A much-hyped rollout of digital banking in Bangladesh faces a rocky start with the maiden two stuck in licensing review and compliance quandary, sources say. The proposed Nagad Digital Bank faces licensing review and Kori Digital Bank struggles with compliance issues, leaving a bunch of others exasperating in the queue.In October 2023, Bangladesh Bank, the central bank, issued letters of intent (LoIs) to the two proposed digital banks at the first go-Nagad Digital Bank and Kori Digital Bank.

A Tk 15.55-billion project has been taken for the recovery and beautification of the virtually dead river Ichamoti in Pabna under "high-quarter influence" during the past government, insiders said. The state-owned Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) would demolish 22 bridges on the river, some are recently built. And it will build 23 new ones with modern architectural design for the beautification of Pabna town, they said.

Some 41.7 million people in Bangladesh live in extreme poverty with 6.5 per cent of them in critical condition, says a latest UN agency report that also paints grim pictures for two regions. In South Asia, 272 million poor people live in households with at least one undernourished person, and Sub-Saharan Africa has 256 million in such a miasma, according to the update of the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI).

Prices of nutrition-rich commodity egg and another essential item, green chilli, declined last week, thanks to multiple initiatives taken by the interim government. On the other hand, the price of Sonali chicken variety increased notably during the period. Vegetable prices also remained at their previous highs. The price of a dozen eggs has declined to Tk 150 in kitchen markets, down from Tk 180 a week ago. Grocers are currently selling egg at Tk 160-165 a dozen from Tk 180-190 earlier.

Stocks experienced another major setback this week, with the key index tumbling below the 5,300 mark for the first time in two and a half months, as jittery investors ramped up selloffs to avoid further erosion of their portfolios. The market remained sell-dominant throughout the week, extending its losing streak for the fourth consecutive week. Jamuna Bank PLC posted an impressive 38 per cent year-on-year growth in profit for the third quarter (Q3) of this year, owing to higher interest and investment income along with increased income on commission, exchange and brokerage. The third generation private commercial bank has reported a consolidated net profit of nearly Tk 1.06 billion for the July-September quarter, as against Tk 764 million in the same quarter the previous year, according to its financial statement published on Thursday.

The country's readymade garment industry has faced a production loss of US$400 million due to the recent labour unrest that has prevailed for more than a month since last September. "We expect that work orders that shifted to other countries will return as normalcy is restored in the sector," Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Khandoker Rafiqul Islam said.

Bangladesh is set to seek confirmation of the committed budget-support credits from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at the duo's annual meet beginning tomorrow (Monday), as its forex-crunch mitigation is exigent. The Bangladesh delegation to the meeting, headed by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, would request the WB for confirming its assured US$1.5 billion worth of budgetary support and IMF's $3.0 billion additional support, finance officials said Saturday. The conference of the twin institutions in the Bretton-Woods system will be held in Washington, DC on October 21-26. The ministerial meet will start on October 22.

গত সপ্তাহে ঢাকার শেয়ারবাজারে ব্যাপক দরপতন দেখা গেছে। ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জের (ডিএসই) প্রধান সূচক তিন মাসের মধ্যে প্রথমবারের মতো ৫,৩০০ পয়েন্টের নিচে নেমে গেছে। সংশ্লিষ্টরা বলছেন, উদ্বিগ্ন বিনিয়োগকারীরা তাদের আরও ক্ষতি এড়াতে শেয়ার বিক্রি করেছেন বলে এমন দরপতন হয়েছে। পতনের মধ্যে দিয়ে শেয়ারবাজারের গত সপ্তাহ শুরু হয়। চার দিনই বাজার নিম্নমুখী ছিল। কারণ, খুচরা বিনিয়োগকারীরা আতঙ্কিত হয়ে শেয়ার বিক্রি বাড়িয়ে দেন। সপ্তাহজুড়েই বাজারে বিক্রেতাদের প্রভাব ছিল এবং টানা চতুর্থ সপ্তাহের মতো লোকসানের ধারা অব্যাহত রয়েছে। ডিএসইর মূল সূচক ডিএসইএক্স শেষ পর্যন্ত ৫,২৫৮ পয়েন্টে দাঁড়ায়, যা আগের সপ্তাহের তুলনায় ১৬৪ পয়েন্ট বা ৩.০৩ শতাংশ কম। গত চার সপ্তাহে ডিএসইএক্স ৪৭৬ পয়েন্ট হারিয়েছে।

একজোট হয়ে মিয়ানমারের জাতিগত বিদ্রোহী গোষ্ঠীগুলোর চালানো একের পর এক হামলা সামাল দিতে গিয়ে হিমশিম খাচ্ছে দেশটির ক্ষমতায় থাকা সামরিক সরকার। দিন দিনই জটিল থেকে জটিলতর হচ্ছে সে পরিস্থিতি। বিদ্রোহীদের কাছে জান্তা বাহিনীর প্রদেশের নিয়ন্ত্রণ হারানোর খবর প্রায় প্রতিদিনই উঠে আসছে গণমাধ্যমে। এ পরিস্থিতির মধ্যেও সীমিত ও বিকল্প পথে দেশটিতে ওষুধ রফতানি করছে বাংলাদেশ। রফতানিসংশ্লিষ্টরা জানিয়েছেন, মিয়ানমারের ওপর মার্কিন নিষেধাজ্ঞা রয়েছে। সেই সঙ্গে আছে বিদেশী মুদ্রার সংকট। সে কারণে ২০২৩ সালের মে মাস থেকে ছয় মাসের জন্য ওষুধসহ সব ধরনের পণ্য আমদানিই একপ্রকার বন্ধ রাখে দেশটির সরকার। পর্যায়ক্রমে শিথিলতা আনলেও চীনা মুদ্রায় সীমিত আমদানির অনুমতির ক্ষেত্রে সৃষ্টি হয় দীর্ঘসূত্রতা। এ পরিস্থিতিতে বাংলাদেশ থেকে প্রতিবেশী দেশটিতে সরাসরির পাশাপাশি ওষুধ রফতানি করা হচ্ছে বিকল্প পথেও।
