Transitory inflation relief may be masking long-term risks that could derail Bangladesh's economic recovery, an official outfit alerts as pressures of prices persist. High prices of essential food items, particularly rice and fish, have kept food inflation stubbornly high, despite signs of macroeconomic stabilisation and government efforts to tame prices, says the General Economic Division (GED) of the Planning Commission. In its latest report, the GED reveals that these two staples alone accounted for a staggering 62 per cent of total food inflation in May, highlighting deep-rooted structural weaknesses in agriculture and supply chains. The June issue of the 'Economic Update and Outlook' shows that headline inflation fell to 9.05 per cent in May -- the lowest since the post-pandemic and Ukraine war-induced inflationary surge. However, volatility in essential-commodity markets continues to plague consumers, and the GED warns that short-term relief may be masking long-term risks that could derail the broader economic recovery.

Bangladesh faces mounting pressures on both external and internal economic fronts, the IMF says in its latest assessment on the country's economy and suggests some must-dos for a remedy. It notes that the macroeconomic challenges have deepened since the popular uprising in the summer of 2024, which led to the ouster of the previous government that had ruled the South Asian country for one and a half decades. The economic outlook still remains fragile due to persistent political uncertainty, a continued tight policy mix, rising global trade barriers, and growing stress in the banking sector, says the International Monetary Fund (IMF), underscoring the urgency of advancing key reforms to restore stability, protect vulnerable populations, and support inclusive and environmentally sustainable growth. "Bangladesh's economy continues to navigate multiple macroeconomic challenges," said Nigel Clarke, IMF Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair, as the Fund board just cleared two tranches of loans from an agreed lending package. "Despite the difficult environment, programme performance has remained broadly on track, and the authorities are committed to implementing the necessary policy actions and reforms."

The revenue authorities unearthed Tk 62.46 billion worth of tax evasions in the last nine months through investigations and intelligence measures. The field offices and intelligence units of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) realised nearly Tk10 billion in taxes from the evaded revenue, according to a press statement. From September 2024 to May 2025, two wings of the NBR--Customs and Income Tax--along with their field offices and intelligence units, conducted a total of 16,572 drives against illegal deduction of tax revenue. "These drives unearthed tax evasions worth Tk 62.46 billion, of which Tk 9.94 billion was recovered," said the statement. During the period, different customs houses conducted a total of 2,215 drives against tax-evasion, recovering the entire amount of evaded tax amounting to Tk 1.83 billion. Various Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerates were able to detect tax evasion worth Tk 5.13 billion and recover Tk 890 million through conducting 6,803 drives. The VAT Intelligence and Investigation Directorate in Dhaka carried out 231 drives and recovered Tk 2.40 billion from Tk 16.39 billion worth of detected tax evasion cases.

The yields on long-term treasury bonds increased significantly on Tuesday as banks expressed unwillingness to invest their excess liquidity in the risk-free securities. The cut-off yield, generally known as interest rate, on the 10-Year Bangladesh Government Treasury Bonds (BGTBs) rose to 12.28 per cent on the day from 11.88 per cent earlier, according to the auction results. The yield on the 20-Year BGTBs reached at 12.44 per cent from previous 12.24 per cent. "The yields on BGTBs have increased significantly due to the government's increased demand for funds ahead of the end of the outgoing fiscal year (FY) 2024-25," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told The Financial Express (FE) in response to a query. The government has already exceeded the limits for ways-and-means advances (WMAs) and overdraft (OD) drawing facilities from the central bank on the same ground, the central banker explained. Currently, the government is empowered to borrow up to Tk 120 billion from the BB under the WMAs to meet its day-to-day spending without issuing any securities. In addition, it is entitled to borrow a maximum of Tk 120 billion through OD drawing facility from the central bank for the same purpose.

The number of beneficiary owner's (BO) accounts with zero share balance surged by 6.8 per cent in the past one year as many investors sold off their entire holdings amid persistent economic challenges and political tensions. The number of BO accounts with share balance was 1.31 million on June 23 last year, which fell to 1.22 million on Tuesday. That means 0.90 million accounts had been emptied during the period. Therefore, nearly 28 per cent of the existing 1.69 million BO accounts have zero share balance, according to the data from the Central Depository Bangladesh Ltd (CDBL) that preserves information about individual and institutional investors. The market in this period experienced significant volatility and value erosion. So, owners of the empty BO accounts dumped their entire holdings even if they endured huge losses. In addition to the empty accounts, nearly 100,000 accounts were closed in the year to Tuesday. That indicates some investors exited the market while many may have reduced the number of portfolios they had amid lingering macroeconomic challenges.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec)on Tuesday approved 17 development projects involving an estimated cost of Tk 89.74 billion (Tk 8,974.28 crore). The approval came from the Ecnec meeting held at the NEC Conference Room in the city’s Planning Commission with Chief Adviser and Ecnec Chairperson Dr. Muhammad Yunus in the chair, reports UNB. Of the total cost, Tk 31.80 billion (Tk 3,180.34 crore) will come from the government’s own funds, Tk 55.63 billion (Tk 5,563.43 crore) as project assistance (loans) and the remaining Tk 2.30 (Tk 230.51 crore) from the funds of implementing agencies.

After Bangladesh leaves the Least Developed Country (LDC) group, 92 per cent of its export items will still enjoy zero duty in the United Kingdom (UK). Also, more than 99.8 per cent of Bangladeshi products will continue to enjoy zero duty in the UK until 2029, said British High Commissioner to Bangladesh. She shared this hopeful news during a meeting with Mahbubur Rahman, President of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Bangladesh, and other executive members of the Chamber at the ICCB secretariat in Dhaka on Monday. ICC Bangladesh President Mahbubur Rahman highlighted the long-standing and dynamic relationship between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, rooted in deep historical ties, vibrant people-to-people connections, and robust trade. He underscored the UK's position as one of Bangladesh's largest export destinations, particularly for ready-made garments, and acknowledged the active presence of British companies in Bangladesh's financial services, energy, and education sectors. পুঁজিবাজারে তারল্য সরবরাহ বাড়াতে ২০২০ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারিতে দেশের তফসিলি ব্যাংকগুলোর প্রতিটির জন্য ২০০ কোটি টাকার একটি তহবিল গঠন করে সরকার। একটি নীতিমালার অধীনে বিশেষ এ তহবিলের টাকা পুঁজিবাজারে বিনিয়োগ করতে পারে ব্যাংকগুলো। প্রধান উপদেষ্টার বিশেষ সহকারী ড. আনিসুজ্জামান চৌধুরীর সভাপতিত্বে সম্প্রতি অর্থ মন্ত্রণালয়ে অনুষ্ঠিত পুঁজিবাজার-সংক্রান্ত এক বৈঠকে এ তহবিলের মেয়াদ আরো বাড়ানোর পাশাপাশি বিনিয়োগ নীতিমালা কিছুটা শিথিল করার প্রস্তাব দিয়েছে ব্যাংকগুলো। যদিও এ বিষয়ে এখনো কোনো সুনির্দিষ্ট সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হয়নি বলে অর্থ মন্ত্রণালয়ের আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠান বিভাগ সূত্রে জানা গেছে। এ বিষয়ে জানতে চাইলে বিএসইসির পরিচালক ও মুখপাত্র মো. আবুল কালাম বণিক বার্তাকে জানান, গত সোমবার অর্থ মন্ত্রণালয়ে পুঁজিবাজার নিয়ে একটি বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে এবং এখানে কমিশনের প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে বিএসইসি চেয়ারম্যান উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday approved US$86.7 million in new financing to improve basic infrastructure and essential services for displaced people from Myanmar (DPFM) and host communities in Bangladesh. The support includes a $58.6 million grant and a $28.1 million concessional loan from the Asian Development Fund (ADF) and, ADB said in a statement. The ADF provides grants to ADB's poorest and most vulnerable developing member countries. The financing will support the "Integrated Services and Livelihood for Displaced People from Myanmar and Host Communities Improvement Project," which aims to strengthen access to water, sanitation, roads, food security, and disaster resilience in both Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char. A tailored approach will be applied to address the specific needs of both displaced and host populations, with an added focus on enhancing government capacity to implement such projects. "We are pleased to support Bangladesh in strengthening the protection and resilience of displaced people from Myanmar, while promoting social cohesion between those living in the camps and host communities," said ADB Country Director for Bangladesh Hoe Yun Jeong. He noted that this new funding builds on ADB's earlier assistance -- amounting to $171.4 million in grants and loans -- under the Emergency Assistance Project and its additional financing since 2018.

Risk-based supervision in banks will begin in January on a full scale to restore discipline in the banking industry, says Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur. As part of the financial-sector reforms, he said Tuesday, the central bank has already started piloting with the mechanism and the trial run of such supervision in all commercial banks will complete by this calendar yearend. "It (the trial) has already been completed in 20 banks. We want to bring back discipline in the banks through avoiding recurrence of previous bitterness in the system. And we will become successful undoubtedly," the chief the central bank told the audience at the launching event of Google Pay in Bangladesh at a city hotel. For the first time in Bangladesh, the US-based global tech giant, Google, has officially launched its digital-payment service, Google Pay, in partnership with The City Bank. Sharing improvement in the country's micro-management over the last several months, Mr. Mansur expects that the overall balance of the economy would be surplus in next July while the foreign-exchange reserves will be expanded by $7.0 billion-$8.0 billion from the level when he took the leadership of the central bank.

Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves rose to $22.24 billion yesterday following the addition of $350 million in funds from the World Bank (WB). The increase follows Monday's reserve figure at $21.75 billion as per BPM-6.
