Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur on Monday informed that the central bank will increase the policy rate twice and interest rate once within the next month in order to tame high inflation in the country.“ There is no doubt that we are going to tighten the monetary policy more. We will increase it by this week and will do it again in the next month. Besides, the interest rate will also be increased again soon,” he said. The BB governor said this while addressing a press conference at the BB headquarters in the city after holding a meeting of the task force constituted as a part of reforms in the banking sector. Earlier on August 24 this year, Bangladesh Bank hiked the policy or repo rate-at which commercial banks borrow from the central bank-by 50 basis points to 9 percent to rein in inflation.

Bangladesh has made significant strides in its broadband internet speed, moving up two spots in the global rankings. The country rose from the 101st position in July to the 99th position in August, according to the Speedtest Global Index published by Ookla.There has also been a minor improvement in mobile internet speeds. However, this has not resulted in a change in the ranking. Bangladesh retained its 89th place in the mobile internet speed index in August, the same as in July.

শ্রমিক অসন্তোষের জেরে সৃষ্ট অস্থিরতা কাটিয়ে ঢাকার আশুলিয়া শিল্পাঞ্চলের সার্বিক পরিস্থিতি গত সপ্তাহ থেকে স্বাভাবিক অবস্থায় ফিরলেও গতকাল (২২ সেপ্টেম্বর) থেকে ন্যূনতম মজুরি ২৫ হাজার টাকা নির্ধারণসহ বিভিন্ন দাবিতে শ্রমিকরা আবারও আন্দোলন শুরু করেন। ফলে, আজ সোমবার (২৩ সেপ্টেম্বর) নতুন করে শিল্পাঞ্চলের বেশ কিছু পোশাক কারখানা বাংলাদেশ শ্রম আইন ২০০৬-এর ১৩(১) ধারায় 'নো ওয়ার্ক, নো পে' ভিত্তিতে অনির্দিষ্টকালের জন্য বন্ধ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে। বন্ধ ঘোষণা করা কারখানাগুলোর মধ্যে রয়েছে: হামীম গ্রুপ, নাসা গ্রুপ, ব্যান্ডো ডিজাইন লিমিটেড, ডেকো গ্রুপ, স্টারলিং ক্রিয়েশনসহ বেশ কিছু পোশাক কারখানা। এসব কারখানার অধিকাংশই আশুলিয়ার বাইপাইল-আব্দুল্লাহপুর সড়কের বাইপাইল থেকে জিরাবো এলাকা পর্যন্ত অবস্থিত।

Nearly three dozen renewable-energy projects with around 3,287-megawatt generation capacity are now stalled at the final stage of inking power purchase agreements (PPAs) with a state power agency. Sources say with initial government consent before the August changeover, the private entrepreneurs were about to enter into PPAs with state-run Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). But now the process faces delays.

Bangladesh has received $1.63 billion in remittances in 21 days of September 2024, according to a report released by Bangladesh Bank on Sunday. This represents a $300 million increase compared to the same period last year, when expatriates sent $1.33 billion in September 2023.The central bank’s data reveals that the average daily remittance inflow for September is $77.8 million. If this pace continues, the total remittance for the month is expected to surpass $2.33 billion.

করফাঁকি দেওয়া কাউকেই ছাড় দেওয়া হবে না বলে হুঁশিয়ারি দিয়েছেন জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ডের (এনবিআর) চেয়ারম্যান আবদুর রহমান খান। সোমবার (২৩ সেপ্টেম্বর) রাজধানীর আগারগাঁওয়ে রাজস্ব ভবনে অনলাইনে আয়কর রিটার্ন জমাদানকে সহজ করতে ই-রিটার্ন সার্ভিস সেন্টার চালুর পর সাংবাদিকদের সঙ্গে আলাপকালে তিনি একথা বলেন। আব্দুর রহমান বলেন, ব্যক্তি কিংবা প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক পর্যায়ে করফাঁকি দেয়ার প্রবণতা রয়েছে। তবে এখন থেকে করফাঁকি দিয়ে কেউই রেহাই পাবে না।

বৈষম্যবিরোধী আন্দোলন ও ছাত্র-জনতার গণ-অভ্যুত্থানকে ঘিরে চলতি অর্থবছরের প্রথম মাস জুলাইয়ে দেশে অস্থিরতা বিরাজ করছিল। একের পর এক প্রাণহানির ঘটনায় আন্দোলন তীব্র হলে একপ্রকার অচল হয়ে পড়ে দেশ। পরিস্থিতি মোকাবেলায় জারি করা হয় সান্ধ্য আইন। বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয় ইন্টারনেট পরিষেবা। ব্যাহত হয় রফতানি কার্যক্রম, স্থবির হয়ে পড়ে পণ্য জাহাজীকরণ। তবে এতসব ঘটনায়ও কোনো প্রভাব ফেলেনি রফতানি পরিসংখ্যানে। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের প্রতিবেদনে উঠে এসেছে, উত্তাল জুলাইয়ে দেশের রফতানি বেড়েছে ২ দশমিক ৯১ শতাংশ। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক ‘মেজর ইকোনমিক ইন্ডিকেটর: মান্থলি আপডেট’ শীর্ষক আগস্টের প্রতিবেদন গতকাল প্রকাশ করেছে। তাতে দেখা যায়, জুলাইয়ে বিশ্ববাজারে বাংলাদেশ থেকে পণ্য রফতানি হয়েছে ৩৮২ কোটি ৩৭ লাখ ডলারের। ২০২৩ সালের একই মাসে পণ্য রফতানির অর্থমূল্য ছিল ৩৭১ কোটি ৫৬ লাখ বা ৩ দশমিক ৭১ বিলিয়ন ডলার। এ হিসাবে ২ দশমিক ৯১ শতাংশ রফতানি প্রবৃদ্ধি হয়েছে গত জুলাইয়ে। দেশের এমন পরিস্থিতিতে রফতানি প্রবৃদ্ধির এ তথ্য যদিও বিশ্বাসযোগ্য নয় বলে মনে করছেন সংশ্লিষ্টরা। তারপরও এর যথার্থতা যাচাইয়ে গত বছরের জুলাইয়ে ঈদের ছুটির কারণে উৎপাদন বন্ধ থাকার বিষয়টি বিবেচনায় নিচ্ছেন তারা।

The Ministry of Industries (MoI) has imposed a fine of Tk35 lakh on SN Corporation Shipbreaking Yard following a deadly explosion on 7 September, which claimed the lives of six workers and injured six others.In addition to the hefty fine, the yard has been ordered to halt all operations for three months as part of the punitive measures. The ministry has also mandated that the families of the deceased victims receive compensation totaling Tk7 lakh per family. This includes Tk5 lakh under Section 45.3 of the Ship Breaking and Recycling Rules, 2011, and an additional Tk2 lakh as per the provisions of the Labour Law.

These formal arrangements are essential for creating robust legal frameworks to support this process, says the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit. Official sources indicate that the BFIU has submitted a list of ten major destinations known for capital flight from Bangladesh to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Michal Krejza, Head of Cooperation, Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Dhaka on Monday hoped that online tax return submission may increase to 1.5 million from 0.5 million in Bangladesh this year. Krejza said this at the official launching of the new e-Return Service Centre at the NBR Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon area on Monday morning. "We hope that the number of people using this service centre (funded by the EU) and the number of people submitting electronic tax returns will rise quickly," he said.The Service Centre, which is operated by NBR officials trained in Service centre and e-Return system intricacies, is funded by the European Union (EU) as part of their Public Financial Management Programme.

China has said, with its visiting medical team, they will help Bangladesh assess the injuries and provide emergency humanitarian medical assistance based on Bangladesh's needs, including sending more emergency medical teams to treat patients on-site and providing necessary medical supplies. This is the first emergency medical team from China to Bangladesh since the establishment of the Interim Government, which highlights two countries' excellent bilateral relations and the deep bond of mutual support between the two peoples, said Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen.

যেসব ব্যাংকের সঙ্গে চুক্তি হয়েছে, তারা এখন আন্তঃব্যাংক বাজার থেকে তহবিল সংগ্রহ করে বোর্ডের অনুমোদন নিয়ে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকে গ্যারান্টির জন্য পাঠাবে। এরপর কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক গ্যারান্টির আওতায় কোন ব্যাংক কত টাকা নিতে পারবে, তা বিবেচনা করে অনুমতি দেবে। সংকটে থাকা পাঁচটি ব্যাংককে আন্তঃব্যাংক মুদ্রবাজার থেকে তারল্য সুবিধা পেতে গ্যারান্টি দেবে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক পাঁচটি ব্যাংককে গ্যারান্টি দিতে চুক্তি সই করেছে। তারল্য সংকটে থাকা কোনো ব্যাংক অপর ব্যাংক থেকে তারল্য সুবিধা পেলে সে অনুযায়ী কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের কাছে গ্যারান্টির প্রস্তাব চাইবে। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক সার্বিক বিষয় বিবেচনায় নিয়ে গ্যারান্টি সুবিধা দেবে। এখন পর্যন্ত সংকটে থাকা সাতটি ব্যাংক আন্তঃব্যাংক মুদ্রাবাজার থেকে ২৫ হাজার কোটি টাকার বেশি তারল্য সহায়তা পেতে কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের কাছে গ্যারান্টি চেয়ে আবেদন করেছে।

The yields on three types of treasury bills (T-bills) fell further on Sunday as banks expressed willingness to invest their excess liquidity in the short-term securities. The cut-off yield, generally known as interest rate, on the 91-day T-bills came down to 11.49 per cent on Sunday from 11.51 per cent of the previous level while the yield on 182-day T-bills fell to 11.72 per cent from 11.75 per cent earlier. The yield on 364-day T-bills also came down to 11.8999 per cent on the day from 11.9200 per cent of the previous-day level, according to the auction results.

Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Christian Brix Møller expressed condolences for the victims of the July-August mass uprising and proceeded to offer Danish support to the survivors, particularly rehabilitation of victims of torture as well as support to several key areas of the interim government´s reform agenda. The Ambassador paid a courtesy call to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Sunday, as per UNB reports. Denmark is committed to enabling good governance and strengthening the capacity of state and non-state actors, and has also decided in view of the recent development in Bangladesh, to immediately allocate 1 million USD in support to the Centre for Policy Dialogue’s (CPD) work on strengthening good economic governance in Bangladesh and escaping the middle-income trap.

The government's revenue collection significantly declined during the first two months, July and August, of the current fiscal year (FY25), primarily due to the country's unstable situation, according to sources from the National Board of Revenue (NBR). Sources said that, according to the finance ministry's Integrated Budget and Accounting System (iBAS++), the NBR collected about Tk41,000 crore in the first two months of this fiscal year, missing the target by around Tk10,000 crore. This collection is about 7% less than what was collected during the same period last year, based on finance ministry data. However, compared to the NBR's own data from last year, the shortfall is more than 11%.

দেশে গ্যাস সংকট নিরসনে বিগত আওয়ামী লীগ সরকার ‘গ্যাস সেক্টর মাস্টারপ্ল্যান-২০১৭’ তৈরি করেছিল। যেখানে মধ্যম ও দীর্ঘমেয়াদি সমস্যা সমাধানে ২০৪১ সাল পর্যন্ত এলএনজি আমদানিকেই মোটাদাগে প্রাধান্য দেয়া হয়। আর এ নীতিকে লুফে নেয় দেশী-বিদেশী বিশেষ কয়েকটি কোম্পানি। ২০১৮ সাল থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত আমদানি করা হয়েছে অন্তত দেড় লাখ কোটি টাকার এলএনজি। এসব প্রতিষ্ঠানকে কাজ দেয়ার পেছনে মোটা অংকের কমিশন বাণিজ্য হয়েছে বলেও অভিযোগ রয়েছে। পেট্রোবাংলা সূত্রে জানা গেছে, এলএনজি আমদানি চুক্তি, টার্মিনাল নির্মাণ, রিগ্যাসিফিকেশন, স্পট মার্কেট থেকে সরবরাহসহ সংশ্লিষ্ট কাজগুলো ঘুরেফিরে হাতেগোনা কয়েকটি প্রতিষ্ঠানই পেয়েছে। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে স্থানীয় কোম্পানি সামিট গ্রুপ, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের এক্সিলারেট এনার্জি, সিঙ্গাপুরভিত্তিক এমএস গানভর ও ভিটল এশিয়া, জাপানের জেরা, সুইজারল্যান্ডের টোটাল এনার্জি গ্যাস অ্যান্ড পাওয়ার। তবে সামিট গ্রুপকেই এ খাতে সবচেয়ে বেশি প্রাধান্য দিয়েছে শেখ হাসিনা সরকার।

On the other side of unremitting inflation, a product of no-holds-barred free market economy, is decline in purchasing power of people ---only more so of the low- and fixed-income groups. If shrinking purchasing power is not compensated by corresponding rise in income, the inevitable consequence is deepening poverty. At a time Bangladesh economy was about to witness a turnaround early in the post-Covid-19 period, the Russo-Ukraine war not only halted the process but also threw the prospect of an economic recovery into uncertainty. The main culprit was the sudden price hike of fuel oils for which Bangladesh has to overwhelmingly depend on import. The wind taken out of its sails, the country, like many others with little or no domestic energy sources, discovered itself in a critical situation. Under a system of kleptocracy of the lumpen moneyed and business class unduly served by their bureaucratic cohorts, outrageously unequal wealth distribution only pushed more people to get marginalised.

Much expectation has been generated among the masses following a people's revolution in Bangladesh culminating in the assumption of office by an interim government. There is now almost a universal consensus that the state needs to be repaired before a national election is held in order to put the country on the path of a genuinely liberal democratic dispensation. Heeding this popular demand, the chief adviser of the interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus has announced the formation of six commissions- tasked to submit recommendations on reforming six critical domains of the state, viz. the constitution, public administration, the police, judiciary, electoral system, and curbing corruption. Reforming the state is a very complex and difficult task. Besides, there is widespread demand and aspiration for reforms among the masses. However, compromises may have to be made due to the limited time and resources of the interim government, and the impossibility of materialising all aspirations at the same time. Therefore, priorities have to be set at all stages of this upcoming reform exercise.
