The Indian rupee rose for the fifth straight session on Friday, helped by gains in Asian peers and likely portfolio inflows, after the US Federal Reserve kicked off its interest rate cutting cycle earlier this week. The rupee closed at 83.5625 against the US dollar, up from its close at 83.68 in the previous session. The Indian currency jumped to a more than two-month high of 83.4850 earlier in the session and gained nearly 0.4 per cent week-on-week, its strongest weekly rise this year. The Fed's larger-than-usual 50-basis-point rate cut on Wednesday, and inflows into local stocks and bonds have lifted the rupee, traders said.

Experts during a webinar on Friday said regional trade in South Asia remained one of the least integrated regions and did not improve much in decades due to the narrow and non-cooperative political economic approach. The South Asian regional trade has remained 5 per cent in the last 30 years while Southeast Asian regional trade 25 per cent and European Union 20 per cent, they added. They also said the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) might complement the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to some extent, but a rejuvenated SAARC could play a vital role in regional integration.

The interim government is reconsidering the appointment of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation tasked with building two jetties at Mongla Sea Port. Initially awarded through the direct purchase method, the project may now face a fresh tender process to ensure transparency. The Chinese corporation had been granted the project without open competition, which has raised concerns within the government. The direct purchase method is viewed as susceptible to improper benefits for certain vested interests under the previous administration.

A Chinese national emergency medical team is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today (22 September) to provide advanced treatment to those who suffered severe injuries during the recent student-led mass upsurge. China is sending the team at the request of the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, said the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka. The team will be arriving from Kunming by a flight which will land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 13:35pm.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) today predicted the ongoing mild to moderate heat wave at five places in the country is likely to abate from some places, in the next 24 hours commencing 9am today. "Mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions and the districts of Sylhet and Jashore may abate from some places," said a met office bulletin this morning.

আগস্টের একই সময়ে দেশে এসেছিল ১৫০ কোটি ৩৬ লাখ ডলার। সে হিসেবে চলতি মাসে রেমিট্যান্স প্রবাহ বেড়েছে। চলতি মাস সেপ্টেম্বরের প্রথম ২১ দিনে দেশে রেমিট্যান্স এসেছে ১৬৩ কোটি ৪২ লাখ মার্কিন ডলার। প্রতিদিন গড়ে দেশে এসেছে ৭ কোটি ৭৮ লাখ ডলার। আজ (রোববার) বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের হালনাগাদ প্রতিবেদন থেকে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। এতে বলা হয়, আগস্টের একই সময়ে দেশে এসেছিল ১৫০ কোটি ৩৬ লাখ ডলার। সে হিসেবে চলতি মাসে রেমিট্যান্স প্রবাহ বেড়েছে। সেপ্টেম্বরের প্রথম তিন সপ্তাহে রাষ্ট্র মালিকানাধীন ব্যাংকগুলোর মাধ্যমে এসেছে ৪৮ কোটি ৭ লাখ ৫০ হাজার মার্কিন ডলার। এ ছাড়া বিশেষায়িত ব্যাংকের মাধ্যমে ৬ কোটি ৯৮ লাখ ৩০ হাজার ডলার, বেসরকারি ব্যাংকের মাধ্যমে ১০৭ কোটি ৯৬ লাখ ১০ হাজার ডলার ও বিদেশি খাতের ব্যাংকগুলোর মাধ্যমে এসেছে ৪০ লাখ ৩০ হাজার ডলার রেমিট্যান্স।

As many as five banks hamstrung by a severe liquidity crunch have struck an agreement with the Bangladesh Bank (BB) to borrow funds from stronger banks through interbank transactions. The deal was finalised on Sunday between the central bank and the five banks, said Husne Ara Shikha, spokesperson for the central bank. The banks involved are National Bank, Social Islami Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Union Bank, and Global Islami Bank.The Bangladesh Bank will act as a guarantor for these loans. Although the central bank will charge a small commission for this service, it may create an opportunity for the struggling banks to recover from their current dire situation

The current management of the mobile financial services provider Nagad will be able to run the institution independently according to its decision, according to an official. Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Husne Ara Shikha said a meeting between the central bank governor and Nagad management board took place on Sunday. “The governor told the management board to make whatever decision it deems appropriate,” she said.The central bank appointed a new administrator at Nagad on Aug 21 this year.

Chief Adviser Prof Dr. Muhammad Yunus is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 79th annual general assembly of United Nations in New York. An official of Bangladesh’s foreign ministry confirmed the matter on Saturday night, according to local news portals. However, the official did not provide the date and time of the probable meeting.Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus will arrive in New York on September 23 by a commercial flight for a five-day visit. He will address the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on September 27.

The Tk334 crore lavish circuit house project planned in the capital's Bailey Road was deemed less important and sent back by the then planning minister in 2022. But in less than one and half years the same project got approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) at the insistence of another planning minister. This is only one instance how a project's priority changes with the change of persons with authority and it gets cleared, no matter whether the Planning Commission raised questions about cost estimations or its very relevance. Vested interest groups with political connections were allegedly at play in the circuit house construction project, which aimed to build a 5-star facility on the site of the old circuit house on Bailey Road. The Planning Commission raised several objections to the project, and even the public administration ministry was reluctant to propose the project, which was meant to benefit public officials. That, however, did not stop its approval.

DHEU, which, for the first time, introduced apparel catering to customers with a preference for Western-style fashion in Bangladesh in early 2023 and gradually expanded its outlets from Dhaka to other major cities across the country, now wants to sell its products outside the country. "Our goal is to gradually establish this brand internationally, including in Europe and other regions. Through this brand, we will be able to sell clothing in those countries, and it is achievable. However, before that, we want to further expand the market in Bangladesh," Saraf Saiyara, CEO of DHEU, told TBS in an interview recently.

বাংলাদেশে খাদ্যশস্যের উৎপাদন লাগাতার বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। স্বাধীনতার পর গত ৫৩ বছরে খাদ্যশস্যের উৎপাদন বেড়েছে বছরে গড়ে প্রায় ৩ শতাংশ হারে। তার পরও বিপুল পরিমাণ খাদ্যশস্য আমরা আমদানি করছি প্রতি বছর। এর মধ্যে আছে চাল, গম ও ভুট্টাসহ অন্যান্য পণ্য। শুধু দানাদার খাদ্যশস্যের আমদানির পরিমাণ দাঁড়ায় বছরে ৭০-৮০ লাখ টন। এর সঙ্গে অন্যান্য কৃষিপণ্য যেমন ডাল, তেলবীজ, চিনি, মসলা ও দুগ্ধজাত পণ্য যোগ করা হলে মোট আমদানির পরিমাণ দাঁড়ায় ৯০-১০০ লাখ টন। টাকার অংকে আমদানি ব্যয়ের পরিমাণ দাঁড়ায় ৮০-৯০ হাজার কোটি টাকা। তার পরও দেশে খাদ্যনিরাপত্তার ঘাটতি আছে, বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে খাদ্য মূল্যস্ফীতি। বর্তমানে দেশের প্রায় ২২ শতাংশ মানুষ খাদ্যনিরাপত্তাহীনতায় ভুগছে। এটি দূর করতে হলে এবং ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে সবার জন্য খাদ্য ও পুষ্টির নিশ্চয়তা বিধান করতে হলে কৃষিপণ্যের উৎপাদন আরো দ্রুত বাড়াতে হবে। তার মাত্রা হতে হবে ন্যূনপক্ষে বছরে গড়ে ৪-৫ শতাংশ। সেই সঙ্গে বিতরণ ব্যবস্থার উন্নতি সাধন করতে হবে। কৃষিপণ্যের বাজারজাত উদ্বৃত্ত আরো বাড়াতে হবে। এক্ষেত্রে চ্যালেঞ্জ অনেক। উল্লেখযোগ্য চ্যালেঞ্জগুলোর মধ্যে আছে কৃষিজমি হ্রাস, আবাদযোগ্য জমি চাষের বাইরে ফেলে রাখা, জমির উর্বরতা হ্রাস, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের বিরূপ প্রভাব, খাদ্য অপচয়, অদক্ষ বাজার ব্যবস্থা ইত্যাদি।

প্রায় একমাস পর উৎপাদনে ফিরল রাঙামাটির কাপ্তাই উপজেলার কর্ণফুলী পেপার মিলস (কেপিএম) লিমিটেড। গত বুধবার রাত থেকে উৎপাদনে ফিরেছে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি। একমাস আগে কাঁচামাল সংকট ও কারিগরি ত্রুটির কারণে মিলটির উৎপাদন বন্ধ হয়ে গিয়েছিল। এদিকে, কর্ণফুলী পেপার মিলসের উৎপাদন শুরু হওয়ার বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করে কেপিএমের মহাব্যবস্থাপক আবুল কাশেম বলেন, "বিভিন্ন যান্ত্রিক ত্রুটি মেরামত শেষে গত বুধবার রাত থেকেই কেপিএমের উৎপাদন চালু হয়েছে। বর্তমানে মিলের কাগজ উৎপাদনে কাঁচামাল হিসেবে পাল্প ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে। ইতোমধ্যে কাগজ উৎপাদনের সব প্রক্রিয়া চালু হয়েছে।"

The poverty rate in Bangladesh has risen to 20.5 per cent from 18.7 per cent in the last two years of the Awami League regime. This escalation has been driven by widening economic inequality, leaving marginalised groups struggling for access to resources and opportunities, while their livelihoods face growing threats. These concerns were emerged at the national public meeting titled "Eliminating Poverty and Inequality and Strengthening Universal Social Security".

Bangladesh has recently sought $1.0-billion budgetary support from Japan to facilitate the country's post-flood recovery in the eastern region and also to weather the economic storm, officials said on Saturday. "We sent a request letter to our friendly country Japan early this month seeking its support. Bangladesh needs sizeable funds to recover the economy, damaged by some wrong macro-economic policies of the Sheikh Hasina government and sudden floods in late August," said a senior official of the Economic Relations Division (ERD). "We also wrote to Japan seeking its budget support in last regime…"

Nearly Tk 10 billion of the Labour Welfare Fund (LWF) remained stuck in the banks facing liquidity shortage, making it difficult for the authorities concerned to spend on labour and tame unrest. The funds deposited with the banks could not be withdrawn and provided to the labourers facing financial challenges to give them some relief. The LWF has not been operated as per the rules in the last 15 years. Labour Secretary AHM Shafiquzzman said this while speaking as chief guest at a mock parliament debate competition, organised by Debate for Democracy (DfD) at FDC premises in the city on Saturday.

Deposits in no-frills accounts (NFAs) declined in April-June 2024, marking a 1.45-per cent deficit from that of the previous January-March quarter, according to Bangladesh Bank (BB) data. However, such deposits saw a substantial 14.31-per cent rise compared to the corresponding period last year. Total deposits in Tk 10/50/100 accounts stood at Tk 47.21 billion in the reporting quarter, revealed the central bank data. The deposits in NFAs were more than Tk 47.91 billion between January and March. As of 31 March 2024, the data shows, the total number of such accounts stood at over 27.26 million.

একসময় সাধারণ মধ্যবিত্তের পাতে ছিল ইলিশের নিত্য আনাগোনা। একেবারে নিম্নবিত্তেরও নাগালের বাইরে ছিল না ইলিশ। ভৌগোলিক অবস্থানের কারণে বিশ্বের বেশির ভাগ ইলিশ বাংলাদেশেই উৎপাদন হয়। গত এক যুগে মাছটির উৎপাদন বেড়ে প্রায় দ্বিগুণ হয়েছে। কিন্তু অর্থনীতির সাধারণ নিয়মের ধারায় উৎপাদন বৃদ্ধির ধারাবাহিকতায় বাজারে সরবরাহ বেড়ে মূল্য হ্রাস পাওয়ার বিষয়টি ইলিশের ক্ষেত্রে ঘটেনি। বরং একই সময়ে উৎপাদনের মতো দামও বেড়ে হয়েছে কয়েক গুণ। আর সাধারণ মধ্যবিত্তের টেবিল থেকে বিদায় নিয়েছে ইলিশ। মাছটির ওপর একচেটিয়া অধিকার তৈরি হয়েছে অভিজাতবর্গের।

রূপপুর পারমাণবিক বিদ্যুৎকেন্দ্র (আরএনপিপি) থেকে বিদ্যুৎ স্থানান্তর করতে বিদ্যুৎ সঞ্চালন প্রকল্পগুলোর দায়িত্ব পাওয়া ভারতীয় প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তারা এখনও কাজে ফেরেননি। এতে এসব প্রকল্পগুলোর অগ্রগতি নিয়ে উদ্বেগের সৃষ্টি করছে। পাওয়ার গ্রিড বাংলাদেশ পিএলসির একজন শীর্ষ কর্মকর্তা ইউএনবিকে বলেন, 'কেইসি ইন্টারন্যাশনাল লিমিটেড ও ট্রান্সরেল লাইটিং লিমিটেডের (টিটিএল) কয়েকজন কর্মী ফিরে এলেও লারসেন অ্যান্ড টুব্রো লিমিটেড (এল অ্যান্ড টি) বা অন্যান্য প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর কেউ এখনও ফিরে আসেননি।'

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has sought assistance from the World Bank to upgrade the surveillance system of the capital market to international standards. "We are working to upgrade this system as quickly as possible, and for this, we have requested assistance from the World Bank, including technical support," BSEC Commissioner Farzana Lalarukh said after a meeting with a World Bank delegation yesterday.

India is investigating the business practises of US streaming giant Netflix's local operations, including allegations of visa violations and racial discrimination, according to a government email sent to a former executive. The details of India's investigation were included in a July 20 email, reviewed by Reuters, which was written by a home ministry official to Netflix's former director of business and legal affairs for India, Nandini Mehta, who left the company in 2020. "This is regarding visa and tax violations concerns regarding the business practises of Netflix in India," wrote Indian official Deepak Yadav from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) of the home ministry in New Delhi.

এক বছরেরও বেশি সময় আগে ভারতের সঙ্গে ডলারের বদলে রুপিতে আমদানি-রপ্তানির সুযোগ চালু হলেও সেটি খুব বেশি আশা দেখাতে পারছে না। ২০২৩ সালের জুলাই মাসে ভারতের সঙ্গে বাণিজ্যের নতুন এই পদ্ধতি চালু করা হলেও লেনদেনের পরিসংখ্যান বলছে, ভারতীয় মুদ্রায় ব্যবসা হয়েছে তুলনামূলকভাবে অনেক কম। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, ২০২৩ সালের ১১ জুলাই থেকে ২০২৪ সালের ১০ সেপ্টেম্বর পর্যন্ত বাংলাদেশ থেকে ভারতীয় মুদ্রায় ৩৩.০৮ মিলিয়ন রুপির রপ্তানি হয়েছে। আর একই সময়ে ভারত থেকে আমদানি হয়েছে ২১.০২ মিলিয়ন রুপির।
