The interim government's move to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the spot market faced a setback as the bids offered fell short of minimum requirement under the Public Procurement Rules (PPR) 2008. The authorities concerned received two bids each in response to two tenders floated to import two LNG cargoes from the spot market, but the PPR requires at least three bidders to evaluate the bid documents, officials said. The authorities couldn't even evaluate the bids after floating 'limited tendering', they said.

Although Bangladesh has been given duty-free facility to export 100% products to the Chinese market, there is not much enthusiasm among exporters, policy makers and economists. দেশের অন্তত এক ডজন ব্যাংকে নগদ টাকার তীব্র সংকট চলছে। কিছু ব্যাংকের সংকট এতটাই তীব্র যে ওই ব্যাংকগুলোর ক্যাশ কাউন্টারের কার্যক্রম এক প্রকার সীমিত হয়ে পড়েছে। আমানতকারীরা এসব ব্যাংকে কেবল টাকা তুলতেই যাচ্ছেন। কেউ জমা দিচ্ছেন না। আবার টাকা তুলতে না পেরে বেশির ভাগ গ্রাহকই ব্যাংক থেকে ফেরত যেতে বাধ্য হচ্ছেন। এ পরিস্থিতি উত্তরণে সংকটে থাকা ব্যাংকগুলোকে দ্রুততম সময়ের মধ্যে টাকা ধার দেয়ার উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। নগদ প্রবাহের দিক থেকে ভালো অবস্থানে থাকা নয়টি ব্যাংকের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালকের (এমডি) সঙ্গে গভর্নর ড. আহসান এইচ মনসুর গতকাল বৈঠক করেছেন। ওই বৈঠকে গভর্নর বলেন, ‘দ্রুততম সময়ের মধ্যে সংকটে থাকা ব্যাংকগুলোকে টাকা ধার নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। ধার নেয়া কোনো ব্যাংক যথাসময়ে টাকা ফেরত দিতে ব্যর্থ হলে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক তিনদিনের মধ্যে সুদসহ পরিশোধ করে দেবে।’

"Or we can also extend more lending under the existing support programme launched early last year," the Fund MD said during her meeting with the Chief Adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters -- one of the CA's summit engagements in the US city.

The total deposit liabilities, excluding interbank items, of the country's 61 scheduled banks increased by 4.34 per cent to about Tk 18.39 trillion during the second quarter (Q2) of 2024, compared to the first quarter (Q1). Bankers attributed the growth in April-June quarter (Q2) to better deposit rates. The deposit growth during the January-March quarter (Q1) was recorded at less than 1.0 per cent, reaching over Tk 17.62 trillion, according to a latest Bangladesh Bank (BB) report released on Wednesday.

In a major push to enforce compliance, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) has downgraded 27 more listed companies to the 'junk' or 'Z' category as half of them failed to declare any dividends for two consecutive years and the others did not complete the distribution of approved dividends. The DSE made the decision on Wednesday in line with a directive issued by the securities regulator on May 20, 2024, effective from today (Thursday). Of the 27 companies, 22 were shifted to 'Z' category from the 'B' category while the remaining five companies had been in the 'A' category. The stock brokers and merchant bankers have also been advised to abstain from providing loan facilities to investors for purchasing security of these companies with effect from today, according to a stock exchange filing.

The National Board of Revenue has asked the visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) team to reduce the revenue collection target set for Bangladesh for the current fiscal year considering the country's recent political changes. A senior NBR official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Business Standard that the IMF has set a revenue target of Tk4.78 lakh crore for Bangladesh for the fiscal 2024-25.
