারণ মানুষের নাগালের মধ্যে আসবে।’ তিনি বলেন, ‘‌এবারের রমজানে সবকিছুই মজুদ রয়েছে। আশা করি বাজারকেন্দ্রিক কোনো সমস্যা হবে না।’ বৈঠকে বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা ট্যানারি মালিকদের পরিবেশ দূষণ থেকে রক্ষায় সব ধরনের পদক্ষেপ নেয়ার জন্য নির্দেশনা দেন। এ সময় বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়ের সচিব, কর্মকর্তা ও ট্যানারি মালিকরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

The energy division has requested the government to earmark Tk 22.25 billion in the next fiscal year for drilling wells to enhance gas and oil production, conducting seismic surveys, and exploring mineral resources, officials have said. Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam in a recent letter to Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder made the plea. Finance Division officials say they are now scrutinizing the proposal based on the necessity of the projects. A senior official of the division told The Financial Express, "The government is now facing a severe shortage of development funds. Allocating additional funds in the next fiscal year will be very tough."

The central bank's liquidity-sterilization instrument, called Bangladesh Bank (BB) bills, has failed to attract commercial banks' attention, leaving the regulator's move to mop up high-powered money in doubt, officials and bankers have said. They said commercial banks mostly borrowed money from the central bank amid persistent liquidity tightness at policy rate (now 10 per cent) and invested in government securities - treasury bills and bonds. In fact, the banking regulator allows the cut-off yield on BB bills around that on 91-day treasury bills, which dropped substantially in recent weeks to reach 10.35 per cent after the latest auctions held on February 23.

Bangladesh scales back its big-dream plan to establish 100 economic zones across the country by 2030 and the current government prioritizes five full-blown EZs to deliver the desired goods. It now focuses on select few zones "to maximize the attraction of foreign investment and impact on the country's economy", according to a top government official. Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) planned to create 100 special economic zones across the country to promote economic growth and employment by 2030, according to a report published by fdi intelligence in its February-March issue. Once completed, these EZs were envisaged to create 10 million jobs and provide a manufacturing base for US$40 billion worth of exports.

Sri Lanka's earnings from tourism improved to an estimated 401 million US dollars in January 2025, with arrivals recording the highest monthly level for any of January in the past, according to the country's Central Bank. The Central Bank said in a press release issued on Friday night that 252,761 tourist arrivals were recorded in January, reports Xinhua. Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe said earlier that Sri Lanka targets 3 million tourist arrivals this year.
