The closed Kazipara metro rail station will resume operations from tomorrow (20 September). Mohammad Abdur Rouf, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) provided this information today (19 September). "The Kazipara Station will open from tomorrow. A total of Tk20.5 lakh has been spent to make it operational. However, it's being opened quickly with the convenience of people in mind. There are still many pieces of equipment needed, which will be fixed gradually, and costs may increase then."

The High Court has directed Bangladesh Bank to appoint a receiver for the maintenance of all properties of Beximco Group, which is owned by Salman F Rahman. In the order issued by the court yesterday (18 September) it also asked the Bangladesh Bank to repatriate money allegedly laundered by Salman F Rahman. Bangladesh Bank has been instructed to submit a report to the court within four weeks regarding the implementation of the order.

A major policy shift comes in Bangladesh's development paradigm as the interim government suspended the ongoing 8th five-year plan (FYP) to prioritise human-resource development to end reliance on foreign hands. The government is also going to empower the ministries to approve projects ensuring priority needs and checking misuse of funds, Planning Adviser Prof Wahiduddin Mahmud said Wednesday. "At this moment, we (interim govt) are putting the FYP on hold. We will favour the human resources-development and the foreign aid-supported projects to get preference," the Planning and Education Adviser said about their government decision.

The gas resource in Bhola is not equivalent to 5.109 trillion cubic feet (tcf) as reported earlier but 2tcf, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources clarified today (19 September). Adviser of Electricity, Energy and Mineral Resources Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan disclosed the matter at a press briefing following a meeting with relevant departments and experts regarding media reports of 5.109tcf gas being identified in Bhola. "If this information [5.109tcf gas resource] was correct, we would be celebrating today. There would not be any gas crisis anymore. We would not need to import gas," said Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan.

Major fertiliser suppliers across the world have stopped their shipments to Bangladesh and canceled scheduled consignments due to the non-payment of outstanding import bills in time, according to sources.The government owes the suppliers of China, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Morocco a sum total of $80 million in bills, including shipping rent, they say.The issue of further freight has also become uncertain due to non-payment of dues against fertiliser imports, reads an agriculture ministry document.

রাজধানীর দ্বিতীয় দ্রুতগতির উড়াল সড়ক ঢাকা-আশুলিয়া এলিভেটেড এক্সপ্রেসওয়ে। ২৪ কিলোমিটার দীর্ঘ উড়াল সড়কটির নির্মাণ ব্যয় ১৭ হাজার ৫৫৩ কোটি টাকা। চীনের ঋণে প্রকল্পটি বাস্তবায়ন করা হচ্ছে জিটুজি পদ্ধতিতে। অন্যান্য জিটুজি প্রকল্পের মতো এটিতেও ঠিকাদার নিয়োগে কোনো দরপত্র প্রক্রিয়া অনুসরণ করা হয়নি। চীন ও বাংলাদেশের সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষ সমঝোতার ভিত্তিতে ঠিকাদার হিসেবে চীনের ন্যাশনাল মেশিনারি করপোরেশনকে (সিএমসি) নিযুক্ত করেছে। জিটুজি পদ্ধতিতে এভাবে ঠিকাদার নিয়োগ না করে তা প্রতিযোগিতামূলক দরপত্রের মাধ্যমে সম্পন্ন করা হলে এলিভেটেড এক্সপ্রেসওয়ের নির্মাণ ব্যয় অনেকটাই কমে যেত বলে মনে করছেন যোগাযোগ অবকাঠামো বিশেষজ্ঞরা। তারা বলছেন, পিপিপি (সরকারি-বেসরকারি অংশীদারত্ব) পদ্ধতিতে সমজাতীয় ও প্রায় সমান দৈর্ঘ্যের ঢাকা এলিভেটেড এক্সপ্রেসওয়ে প্রকল্প বাস্তবায়নে ব্যয় হচ্ছে ৮ হাজার ৯৪০ কোটি টাকা। অথচ ঢাকা-আশুলিয়া এলিভেটেড এক্সপ্রেসওয়ে প্রকল্পে অর্থ ব্যয় হচ্ছে এর প্রায় দ্বিগুণ।

The World Bank could provide a total of $2 billion in support to Bangladesh in the current fiscal year 2024-2025, which would include budget support and project assistance, said Martin Raiser, vice president for South Asia at the World Bank "The final decision on the loan is made during the World Bank's board meeting. However, the possibility of providing $2 billion in assistance for the current fiscal year is being examined," said Martin Raiser today after a meeting with Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed. "Some of this amount will be given as budget support, while the rest will be allocated to various important projects in the health and energy sectors. Additionally, further support will be provided for other projects based on the needs of the Bangladesh government," he added.
