The sharp increase in public debt has become a matter of concern worldwide for the last few years, and different international organizations have already raised red flags in this regard. Last month, the World Economic Forum (WEF) released its 'Chief Economists Outlook'. It showed that most of the chief economists surveyed for the report believed that public debt threatens macroeconomic stability in both advanced and developing economies. Moreover, almost two-fifths of chief economists expected developing economies to face higher debt default next year.

Net sales of savings instruments in July-August of fiscal year 2024-25 experienced a substantial decline of 24.07 per cent compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The net sales of the savings instruments in July-August FY 25 stood at Tk 42.23 billion, Bangladesh Bank (BB) data showed. Such sales of saving certificates reached Tk 55.62 billion in July-August FY 24, according to the data.On the other hand, such sales of saving tools declined by 6.70 per cent in August this year. Such sales of saving tools stood at Tk 20.36 billion in August this year whereas it stood at Tk 21.87 billion in July this year, the BB data said.

Release of funds for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), working in the country and are administered through the government regulator - NGO Affairs Bureau (NGOAB), has been showing a declining trend in the recent years. The price of onions jumped to maximum Tk 150 per a kilogramme on Saturday, marking a hike of Tk 10 per kg overnight. Price of the local spice witnessed a Tk 20-30 a kg hike in last three days, said groceries. Imported onion price surged to Tk 130 a kg marking 15-20 a kg further hike in three days. Traders attributed the hike to higher import cost and a depleting stock of local crops.

Large-scale manufacturing in Bangladesh contracted by 9.75 per cent year on year in June, according to the latest data available with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. This decline marks the first negative growth in months following a positive growth rate of 9.56 per cent in May 2024.This is significant enough to have implications on GDP (gross domestic product).The quantum index for large-scale manufacturing (LSM) was 209.69 points in June compared to 194.52 points in the corresponding month last year. The Planning Commission (PC) has turned down a fresh and costly railway workshop-construction project as it finds two other existing ones underutilized, officials said on Friday. Six priority areas are up for reforms under conditions binding a World Bank-offered budget-support credit, including an overhaul in fiscal, revenue, and public-welfare arenas, officials said. The World Bank is providing the development-policy credit under its Building Economic and Institutional Resilience programme for tidying these areas of finance. The Ministry of Finance has formed a policy actions-implementation committee headed by an additional secretary of the finance division to push through the reforms.

বাংলাদেশের বৈদেশিক ঋণের সুদ পরিশোধের পরিমাণ গত তিন বছরে প্রায় তিনগুণ বেড়ে আকাশচুম্বী হয়েছে। পাশাপাশি দেশে বৈদেশিক ঋণপ্রবাহ কমে গিয়েছে। একই সময়ে ঋণের আসল পরিশোধের পরিমাণও বেড়েছে, যদিও এ বৃদ্ধি ৩২ শতাংশে সীমিত ছিল। এ ঋণ-চাপের বড় কারণ হিসেবে দেশের ঋণ গ্রহণের নীতিতে পরিবর্তনকে চিহ্নিত করা হচ্ছে। আগের মতো সহজলভ্য না থাকায় স্বল্প সুদের রেয়াতি ঋণ থেকে সরে এসে বাংলাদেশ এখন বাজারভিত্তিক ঋণের ওপর বেশি নির্ভর করতে বাধ্য হচ্ছে। রেয়াতি ঋণের সুদের হার সাধারণত ২ শতাংশ বা তার কম থাকে।
