কোটা সংস্কারের দাবিতে শুরু হওয়া ছাত্র আন্দোলন জুলাইয়ে দ্রুত এগোতে থাকে গণ-অভ্যুত্থানের দিকে। এক পর্যায়ে ১৬ বছর ধরে রাখা ক্ষমতা ছাড়তে বাধ্য হয় আওয়ামী লীগ সরকার। এ আন্দোলন চলাকালে শুরু থেকেই জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে চাপে পড়ে গিয়েছিল শেখ হাসিনা সরকার। দ্বিধাদ্বন্দ্ব তৈরি হয়েছিল দেশের প্রধান উন্নয়ন সহযোগী হিসেবে বিবেচিত দেশ ও সংস্থাগুলোর মধ্যেও। এরই প্রভাব পড়েছে জুলাইয়ে বাংলাদেশে আসা বৈদেশিক অর্থায়নের প্রতিশ্রুতিতেও। ওই মাসে বিদেশী সহযোগীদের কাছ থেকে নতুন কোনো অর্থায়নের প্রতিশ্রুতি পায়নি বাংলাদেশ।ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের সাবেক অধ্যাপক ড. আমেনা মহসিন বণিক বার্তাকে বলেন, ‘বিদেশীরা তখন অবস্থা পর্যবেক্ষণ করছিল। অনিশ্চয়তার মধ্যে তারা তাদের নাগরিকদের করের টাকা বিনিয়োগ করেনি। এখন পর্যটনসহ বিভিন্ন খাতে বিদেশী অর্থায়ন বাড়ানোর প্রয়াস নেয়া যেতে পারে। তবে বিদেশী বিনিয়োগ বা অর্থায়ন বাড়াতে হলে দেশে দুর্নীতিকে শূন্যের কোঠায় নামিয়ে আনতে হবে। সাংস্কৃতিক সফট পাওয়ারের দিকে নজর দিতে হবে আমাদের।’ ইআরডির শীর্ষস্থানীয় এক কর্মকর্তা বণিক বার্তাকে বলেন, ‘আমরা বাজেট সহায়তার জন্য এরই মধ্যে এডিবি, বিশ্বব্যাংক ও কোরিয়ার সঙ্গে আলোচনা করেছি। আশা করছি তাদের থেকে দেড় বিলিয়ন ডলার শুধু বাজেট সহায়তা বাবদ পাওয়া যাবে। তাছাড়া চলমান ও নতুন প্রকল্পের অর্থসহায়তা তো রয়েছেই। এগুলো অব্যাহত থাকবে।’

The government has formed a 12-member taskforce to reframe the development strategies, aiming to attain anti-discriminatory sustainable development, reports UNB. The taskforce, titled "Re-strategising the economy and mobilising resources for equitable and sustainable development", will be led by former director general of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Dr KAS Murshid. According to a circular of the Planning Division the taskforce that has,been formed to formulate anti-discriminatory and sustainable development strategies will prepare a primary full-fledged report within the next three months to lay the foundation of a just, sustainable and dynamic economy.

Agent banking has emerged as a crucial formal channel of financial transactions in rural areas, reaching a large unbanked population and contributing significantly to both deposits and lending, according to a latest Bangladesh Bank report. Deposits with the rural agent banking units stood at Tk 326.03 billion, 81.36 per cent of the overall deposits of Tk 400.73 billion by the end of June 2024, BB data shows. Deposit growth surged by nearly 20 per cent year-on-year in June 2024.

Indian line of credit (LoC) funding for Bangladesh's development projects will continue while Pakistan is also interested in doing business here, envoys of the two rival neighbours said during discussions with interim government's finance adviser. After the separate meetings in Dhaka on Tuesday, Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said the present post-uprising government would continue economic and trade cooperation with both India and Pakistan as both the countries are close neighbours of Bangladesh. During a call on him by Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Pranay Verma, the adviser said the Indian LoC-supported projects would continue as those are large in size and important too.

Around 100 readymade garment (RMG) factories in Ashulia and Gazipur industrial belts suspended operation as workers continued demonstrations on various demands despite increase in attendance and tiffin allowances, sources said. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) at a meeting with the law enforcing agencies, labour leaders and factory owners in Ashulia area on Monday night agreed to increase attendance allowance by Tk 225 and tiffin allowance by Tk 10 irrespective of the amount the workers in Ashulia are currently receiving.

Bangladesh Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the month of August, jointly released by Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Dhaka and Policy Exchange Bangladesh (PEB), has indicated improvement in the general economy. While still in contraction mode with a reading below 50 indicating overall slowdown, the August 2024 PMI said the interim government has been working tirelessly to rebuild political stability and ensure normal business operations across sectors following the fall of the Awami League regime.

Russia has asked Bangladesh to pay $630 million in outstanding and current interests on a loan for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant by 15 September, according to a letter from the Russian authorities. The letter follows Bangladesh's June request for alternative transaction methods to settle overdue interests, commitment fees and late fines caused by US sanctions on Russian banks. The $12.65 billion loan carries a maximum interest rate of 4%, with an additional penalty interest rate of 2.4% for overdue payments.

The bank, formerly known as Farmers Bank, has not paid any interest on the fixed deposit receipts (FDRs) opened by the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust for the past six years, according to officials of the Trust. On Tuesday (10 September), Rafiqul Islam, managing director of the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust which is operated under the Ministry of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, told TBS that the issue will be discussed in the next Advisory Council meeting, which will decide on how to recover the funds from Padma Bank.

The Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (Beza) is set to revoke the approval of the economic zone granted to S Alam Group, which is currently under scrutiny for extensive exploitation in the country's banking and financial sectors, in Chattogram's Banshkhali upazila, according to Beza sources. In 2023, Beza issued a pre-qualification licence for the Banshkhali S Alam Economic Zone-2, covering 259 acres in Gandamara, Banshkhali.

Industries on the capital's northern outskirts suffer as the supplier of Bhola gas to industrial consumers 'arbitrarily' snapped the supply, in time of fuel crunch, sources said. Officials said Intraco Refuelling Station shut the supply of compressed natural gas (CNG) to industries from Bhola island a couple of weeks back failing to provide bank guarantee worth around Tk 110 million to the government by the deadline. Before shutting operations, Intraco was supplying around 1.0-1.5 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas to consumers-only one-fourth of its committed supply of 5.0mmcfd to the factories, particularly in Gazipur and its adjoining areas, where piped-gas pressure remains low, a senior official of state-run Sundarban Gas Company Ltd (SGCL) told the FE Tuesday.

Today, that figure has surged to nearly 85%, marking a remarkable transformation of the sector into an export powerhouse. Despite this impressive growth, questions are being raised about its sustainability. At the time of its closure, Citycell, the country's only CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology operator, had around 15,000 subscribers.

Before the payment on Monday, the gross foreign exchange reserves, calculated under the IMF’s BPM6 standard, stood at $20.8 billion, but after the settlement, they fell to $19.46 billion. Bangladesh's gross foreign exchange reserves have declined following a $1.37 billion payment to the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) for July and August import bills, according to central bank sources. The ACU payment is made every two months. Before the payment on Monday, the gross foreign exchange reserves, calculated under the IMF's BPM6 standard, stood at $20.8 billion, but after the settlement, they fell to $19.46 billion.

Transparency International US (TI-US) and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) have said the US can show its genuine partnership by playing a proactive role in helping the people of Bangladesh recover the assets that rightly belong to them and that are so desperately needed to rebuild its future. They have written to the US Secretary of State and US Secretary of the Treasury seeking urgent action to support a transparent, accountable, inclusive, and democratic future for Bangladesh, reports UNB. In their letter to Secretary Anthony Blinken and Secretary Janet Yellen, Transparency International US Executive Director Gary Kalman and TIB Executive Director Iftekhar Zaman said as a long-standing partner of Bangladesh, the US can offer timely support at this crucial time in Bangladesh’s history.

The United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization has expressed their interest to assist Bangladesh in exporting mangoes from Bangladesh under their One Country One Product (OCEP) scheme. Representatives of the organisation who met the interim government's Agriculture Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury in the capital today (11 September), also showed eagerness in diversifying and extending the export of various crops from Bangladesh. In reply, the adviser said, "Besides mangoes, we produce a large amount of jackfruits, which can be included in the export basket. The agricultural ministry will fully cooperate with FAO in this regard."
