যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ট ট্রাম্পের শুল্ক নীতির কারণে বিকল্প বিনিয়োগ গন্তব্য হিসেবে বাংলাদেশকে বেছে নিতে পারেন চীনা ব্যবসায়ীরা। আর এই সুযোগকে কাজে লাগাতে দেশটির জন্য দেওয়া চীনা অর্থনৈতিক ও শিল্পাঞ্চল তৈরির কাজ দ্রুত শেষ করতে চাইছে বাংলাদেশ অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল কর্তৃপক্ষ (বেজা)। ২০১৬ সাল থেকে চট্টগ্রামের আনোয়ারা উপজেলায় ৭৮৩ একর জমিতে তৈরি হচ্ছে চীনা অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল (সিইআইজেড)। ওই বছর চীনের প্রেসিডেন্ট শি জিনপিং বাংলাদেশ সফরে এলে জি-টু-জি ভিত্তিক চুক্তির অংশ হিসেবে এর ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করা হয়। পরে ২০২২ সালে সিইআইজেডের নির্মাণ কাজ গতিশীল করতে নতুন উন্নয়নকারী হিসেবে চায়না রোড অ্যান্ড ব্রিজ করপোরেশনকে নিয়োগ দেয় চীন। দীর্ঘদিন থমকে থাকার পর এবার গতি পাচ্ছে এর কাজ। প্রধান উপদেষ্টার চীন সফরে, এ বিষয়ক অনানুষ্ঠানিক কথা হতে পারে বলে জানিয়েছেন বেজা সূত্র।

Government bank borrowings may be costlier from this fiscal year's last quarter for growing yields on sovereign securities, as rate rises already cast their shadows before. Economists and bankers believe the yield pressures may be zooming despite the borrowing target for the April-June period is not set to increase significantly. On Tuesday, the government released its auction calendar for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25 with a plan to borrow Tk 1.42 trillion through the banking system -- an increase of nearly 8.0 per cent. The country's banks typically rely on repo borrowing to meet urgent liquidity needs and fund their investments in government securities. But, the central bank has announced discontinuation of the 28-day repo facility from April 10. Bankers argue that soon after issuance of the circular, yields on both treasury bills and bonds reflected an uptrend in last auctions held Sunday and Tuesday this week. The cut-off yield on the 15-year Bangladesh Government Treasury Bond (BGTB) rose to 12.28 per cent from 11.36 percent, while on the 20-year BGTB increased to 12.54 per cent from 12.05 per cent, according to auction results.

International Monetary Fund staff reached a deal with Pakistan for a new $1.3 billion arrangement and also agreed on the first review of the ongoing 37-month bailout program, the IMF said on Tuesday. Pending board approval, Pakistan can unlock the $1.3 billion under a new climate resilience loan program spanning 28 months. It will also free $1 billion for the South Asian nation under its $7 billion bailout program, which would bring those disbursements to $2 billion. The programme, secured mid-year in 2024, has played a key role in stabilising Pakistan's economy and the government has said the country is on course for a long-term recovery. "Over the past 18 months, Pakistan has made significant progress in restoring macroeconomic stability and rebuilding confidence despite a challenging global environment," the IMF said in a statement. "Upon approval (by the IMF board), Pakistan will have access to about $1 billion under the EFF, bringing total disbursements under the program to about $2 billion," the IMF said.

Political parties, which have enjoyed tax exemptions for years, are likely to come under the tax net from next fiscal year, according to sources at the National Board of Revenue (NBR). "A large part of their recommendations may be implemented in the next budget. As part of this, there is a plan to remove tax exemptions for political parties." However, the official said the final decision on these matters will be made by the financial adviser and the chief adviser. The task force's recommendations, a copy of which was seen by TBS, state that the unconditional exemption of political party income has undermined accountability, enabling money laundering, black money legalisation, and fostering allegations of corruption. Experts view the government initiative as positive, noting that for years, political parties' income and expenditure accounts have been opaque, with the figures submitted to the Election Commission bearing little relation to reality.
