ঋণ কর্মসূচির শর্ত হিসেবে প্রান্তিক ভিত্তিতে বাংলাদেশের রিজার্ভ মুদ্রা বা মুদ্রাবাজারে থাকা তারল্যের সীমা বেঁধে দিয়েছিল আন্তর্জাতিক মুদ্রা তহবিল (আইএমএফ)। যদিও আইএমএফ ও বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, চলতি ২০২৪ সালের প্রথম তিন প্রান্তিক শেষে বাজারে প্রকৃত রিজার্ভ মুদ্রার পরিমাণ ছিল আইএমএফের বেঁধে দেয়া সীমার চেয়ে কম। গত মার্চ শেষে আইএমএফের বেঁধে দেয়া রিজার্ভ মুদ্রার সীমা ছিল ৪ লাখ ১৭ হাজার ৬০০ কোটি টাকা। এ সময়ে বাংলাদেশের প্রকৃত রিজার্ভ মুদ্রার পরিমাণ ছিল ৩ লাখ ৫৬ হাজার ৭৮৯ কোটি টাকা। সর্বোচ্চ সীমার তুলনায় রিজার্ভ মুদ্রা কম ছিল ৬০ হাজার ৮১১ কোটি টাকা। গত জুনে আইএমএফের বেঁধে দেয়া ৪ লাখ ২৫ হাজার ৭৭০ কোটি টাকা সীমার বিপরীতে প্রকৃত রিজার্ভ মুদ্রার পরিমাণ ছিল ৪ লাখ ১৩ হাজার ৬৪৭ কোটি টাকা। এক্ষেত্রে পার্থক্য ছিল ১২ হাজার ১২৩ কোটি টাকা। সর্বশেষ গত সেপ্টেম্বরে রিজার্ভ মুদ্রার পার্থক্য ছিল ৩০ হাজার ৮৯৭ কোটি টাকা।

দেশে গত বছর রেকর্ড চা উৎপাদন হয়েছিল। তবে চলতি বছর উৎপাদন খরায় ভুগছে এ খাত। জানুয়ারি-সেপ্টেম্বর পর্যন্ত দেশে চা উৎপাদন কমেছে গত বছরের একই সময়ের তুলনায় ৭২ লাখ ৪০ হাজার কেজি। চলতি মৌসুমে অপরিমিত বৃষ্টিপাত চা উৎপাদনে নেতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলেছে বলে জানিয়েছেন উৎপাদন সংশ্লিষ্টরা।বাংলাদেশ চা বোর্ড সূত্রে জানা গেছে, দেশে চলতি বছর চা উৎপাদনের লক্ষ্যমাত্রা ধরা হয়েছে ১০ কোটি ৮০ লাখ কেজি। বছরের শুরু থেকে সেপ্টেম্বর পর্যন্ত পণ্যটি উৎপাদনের পরিমাণ দাঁড়ায় ৬ কোটি ১৭ লাখ ৫০ হাজার কেজিতে, গত বছরের একই সময় যা ছিল ৬ কোটি ৮৯ লাখ ৯০ হাজার কেজি।

The government has lifted the highest investment limit of the wage earner bond for expatriate Bangladeshis to accelerate the remittance flow. With the removal of the cap, there is no ceiling of investment in any bonds issued by the government to enable NRBs to park their funds in the country. To this end, Internal Resources Division (IRD) on Sunday issued a notification, BSS reports. According to the notification, Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) mariners, pilots, and cabin crew members employed by foreign-owned shipping and airline companies are also now eligible to invest in Wage Earner Bonds.

He estimates that between US$12 and $15 billion was smuggled out of Bangladesh annually.

Commercial banks have changed strategy on foreign-currency management with its concentration on interbank swap and dollar-euro trades to avert shocks stemming from crawling- peg regime, thereby leaving the interbank forex market virtually derelict. As part of the changing approach in using foreign currencies in a more sustainable way in this critical period of time, banks having good stock of foreign trading currencies, the American greenback in particular, are averse to going for outright transaction in dollar on the interbank spot market where the ceiling of taka- dollar exchange rate is capped at Tk 120 under the crawling-peg mechanism prescribed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 02: The production of two units of the Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Plant has been stopped due to a coal shortage with effective from Saturday. The Matarbari power plant had been receiving its coal supply from Japan's Sumitomo Corporation. The contract for 2,205,000 MT of coal with the Japanese company ended back in August after the delivery of the last consignment. The coal supply has now been completely exhausted, which led to the complete shutdown of the power generation. However, the authorities expect that they will find a solution by the end of this month when new coal supply arrives, but power production is likely to remain suspended this month.

The securities regulator has initiated efforts to lower the capital gains tax for individual investors in a bid to stabilise and strengthen the stock market. "We are in talks with the government and the National Board of Revenue to reduce the tax rate on capital gains," said Khondoker Rashed Maqsood, chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), on Saturday." Our efforts to address this issue are ongoing, and we hope to have a positive results very soon," he said, adding that the regulator is focused on developing the capital market for the interest of individual investors.

Prices of vegetables showed a notable decline in a week thanks to rising supply of early winter crops, said traders.On Saturday morning, vegetables such as okra, pointed gourd, ridge gourd, and snake gourd were priced at Tk 50-60 per kilogramme (kg), reflecting a reduction of approximately Tk 20-30 a kg compared to the last week. Winter cauliflower and cabbage have seen noticeable price drops, falling to Tk 30-40 from Tk 60. Meanwhile, the price of bottle gourd has fallen to Tk 40-60 a piece from Tk 80-120.Brinjal, bitter gourd, and teasel gourd have been selling between Tk 80-100 per kg, while green papaya is available at Tk 40 a kg, all significantly affordable compared to the recent highs exceeding Tk 100 a kg.

Experts urged the government to implement effective reforms in the capital market and related institutions to restore investor confidence, which has long been undermined by corruption and irregularities. "The current dismal state of the capital market is the result of widespread corruption, irregularities, inefficiency, and poor decision-making," said Mominul Islam, chairman of Dhaka Stock Exchange at a discussion on Saturday.The DSE Brokers Association of Bangladesh (DBA) organised the discussion on 'Bangladesh capital market: Present context and Future Plans' in the city.
