The stock market watchdog has launched an investigation to find out irregularities linked to two open-ended mutual funds and the asset manager and the custodian of the funds. A three-member enquiry committee will have to submit a probe report in 60 days, according to an order issued by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) on Monday.The two funds are Investasia Growth Fund and Investasia Balanced Unit Fund, launched in 2022 and 2023

সিঙ্গাপুরে দ্য বিজনেস স্ট্যান্ডার্ড পরিচালিত সরেজমিন তদন্তে দেখা গেছে, এস আলম একটি শপিং মলে ৩টি হোটেল ও রিটেইল স্পেস কেনার জন্য প্রায় ৭০০ মিলিয়ন সিঙ্গাপুরি ডলার (বর্তমান ডলারমূল্যে ছয় হাজার ৩০০ কোটি টাকার সমান) বিনিয়োগ করেছেন। এস আলম, তার স্ত্রী ফারজানা পারভীন এবং তার অফিসের কর্মীরা সিঙ্গাপুরে নিবন্ধিত চারটি কোম্পানির শেয়ারহোল্ডার। চারটি কোম্পানির নিবন্ধন নথিতে এস আলম ও তার স্ত্রী পারভীন নিজেদের সাইপ্রাসের নাগরিক হিসেবে পরিচয় দিয়েছেন।

জুলাই মাসে দেশের ব্যাংকিং খাতে আমানত কমেছে ৮ হাজার ২০০ কোটি টাকা। আমানত কমার মূল কারণ পাঁচ দিনের ইন্টারনেট ব্ল্যাকআউট, তিন দিন ব্যাংক বন্ধ থাকা ও দেশজুড়ে অস্থিরতার কারণে ব্যাংকিং কার্যক্রমে সাধারণ মন্দা নেমে আসা। অনিশ্চিত পরিস্থিতিতে হাতের কাছে নগদ অর্থ রাখতে চাওয়ায় আমানত কমার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে জুলাইয়ে মানুষের হাতে থাকা অর্থের পরিমাণও বেড়েছে প্রায় ১ হাজার ২০০ কোটি টাকা। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাঙ্কের তথ্য অনুসারে, জুলাইয়ে মোট আমানত কমে দাঁড়িয়েছে ১৭.৪২ লাখ কোটি টাকা, যা আগের মাসের চেয়ে ০.৪৭ শতাংশ কম। গতবছরের একই মাসের তুলনায় চলতি বছরের জুলাইয়ে আমানতের প্রবৃদ্ধি দাঁড়িয়েছে ৭.৯১ শতাংশ, যা গত ১৬ মাসের মধ্যে সর্বনিম্ন। এরচেয়ে কম ৭.৫৩ শতাংশ প্রবৃদ্ধি হয়েছিল ২০২৩ সালের মার্চে।

বিদ্যুৎ বিক্রি বাবদ বাংলাদেশ বিদ্যুৎ উন্নয়ন বোর্ডের (বিপিডিবি) কাছে বিপুল পরিমাণ পাওনা বকেয়া পড়েছে ভারতীয় কোম্পানি আদানি গ্রুপের। এ বিল পরিশোধে এরই মধ্যে বাংলাদেশের অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারকে সতর্কবার্তা দিয়েছে আদানি। আদানি ছাড়াও ভারত থেকে দেশটির সরকারের সঙ্গে বাংলাদেশে দ্বিপক্ষীয় বিদ্যুৎ বাণিজ্য চুক্তির আওতায় আনা হচ্ছে আরো ১ হাজার ১৬০ মেগাওয়াট বিদ্যুৎ। সেখানেও বকেয়া পড়ছে। এ বিপুল পরিমাণ বকেয়ার কারণে ভারত থেকে বিদ্যুৎ আমদানি ও সরবরাহ ব্যবস্থাপনায় বিঘ্ন এমনকি বন্ধ হয়ে পড়ারও আশঙ্কা দেখা দিয়েছে। বিপিডিবির কর্মকর্তারা বলছেন, দেশটি থেকে সরবরাহ বন্ধ হয়ে গেলে জরুরি ভিত্তিতে তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে পরিস্থিতি মোকাবেলার মতো সক্ষমতার বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র বাংলাদেশে আছে। যদিও আশঙ্কা রয়েছে এগুলো চালানোর জন্য পর্যাপ্ত জ্বালানির সংস্থান করা নিয়ে। এ ধরনের সমস্যা দেখা দিলে জ্বালানি সংকটের কারণে বিপিডিবি তা তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে মোকাবেলা করতে পারবে কিনা সে বিষয়ে বড় ধরনের সংশয় রয়েছে বলে মনে করছেন বিশেষজ্ঞরা।

দেশের আটটি অঞ্চলের ওপর দিয়ে সন্ধ্যার মধ্যে দমকা বা ঝোড়ো হাওয়াসহ বৃষ্টি বা বজ্রবৃষ্টি হতে পারে। আজ মঙ্গলবার (১০ সেপ্টেম্বর) সকালে দেশের অভ্যন্তরীণ নদীবন্দরগুলোর জন্য দেয়া আবহাওয়ার পূর্বাভাসে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়েছে। এতে বলা হয়েছে, খুলনা, যশোর, বরিশাল, পটুয়াখালী, নোয়াখালী, কুমিল্লা, চট্টগ্রাম এবং কক্সবাজার অঞ্চলের ওপর দিয়ে দক্ষিণ দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব দিক থেকে ঘণ্টায় ৪৫-৬০ কিমি বেগে অস্থায়ীভাবে দমকা বা ঝোড়ো হাওয়াসহ বৃষ্টি বা বজ্রবৃষ্টি হতে পারে। এসব এলাকার নদীবন্দরকে ১ নম্বর সতর্ক সংকেত দেখাতে বলা হয়েছে।

দিনাজপুরের ৫২৫ মেগাওয়াট ক্ষমতাসম্পন্ন বড় পুকুরিয়া তাপবিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রের তিনটি ইউনিট অচল হয়ে পড়ায় কেন্দ্রটির বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন পুরোপুরি বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে। ফের কবে উৎপাদন ও সরবরাহ সম্ভব হবে, তা নিশ্চিত করে বলতে পারছেন না সংশ্লিষ্টরা। যান্ত্রিক ত্রুটির কারণে সোমবার (৯ সেপ্টেম্বর) সকাল ৬টা ৬ মিনিট থেকে ২৭৫ মেগাওয়াট ক্ষমতাসম্পন্ন তৃতীয় ইউনিটটি অচল হয়ে পড়ে।

Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed reaffirmed on Tuesday that Indian line of credit (LoC) projects will continue, underscoring their importance for Bangladesh’s development. “These are significant projects, and we will continue them,” Dr Salehuddin said after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, at the Finance Ministry in the Bangladesh Secretariat.

The US is set to launch economic talks this week with Bangladesh's interim government, including its leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, reports Reuters on Tuesday citing The Financial Times. "The United States is optimistic that, by implementing needed reforms, Bangladesh can address its economic vulnerabilities and build a foundation for continued growth and increased prosperity"

Foreign-exchange reserves fall further as Bangladesh clears due import payments worth to US$ 1.37 billion through the Asian Clearing Union (ACU), but officials dispel any worry about this. After the clearance of import liabilities, the country's gross forex reserves dropped below $20-billion mark to $19.46 billion as on September 08, 2024 in accordance with the BPM6 calculations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Before the bi-monthly payment, the forex reserves counted $20.80 billion, as recorded on September 7, according to Bangladesh Bank (BB) data.

The government has sought US assistance in cleaning up the Buriganga and mapping the major sources of its pollution to revive the river's old look and rich biodiversity. Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that Bangladesh needed US assistance in this regard and underlined the importance of joint efforts in wildlife conservation to protect Bangladesh's rich biodiversity. The environment adviser said this when US High Commission Charge d'Affaires Helen LaFave met with her at her office in Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday.

Dhaka's air quality continued to be in the ‘moderate’ zone on Tuesday morning. With an air quality index (AQI) score of 96 at 9:00 am, Dhaka ranked 12th on the list of cities worldwide with the worst air quality, as per UNB reports. Democratic Republic of the Congo's Kinshasa, the United Arab Emirates’ Dubai and Uganda’s Kampala occupied the first three spots on the list, with AQI scores of 273, 189 and 184, respectively. An AQI between 50 and 100 is considered ‘moderate’ with acceptable air quality. However, there may be a health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.

Maintaining smooth supply of petroleum products looks challenging for LC payment backlog against the fuel imports amid forex crunch, sources said. State-run Sonali Bank PLC is also reluctant to open letter of credit (LC) besides clearing dues against imports made by Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), they said. Currently, there remain BPC dues with the bank the value of which is around $139.71 million, as of September 08.Chairman BPC Md. Amin Ul Ahsan recently wrote to the state-owned bank take requisite action for making payment as early as possible.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) may seek assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States to help recover nearly Tk 1.0 trillion worth of money siphoned off from Bangladesh during the Awami League regime. ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen said this on Monday following a meeting between ACC officials and an FBI team, led by legal Attaché Robert Cameron and Supervisory Special Agents, at the ACC headquarters. In response to a question, Khorsheda told newsmen that the FBI had assured ACC officials of providing their assistance in this regard.

The lone listed realtor's earnings per share stood at Tk 6.04 in FY24, down from Tk 7.37 the year before, according to price sensitive information published on Monday.

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের অডিট প্রতিবেদনের তথ্যানুসারে, ২০২১-২২ অর্থবছরে দাখিল করা ট্যাক্স রিটার্নে এস আলমের নিট সম্পদের পরিমাণ উল্লেখ রয়েছে ২৭৯.৫২ কোটি টাকা। ওই অর্থবছরে তার করযোগ্য আয়ের পরিমাণ ছিল ১৯.২০ কোটি টাকা; যার বিপরীতে তিনি ৬.২৯ কোটি টাকা আয়কর পরিশোধ করেন। ওই একই অর্থবছরের আয়কর বিবরণীতে এস আলমের ভাই আব্দুস সামাদ তার সম্পদ উল্লেখ করেছেন ৩০.৩৩ কোটি টাকা। সে বছর তার করযোগ্য আয় দেখানো হয়েছে ৪.৮৬ কোটি টাকা; যার বিপরীতে তিনি কর পরিশোধ করেছেন ১.৪৬ কোটি টাকা। চলতি বছরের জানুয়ারিতে এই অডিট করে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক।

Stocks opened higher on Tuesday after a six-day plunge as optimistic investors put fresh funds into lucrative shares. Many investors are optimistic about the return of good governance in the market as the massive reforms underway in the financial sectors, including capital market. Following the six-day fall, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 55 points or 0.97 per cent to 5,684 within the first hour of trading at 11:00am, when the report was filed.

International trade has played a crucial role in narrowing the income gap between economies since the formal inception of the World Trade Organization (WTO) three decades ago on January 1, 1995. Again during two and half decades after the establishment of WTO, between 1995 and 2020, trade cost reductions led to a 20 -35-percent rapid income convergence of low- and middle-income economies with high-income economies. The 2024 edition of the WTO's World Trade Report presented these findings. The theme of the report is 'Trade and inclusiveness: How to make trade work for all.' "From 1996 to 2021, a high trade share in GDP is significantly correlated to faster growth in low- and middle-income economies, converging to the level of GDP per capita in high-income economies," said the report.
