Japanese companies in Bangladesh are hopeful about expanding their businesses this year though operating profit forecast by them for the last year dropped significantly among Asia and Oceania countries, according to an annual survey. The Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) 2024 survey, conducted across 20 Asia and Oceania countries found that while the number of profitable Japanese companies increased in ASEAN countries and India, it remained low in Bangladesh. The survey conducted in between August 20 and September 18 just after the country's changed political scenario found that 41.9 per cent Japanese companies in Bangladesh expect to make a profit in 2024 which is second-lowest rate in the region after Myanmar. According to JETRO survey, though the Diffusion Index (DI) of Bangladesh dropped to 6.6 from 41.8 in 2024, it is expected to rebound to 43.5 in 2025. Bangladesh ranked fifth in the whole region and its score is the lowest in South Asia. The 2024 business confidence DI stood at 11.1 points. "The percentage of companies intending to expand in Bangladesh has always remained among the highest in the region for the last 15 years, along with India," the survey noted.

The government has taken an initiative to review the minimum monthly wages for workers in the glass and silicate industry, in accordance with the Labour Act. The last wage review for this sector was held in 2019. At that time, the minimum wage for workers in the sector was set at Tk 8,500, an increase from Tk 5,000 in 2011, officials said. On March 16, the Labour Ministry issued a gazette notification announcing the appointment of representatives from both workers and employers to the wage board. Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) president Taskeen Ahmed said on Saturday that the adoption of 'International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS)' could help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) gain easy access to finance, investment and capacity development. Mentioning SMEs as a lifeline for Bangladesh's economy that are contributing over 25 per cent to the country's GDP, he said the adoption of IFRS for SMEs provides a structured framework that enhances financial transparency. Mr Ahmed made the observations at a focus group discussion on "Implementation of IFRS for SMEs" held at the trade body's Motijheel office in the capital. He also said that IFRS will significantly impact tax revenue collection by improving compliance, minimising tax evasion and bringing more businesses into tax net.The DCCI president also termed that limited financial capacity, shortages of skilled manpower and compliance cost creates barrier to adopting IFRS for SMEs. He, however, stressed the need for investment in training and regulatory alignment. Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf, chairman (acting) of the Financial Reporting Council, said IFRS is very important for SMEs to comply with the international standards, but its implementation is still challenging for SMEs due to lack of knowledge, skilled workforce, easy procedures and awareness.

Country's large-scale manufacturing sector recorded a double-digit growth of 10.37 per cent in December last year, rising from the same period in 2023, according to data released last week by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). Large-scale manufacturing contributes over 11 per cent to the country's GDP and serves as a key indicator of industrial performance. The quantum index of large manufacturing industries reached 246.58 points in December 2024, up from 223.42 in December 2023. Of the 23 manufacturing subsectors, 14 posted growth, while seven saw declines. Sectors that contracted during the months included tobacco products, textiles, leather, chemicals, paper, computer-related industries, and "other manufacturing" sectors. However, the large industries registered sluggish growth earlier in the current fiscal year (FY 2024-25), with the index rising by only 3.85 per cent in July-September quarter (Q1).

Government's revenue plans to eliminate the provision of legalization of undisclosed money in the national budget for the next fiscal year, as it has long been criticized as washing 'black money white'. National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Abdur Rahman Khan disclosed the plan Saturday at a media meet on the looks of the budget in the making after a regime change. However, he said if full abolition is not feasible, the penalty rate on undeclared money, particularly in the housing sector, would be increased to a level that ensures a higher tax burden than that of regular taxpayers.The NBR chairman made the remarks at a seminar titled "Domestic Revenue Mobilization" jointly arranged by the Economic Reporters' Forum (ERF) and the Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID) at the ERF auditorium in the capital. He also said at the event that a "highly aggressive tax structure" has been introduced over the decades to align with ambitious national budgets, yet weaknesses in implementation persist. He mentions that many businesspeople argue that tax rates across various sectors are excessively high, with claims that this is also deterring foreign investment. "The NBR will try to liberalize tax policy in future with increased effort on implementation to boost revenue mobilisation," he told the meet.

Bangladesh's state-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) has floated one fresh tender and re-issued one to purchase two spot LNG cargoes respectively for April 23-24 and April 14-15 delivery windows. Earlier, it awarded two spot LNG tenders for early April delivery windows. The bid winners will deliver the cargoes at either of the country's two floating storage re-gasification units (FSRUs), located on Moheshkhali island. The RPGCL reissued a tender for April 14-15 delivery as it did not find a suitable offer, said a senior RPGCL official. The RPGCL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run Bangladesh Oil, Gas, and Mineral Corporation, or Petrobangla, looks into LNG trades in Bangladesh. The volume of the spot LNG cargoes will be around 3.36 million MMBtu each. Bangladesh bought four spot LNG cargoes for March delivery windows, which is the highest purchase of LNG from the spot market in a month.

The interim government's removal of the 5% VAT on packaged goods at supermarkets, effective 21 February, has led to a 20% increase in footfall at major chains, according to industry insiders. দেশের বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা আয়ের প্রধান দুই উৎস রেমিট্যান্স ও রফতানি আয়। চলতি অর্থবছরে এ দুই খাতেই বড় ধরনের প্রবৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে বাংলাদেশ। এর মধ্যে রেমিট্যান্সে প্রবৃদ্ধি হয়েছে প্রায় ২৭ শতাংশ। আর ১০ শতাংশ প্রবৃদ্ধি হয়েছে রফতানি আয়ে। বৈদেশিক মুদ্রার প্রধান এ দুই উৎসের উচ্চ প্রবৃদ্ধিতেও রিজার্ভ বাড়ছে না দেশে। আট মাস ধরে রিজার্ভের পরিমাণ ওঠানামা করছে ১৯ থেকে ২১ বিলিয়ন ডলারের ঘরে। আন্তর্জাতিক মানদণ্ড বিপিএম৬ পদ্ধতির হিসাব অনুযায়ী, গত ১৩ মার্চ দেশের রিজার্ভের পরিমাণ ছিল ১ হাজার ৯৭৩ কোটি বা ১৯ দশমিক ৭৩ বিলিয়ন ডলার। যদিও চলতি অর্থবছরের শুরুতে অর্থাৎ ২০২৪ সালের ১ জুলাই রিজার্ভের পরিমাণ ২১ দশমিক ৬৮ বিলিয়ন ডলার ছিল। সে হিসাবে গত আট মাসে রিজার্ভ না বেড়ে উল্টো ১ দশমিক ৯৫ বিলিয়ন ডলার কমেছে। যদিও এ সময়ে বাংলাদেশে রেমিট্যান্স ও রফতানি আয় এসেছে আগের অর্থবছরের একই সময়ের তুলনায় ৬ দশমিক ৭৯ বিলিয়ন ডলার বেশি। এর মধ্যে গত অর্থবছরের তুলনায় রেমিট্যান্স বেশি এসেছে ৪ দশমিক ৪০ বিলিয়ন ডলার। আর রফতানি আয় বেশি এসেছে ২ দশমিক ৩৯ বিলিয়ন ডলার।

বিদ্যুৎ খাতের তালিকাভুক্ত কোম্পানি সামিট পাওয়ার লিমিটেডের চলতি ২০২৪-২৫ হিসাব বছরের প্রথমার্ধে (জুলাই-ডিসেম্বর) ২৪৮ কোটি টাকা কর-পরবর্তী নিট মুনাফা হয়েছে, আগের হিসাব বছরের একই সময়ে যা ছিল ৩০৬ কোটি টাকা। এক বছরের ব্যবধানে কোম্পানিটির নিট মুনাফা কমেছে ১৯ শতাংশ। সম্প্রতি কোম্পানিটির প্রকাশিত চলতি হিসাব বছরের দ্বিতীয় প্রান্তিকের (অক্টোবর-ডিসেম্বর) অনিরীক্ষিত আর্থিক প্রতিবেদনে এ তথ্য উঠে এসেছে। আর্থিক প্রতিবেদন অনুসারে, চলতি ২০২৪-২৫ হিসাব বছরের প্রথমার্ধে সামিট পাওয়ারের আয় হয়েছে ২ হাজার ৪৪৬ কোটি টাকা, আগের হিসাব বছরের একই সময়ে যা ছিল ২ হাজার ২১০ কোটি টাকা। এ সময়ের ব্যবধানে কোম্পানিটির আয় বেড়েছে প্রায় ১১ শতাংশ। প্রথমার্ধে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ারপ্রতি আয় (ইপিএস) হয়েছে ১ টাকা ৭ পয়সা, আগের হিসাব বছরের একই সময়ে যা ছিল ১ টাকা ৭১ পয়সা।

দেশের পুঁজিবাজারে ব্লক মার্কেটে গত সপ্তাহে ১১০ কোটি ৬৯ লাখ টাকার শেয়ার ও ইউনিট লেনদেন হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে শীর্ষ ১০ কোম্পানির লেনদেনের পরিমাণ ছিল ৮৬ কোটি ৬১ লাখ টাকা। ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জ (ডিএসই) সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। গত সপ্তাহে ডিএসইর ব্লক মার্কেটে সবচেয়ে বেশি লেনদেন হওয়া কোম্পানিগুলো হচ্ছে ম্যারিকো বাংলাদেশ, ‌এক্সপ্রেস ইন্স্যুরেন্স, ব্যাংক এশিয়া, বিচ হ্যাচারি, উত্তরা ব্যাংক, খান ব্রাদার্স পিপি ওভেন ব্যাগ ইন্ডাস্ট্রিজ, আল-হাজ টেক্সটাইল, ফাইন ফুডস, বীকন ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালস ও স্কয়ার ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালস।

দেশের পুঁজিবাজারে গত সপ্তাহে টেলিযোগাযোগ খাতের তালিকাভুক্ত কোম্পানি রবি আজিয়াটা লিমিটেডের শেয়ারদর কমেছে ৭ দশমিক ৪৭ শতাংশ। এতে শেয়ারটি সাপ্তাহিক দরপতনের শীর্ষ তালিকায় উঠে এসেছে। সপ্তাহজুড়ে শেয়ারটির দর ২৬ টাকা থেকে ২৮ টাকা ১০ পয়সার মধ্যে ওঠানামা করেছে। ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জ (ডিএসই) সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। সর্বশেষ সমাপ্ত ২০২৪ হিসাব বছরে বিনিয়োগকারীদের জন্য ১৫ শতাংশ নগদ লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা করেছে রবি আজিয়াটার পর্ষদ। আলোচ্য হিসাব বছরে কোম্পানিটির আয় হয়েছে ৯ হাজার ৯৫০ কোটি টাকা, আগের হিসাব বছরে যা ছিল ৯ হাজার ৯৪২ কোটি টাকা। এ সময়ে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ারপ্রতি সমন্বিত আয় (ইপিএস) হয়েছে ১ টাকা ৩৪ পয়সা, আগের হিসাব বছরে যা ছিল ৬১ পয়সা।

১ এপ্রিল থেকে পেঁয়াজ রপ্তানির উপর ২০ শতাংশ শুল্ক প্রত্যাহার করবে ভারত। শনিবার ভারত সরকারের রাজস্ব বিভাগ এই বিষয়ে একটি বিজ্ঞপ্তি জারি করেছে। দেশীয়ভাবে পেঁয়াজের প্রাপ্যতা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য ন্যূনতম রপ্তানি মূল্য এবং সরাসরি নিষেধাজ্ঞাসহ প্রায় পাঁচ মাস ধরে রপ্তানি বিধিনিষেধ আরোপের পর এই পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হয়েছে। ২০ শতাংশ রপ্তানি শুল্ক ২০২৪ সালের ১৩ সেপ্টেম্বর থেকে কার্যকর ছিল।
