বিশ্বব্যাংকের দক্ষিণ এশিয়া অঞ্চলের ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট মার্টিন রাইসার আজ বুধবার (১৮ সেপ্টেম্বর) ঢাকা সফরে আসছেন। বিশ্বব্যাংকের ঢাকা অফিস থেকে পাঠানো এক সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ কথা জানানো হয়েছে। দু’দিনের সফরে রাইসার প্রধান উপদেষ্টা অধ্যাপক ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস এবং অর্থ উপদেষ্টা, জ্বালানি উপদেষ্টা, বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্নর এবং অন্যান্য ঊর্ধ্বতন সরকারি কর্মকর্তাদের সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করবেন বলে বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে বলা হয়েছে। স্বাধীনতার পর বাংলাদেশকে সহায়তাকারী প্রথম উন্নয়ন সহযোগীদের মধ্যে রয়েছে বিশ্বব্যাংক। বাংলাদেশে বর্তমানে বিশ্বব্যাংক গ্রুপের ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ডেভেলপমেন্ট অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের (আইডিএ) সহায়তাপুষ্ট বৃহত্তম কর্মসূচি চলমান রয়েছে।

Metro rail operations remained suspended on the Agargaon-Motijheel section of metro rail in Dhaka since 9:40 am on Wednesday due to a ‘technical glitch’. In a Facebook post, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited said the metro rail remains operational in another section, Uttara North to Agargaon route. DMTCL’s Managing Director Mohammad Abdur Rouf told FE that they have initiated efforts to restore metro rail operations on the Agargaon-Motijheel route before the end of office hours today.

The white paper preparation committee on Tuesday said they indentified that the data and statistics available with the government were very weak. "In many cases, the civil servants involved in the data estimation and publication were helpless or being forced to provide weak and non-credible statistics," Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, chief of the committee, told journalists.

Eggs and chickens are not available at government-fixed rates as both items have become a bit expensive even after the introduction of their maximum retail prices (MRPs), market sources say. The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in alignment with the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) set prices of eggs, Sonali and broiler chickens at producer, wholesale and retail levels on Sunday. The FE visited three markets in the capital on Tuesday and found broiler chicken and eggs still selling above government-fixed prices.

On the occasion of World Ozone Day 2024, IPDC Finance PLC is partnering with Truvalu Bangladesh to facilitate green financing for SMEs under the "Access to Green Financing (A2GF) for Enterprises” programme implemented jointly by Truvalu, One to Watch and United Nations Capital Development Fund and supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh. According to a press release, the A2GF programme aims to promote green and sustainable finance solutions for SMEs to support sustainable development and green initiatives.

Transformer producers in the country have urged the government to establish a special fund to address their financial difficulties, sources said. They have also requested a 10-year loan rescheduling facility. In a letter, Bangladesh Manufacturers' Association of Transformers and Switchgears (BMATS) has recently appealed to the finance adviser for necessary action on this matter. BMATS is the national association representing transformer and switchgear manufacturers, whose member firms play a crucial role in the country's power generation, transmission, distribution, and protection sectors.

The traffic division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) filed 292 cases and imposed a fine of Tk 1.15 million (11.58 lakh) after conducting drives against traffic rule violators on Tuesday. Faruque Hossain, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP, said this in a media release on Wednesday. Thirty-nine vehicles were dumped and 15 others were towed. Some 4, 000 traffic personnel have been working at 339 points in Dhaka to maintain discipline in traffic movement.

Activities at Teknaf Land Port of Cox's Bazar have come to a halt as bullets from conflict-torn Myanmar have hit infrastructures and trees at the port. Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Adnan Chowdhury confirmed the matter saying that the activities have been suspended following the firing. Jasim Uddin, manager of the land port, said three bullets from the Myanmar border fell on Teknaf land port around 1:30pm.

Facing public backlash over the partial withdrawal of the black money whitening scheme earlier this month, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) is now reportedly planning to remove the option to legalise black money through real estate (land or apartments) purchases. According to NBR sources, the only facility likely to stay the same is for undisclosed money, which would be taxed at the standard rate (up to 25%) plus a 10% penalty. Moreover, the NBR plans to remove the special provision that protects investors from inquiries about the source of their money, sources said.

ডলারসহ অর্থনৈতিক সংকটের প্রভাবে মূল্যস্ফীতি উসকে ওঠা দেশগুলোর একটি ছিল শ্রীলংকা। দুই বছর আগে ২০২২ সালের সেপ্টেম্বরে দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার দ্বীপরাষ্ট্রটির মূল্যস্ফীতির হার ঠেকে ৭০ শতাংশে। বৈদেশিক দায় পরিশোধে ব্যর্থতায় নিজেদের দেউলিয়া ঘোষণা করা দেশটির মূল্যস্ফীতি এখন ১ শতাংশেরও নিচে। গত আগস্টে দেশটিতে মূল্যস্ফীতির হার ছিল দশমিক ৫ শতাংশ। দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার দেশগুলোর মধ্যে পাকিস্তানে মূল্যস্ফীতির হার দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই ছিল দুই অংকের ঘরে। অর্থনৈতিক সংকটে হাবুডুবু খাওয়া দেশটির মূল্যস্ফীতির হারও এরই মধ্যে এক অংকের ঘরে নেমে এসেছে। গত মাসে দেশটিতে মূল্যস্ফীতি ছিল ৯ দশমিক ৬৪ শতাংশ। যদিও এক বছর আগে ২০২৩ সালের আগস্টে দেশটিতে মূল্যস্ফীতি ছিল ২৭ শতাংশেরও বেশি।

World Bank's funding to Bangladesh this fiscal year is going to be ramped up by over US$2 billion to assist the reform agenda of the post-uprising interim government. The commitment of the lending package came from WB Country Director Abdoulaye Seck when he called on Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka on Tuesday, said a spokesperson for the CA after comprehensive exchanges between the two.

This stark finding is part of a broader analysis showing that 2 billion people globally experienced at least 30 days of "risky heat" this summer, with fossil fuel burning and human activities being the primary drivers.

The American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), the US national trade association representing apparel, footwear and other sewn products companies, and the Fair Labor association (FLA), a US non-profit organisation, have urged the interim government of Bangladesh to immediately release those arrested during the fall 2023 protests over minimum wage. They also called for the removal of all criminal charges against those arrested over minimum wage protests at the time.

Bangladesh's interim government has approached the UK to help probe the overseas wealth of allies of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as it investigates whether Hasina's regime diverted around $17 billion overseas from the country's banking system. In particular, the focus is on identifying the source of funds used to pay for a UK property portfolio worth £150mn owned by former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury.

রপ্তানি বাণিজ্যের আড়ালে মানিলন্ডারিং এর মাধ্যমে ৮৩ মিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার (প্রায় ১০০০ কোটি টাকা) বিদেশে পাচারের অভিযোগে বেক্সিমকো গ্রুপের কর্ণধার সালমান এফ রহমান সহ ২৮ জনের বিরুদ্ধে ১৭টি মামলা করেছে সিআইডি। মানিলন্ডারিং প্রতিরোধ আইনের অধীনে পরিচালিত সিআইডির তদন্তে দেখা গেছে, সালমান এবং তার ভাই এএসএফ রহমান (বেক্সিমকো গ্রুপের চেয়ারম্যান) ২০২১ থেকে ২০২৪ সালের মধ্যে জনতা ব্যাংক থেকে ৯৩টি এলসির বিপরীতে রপ্তানি পণ্যের মাধ্যমে প্রায় ১ হাজার কোটি টাকা (৮৩ মিলিয়ন ডলার) পাচারে জড়িত ছিলেন। তবে রপ্তানি আয় বাংলাদেশে ফেরত আনা হয়নি।

ঢাকার আশুলিয়া শিল্পাঞ্চলে গত কয়েকদিনের ধারাবাহিকতায় আজও অধিকাংশ পোশাক কারখানা খোলা রয়েছে, শান্তিপূর্ণভাবে কাজ করছেন শ্রমিকরা। এ অঞ্চলে ২০টি কারখানা এখনো বাংলাদেশ শ্রম আইন ২০০৬ এর ১৩(১) ধারায় বন্ধ রয়েছে। এছাড়াও সাধারণ ছুটি রয়েছে ৫টি কারখানায়।এসব কারখানার অধিকাংশ শ্রমিক অসন্তোষ চলাকালীন গত সপ্তাহের বিভিন্ন সময় বন্ধ ঘোষণা করা যা পরবর্তী সময়ে আর খোলা হয়নি। শিল্প পুলিশ-১ এর পুলিশ সুপার মো. সারোয়ার আলম বলেন, ‘শ্রম আইনের ১৩ (১) ধারায় ২০টি এবং ৫টি কারখানায় সাধারণ ছুটি রয়েছে। শিল্পাঞ্চলের সার্বিক পরিস্থিতি স্বাভাবিক রয়েছে। শিল্পাঞ্চলের নিরাপত্তায় বিভিন্ন কারখানার সামনে আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর সদস্যরা মোতায়েন থাকা ছাড়াও অব্যাহত আছে যৌথ বাহিনীর টহল কার্যক্রম।

Government liabilities in import-LC backpay can be cleared over next 5-6 months, aided by remittance rebound that raised Bangladesh's latest foreign-exchange reserves to US$24.30 billion, and fresh aid commitments. Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Ahsan H. Mansur assures and urges the corresponding foreign banks to keep faith in the country's commercial banks as overall macroeconomic situation, reserves of foreign currencies in particular, continues improving because of various prudent policy steps taken under the interim regime. He held out the assurance Tuesday as there has been a buildup of government liabilities on account of LCs (letter of credit) for import of commodities like fertilisers, power and petroleum products in the wake of forex crunch in the past.
