তথ্য সংশোধন করে গত মাসে দেশের রফতানি আয়ের পরিসংখ্যান থেকে ১ হাজার ৪২০ কোটি বা ১৪ দশমিক ২০ বিলিয়ন ডলার বাদ দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। এতে প্রবৃদ্ধির ধারায় থাকা রফতানি খাত হঠাৎ করেই ঋণাত্মক ধারায় চলে গেছে। দেশে বিদেশী বিনিয়োগ ও ঋণ বা সহায়তার পরিস্থিতিও সন্তোষজনক নয়। ইতিবাচক ধারায় ছিল কেবল প্রবাসীদের পাঠানো রেমিট্যান্স। বিরাজমান অস্থিতিশীল পরিস্থিতিতে সেটিও বড় ধরনের ধাক্কা খেতে যাচ্ছে। এতে দেশের ক্ষয়িষ্ণু রিজার্ভ আরো বেশি ভঙ্গুর হওয়ার ঝুঁকিতে পড়ছে।

দেশের শীর্ষস্থানীয় রং উৎপাদনকারী প্রতিষ্ঠান বার্জার পেইন্টস বাংলাদেশ ৩১ মার্চ শেষ হওয়া ২০২৩-২৪ অর্থবছরের জন্য ২৩১.৮৮ কোটি টাকা বা ৫০০ শতাংশ নগদ লভ্যাংশ দেয়ার সুপারিশ করেছে, যা তাদের শেয়ারহোল্ডারদের জন্য সর্বোচ্চ অর্থপ্রদান হবে।শনিবার (২৭ জুলাই) অনুষ্ঠিত বোর্ড সভা থেকে লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে বলে কোম্পানি সূত্রে জানা গেছে। বার্জার পেইন্টসের কোম্পানি সেক্রেটারি খন্দকার আবু জাফর সাদিক দ্য বিজনেস স্ট্যান্ডার্ডকে বলেন, ২০১৬-১৭ অর্থবছরে তারা মোট ৬০০ শতাংশ নগদ লভ্যাংশ দিয়েছিলেন। তবে সে সময় কোম্পানির পরিশোধিত মূলধন ও শেয়ার সংখ্যা কম ছিল, তাই টাকার অঙ্কে লভ্যাংশের পরিমাণও কম ছিল।

২০২৪ সালের ৩০ জুনে সমাপ্ত বিগত অর্থবছরে (২০২৩-২৪) বাংলাদেশের বিদেশি ঋণ পরিশোধ ২৬ শতাংশ বেড়ে ৩৩৬ কোটি ডলারে পৌঁছেছে। রোববার (২৮ জুলাই) প্রকাশিত অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের (ইআরডি) হালনাগাদ প্রতিবেদন থেকে এই চিত্র পাওয়া গেছে। উচ্চ সুদহারের কারণে ঋণের সুদ পরিশোধ ৪৪ শতাংশ বেড়ে ১৩৫ কোটি ডলার হয়েছে। অন্যদিকে বিভিন্ন মেগা প্রকল্পের জন্য নেওয়া ঋণের গ্রেস পিরিয়িড শেষ হওয়ায় আসল পরিশোধ বাড়ছে। উচ্চ সুদের কারণে ঋণ পরিশোধের চাপ বেড়েছে বলে ইআরডি সূত্রে জানা গেছে। বিশেষজ্ঞরা সতর্ক করে বলেছেন, সুদসহ ঋণ পরিশোধের ব্যয় উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে বাড়ার ঘটনা বাংলাদেশের বাজেটের ওপর চাপ তৈরি করবে। এতে স্বাস্থ্য, শিক্ষা ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবকাঠামো খাতে সরকারের বিনিয়োগের সক্ষমতা সংকুচিত হবে।

The Cabinet Division has ordered all ministries, divisions and their subordinate offices to avail catering services from the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation in an effort to help the struggling national tourism organisation increase its revenue. The order was issued on 26 May in response to the corporation's request that they be allowed to supply food for national day celebrations, as well as for meetings, seminars, workshops, and symposiums held in those offices. Earlier on 23 April, the corporation requested the tourism ministry to communicate with the Cabinet Division in order to issue such an order to boost its income.

Chattogram Port, the key gateway for Bangladesh's international trade, was thrown into disarray last week due to a nationwide internet disruption that halted the loading and unloading of goods. Now, importers are being hit with demurrage charges for delays they had no control over. Leading trade bodies, including the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), have requested waiving these charges. However, the port authority has not agreed and instead instructed importers to apply for waivers individually. Businesses argue this process is lengthy and will lead to higher costs due to extended container demurrage times.

Remittance inflows and import LC openings have declined over the past week due to the unrest surrounding the quota reform movement, a 5-day internet blackout, and a three-day bank closure. According to the Bangladesh Bank, remittances from July 19-24 totalled only $78 million – an amount expatriates typically send in a single day through banking channels – resulting in total remittances of just $1.5 billion for the first 24 days of this month.
