Upgrading Bangladesh's export-earning apparel industry happens at a cost as automation of the production processes eliminates 30.58-percent jobs, with helpers handed higher cuts, a latest study shows. The cutting section of the garment-making experienced the highest percentage of labour wipeout-48.34 per cent--while the sewing process showed a lower reduction of 26.57 per cent. It also reveals that automation has posed significant challenges to readymade garment (RMG) workers, particularly women, the aged, less literate, unskilled and low-confident ones, notwithstanding its several positive impacts on economic growth and overall productivity. The study, titled 'Assessment of Technological Transition in the Apparel Sector of Bangladesh and Its Impact on Workers', also found sweater factories witnessing the highest percentage of worker decline, with a 37.03-percent reduction per production line. Private-sector insurance business, both life and non-life, grew at a slower pace in 2023 due to higher inflation and subdued overall business activities. The life-insurance sector expanded by 8.2 per cent to about Tk 114.84 billion, but the growth rate was more than 2.0-percentage-point lower compared to 2022, according to the annual report of the Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) that represents private insurers in Bangladesh. The non-life insurance sector recorded a modest growth of 1.74 per cent to Tk 42.351 billion in 2023. This reflects a decline of 8.56 percentage points compared to the growth rate of 2022, as stated in the report published last week. A substantial sum of US$900 million is being fed into Bangladesh's slim foreign-exchange purse from the World Bank as two loan deals were made Sunday, in a row of recent foreign funding. Of the funds, $500 million comes as budget support and another $400 million for implementing resilient urban and territorial development project (RUTDP) by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of Economic Relations Division (ERD), signed the loan agreement for budget support and Farid Aziz, Additional Secretary of the ERD, inked the document on RUTDP project on behalf of the Bangladesh government.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) would purchase 66 million litres of edible oils from the local suppliers to sell at subsidised rates among 10 million low-income card-holder families, sources said. It would also buy 10,000 tonnes of sugar and 10,000 tonnes of lentils from domestic sources. The state trading agency has already floated tenders to procure the essential commodities. It will procure 22 million litres of soybean oil, 11 million litres of rice bran oil, 22 million litres of palm oil and 11 million litres of sunflower oil. The TCB is currently conducting its sales drive of items like soybean, lentil, and sugar. Moreover, it sells chickpeas and dates at reasonable rates during the holy month of Ramadan while onion and potato during lean periods or to meet emergency needs.

Experts at a workshop held recently put emphasis on the need for evidence-based policies that prioritize regional demands, improve governance in subsidy distribution, and create a supportive environment for local industries. The revenue reform advisory committee has finalised the outline of a proposal to separate policy formulation responsibilities of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) from revenue collection. According to relevant sources, the committee has finalised the decision to shift the policy formulation responsibilities to the entity named Independent Policy Commission.The policy commission will not be placed under the Internal Resources Division due to protest from NBR officials, said sources familiar with the matter. They, however, could not confirm whether the commission will remain under the control of the NBR.
