Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Tuesday emphasised the need for IOM's continued proactive efforts in protecting the rights of Bangladeshi migrant workers in destination and transit countries. He appreciated IOM’s involvement in supporting the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) in Cox’s Bazar, stressing the urgency of their safe and dignified repatriation to Myanmar. The issues were discussed when Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangladesh Abdusattor Esoev paid a farewell call on the foreign adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNB reports.

Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has said Bangladesh is hopeful of getting support from the World Bank (WB) within this year. "We're expecting budget support from the World Bank within this year and this will be finalised and then you will know," he said while talking to the newsmen after a WB delegation led by its Regional Director Mathew A Verghis met him at the Finance Division in the secretariat on Tuesday. He said the WB team has been requested to immediately provide the budget support to carry out the necessary reforms here.

The World Bank is committed to increasing lending to Bangladesh in this fiscal year to help the reform agenda of the Interim Government, its Country Director Abdoulaye Seck said on Tuesday. The country director informed that the World Bank can mobilise about $2.0 billion in new financing in this fiscal year to support critical reforms, flood response, better air quality and health. Mr Seck spoke about the new assistance when he met Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, said a spokesperson of the CA.

The popular mode of public transport, metro rail, will run on Fridays from this week as per the demand of the passengers. "Efforts are underway to run metro rail on weekly holidays from this Friday (September 20) following the decision of the ministry," Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), told news agency BSS on Tuesday.

The foreign exchange reserves have increased and gained stability as the inflow of remittances has increased, the Bangladesh Bank said today (17 September). "Expatriates are sending huge amounts of remittances. This is the major reason for the increase in reserves. This has stopped the decline of reserves," said Husne Ara Shikha, executive director and new spokesperson of the central bank. She said the growth of expatriate income has increased Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves and the central bank also thinks the fall in reserves has stopped.

Stocks opened on a positive note on Tuesday with choppy trading as investors putting funds on selective stocks cautiously. A section of investors are optimistic about the return of good governance in the market as the massive reforms are underway in the financial sectors, including the capital market while some are rebalanced their portfolios ahead of earnings disclosures of June closing companies. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Hoe Yun Jeong as its new Country Director for Bangladesh. Jeong will lead ADB’s operations in Bangladesh and policy dialogue with the interim government, development partners, and other stakeholders. He will initiate the preparation of ADB's upcoming country partnership strategy (CPS) for Bangladesh, said the Manila-based multilateral bank on Tuesday. The current CPS will end in 2025.

Bangladesh’s foreign currency reserves stand at around $20 billion, according to Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Husne Ara Shikha. “According to the latest data, foreign exchange reserves amount to $24.3 billion US dollars. It is close to $20 billion according to the BPM-6 calculation standard of the IMF,” she said in a statement on Tuesday. Net reserves are calculated according to the International Monetary Fund’s BPM-6 measure. Subtracting short-term liabilities from gross or total reserves gives the amount of net or actual reserves.

The government will help the UN fact-finding mission - set to investigate alleged human rights violations during the recent student movement and in its aftermath - if they seek any help as the team will start working soon, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said today (17 September)."They (the UN team) want to avoid publicity as they want to work neutrally. We also want to ensure that they can work impartially. We won't interfere," he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.He also said the UN team had a courtesy meeting with him and conveyed to him that they would soon start their work in Bangladesh.

The blue-chip index DS30, a group of 30 prominent companies, saw a 16.92 point decrease to 2068.61, while the DSES Index, which represents Shariah-based companies, saw an 8.49 point decrease to 1,238.19.

According to the information centre of the National Institute of Ophthalmology, from July 17 to August 31, 611 people were admitted at the hospital with eye injuries. Among them, 28 have lost their sight in both eyes. Another 510 have lost the sight in one eye. Some 177 individuals underwent surgery twice. As of September 12, 46 remain admitted in the specialised dedicated care unit of the hospital. All of them suffered pellet gun injuries

Workers of a garment factory in Gazipur’s Tongi blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on Tuesday morning with a procession demanding due wages. This caused severe traffic jam on both sides of the highway, bringing commute to a standstill, reports UNB. The workers were demanding three months of due wages from the Khapara Season Dress Limited garment factory in Tongi. The procession began from in front of the factory and blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Ershadnagar area.At the time this report was filed (10:15 am), the blockade was ongoing.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected across the country, according to Met Office’s latest weather bulletin on Tuesday.Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions should expect light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, with the possibility of heavy falls in Rajshahi, Khulna, and Chattogram, reports UNB. Monsoon activity is said to be strong over North Bay. Temperatures are expected to rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius across the country, added the bulletin.
