Factory-gate prices of essential drugs in Bangladesh remained stable for long, though inflated by many accounts, while end-consumers face steep increases at pharmacy counters as regulators look on. This growing gap between manufacturing-gate prices and market realities has raised serious concerns about the accuracy of the data generated in the Producer Price Index (PPI), a key indicator of mill-gate prices prepared by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). The PPI, also a measure of inflation for the manufacturers, tracks factory or mill-gate prices for pharmaceutical products and other major manufactured goods in the country, too.

Bangladesh has reiterated that it is not in a position to shelter any new Rohingya, rather wants to see those who recommend Bangladesh to take more Rohingyas to share the burden by taking them. “We also made it clear to the UNHCR. It is not possible for us (to take more Rohingyas). UNHCR wants us to provide shelter to them (new arrival),” Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.He said Bangladesh has done more than what it was supposed to do by sheltering 1.2 million Rohingas on humanitarian grounds.

বিহার, পাঞ্জাবসহ শিল্পায়নে তুলনামূলক পিছিয়ে থাকা রাজ্যগুলোয় বিনিয়োগের ক্ষেত্রে মূলধনি যন্ত্রপাতি স্থাপনে ভর্তুকি ঘোষণা করেছে ভারত সরকার। জমি কেনার ক্ষেত্রেও দেয়া হচ্ছে বিশেষ সরকারি সুবিধা। রাজ্যগুলোয় স্থাপিত শিল্প-কারখানায় নারী শ্রমিকদের মজুরি পরিশোধেও ভারত সরকার অংশ নেবে বলে ঘোষণা দেয়া হয়েছে। স্থানীয় বিভিন্ন সূত্রের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, পোশাক রফতানির বৈশ্বিক বাজার সম্প্রসারণের উদ্দেশ্য থেকে এসব নীতি সহায়তামূলক পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে ভারত সরকার। সংশ্লিষ্টদের ভাষ্যমতে, আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে পোশাক রফতানিতে নিজেদের অবস্থান শক্তিশালী করতে সাম্প্রতিক বছরগুলোয় এমন অনেক পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে ভারত। রাজ্যভিত্তিক শিল্পায়ন ও বিনিয়োগে বিশেষ সুবিধা ঘোষণা ছাড়াও দেশটি গত ১০-১৫ বছরে পোশাকের বৈশ্বিক বাজারে অবস্থান টেকসই করতে নগদ প্রণোদনাসহ বিভিন্ন উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করেছে। একই সঙ্গে দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম পোশাক রফতানিকারক দেশ বাংলাদেশকে পেছনে ফেলারও লক্ষ্য রয়েছে তাদের। এসব উদ্যোগ সত্ত্বেও বিশ্ববাজারে পোশাক রফতানিতে নিজের অবস্থানকে শক্ত করতে পারেনি ভারত। এখনো বাংলাদেশের চেয়ে অর্ধেকেরও কম অর্থমূল্যের পোশাক রফতানি করছে দেশটি।

বাংলাদেশ পরিসংখ্যান ব্যুরো (বিবিএস) জানিয়েছে, আগস্ট মাসে দেশের সার্বিক ও খাদ্য মূল্যস্ফীতির হার কমে এসেছে। মাসটিতে সার্বিক মূল্যস্ফীতি ছিল ১০ দশমিক ৪৯ শতাংশ, যা আগের মাসে ছিল ১১ দশমিক ৬৬ শতাংশ। আর খাদ্য মূল্যস্ফীতি কমে দাঁড়িয়েছে ১১ দশমিক ৩৬ শতাংশ। এক মাস আগে যা ছিল ১৪ দশমিক ১০ শতাংশ।

At least 17 RMG factories in the Ashulia industrial zone have declared holiday amid protests by the workers. The number of factories declaring closure might increase as the day progresses, said sources at the industrial police. "17 factories have declared holiday as the workers did not work and the management did not come to the factories," said Md Sarwar Alam, superintendent of industrial police unit-1, claiming that the situation has improved compared to previous days.

উখিয়া উপজেলার পালংখালী ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ চেয়ারম্যান গফুর উদ্দিন চৌধুরী বলেন, “এই পরিস্থিতির মধ্যে সীমান্তের ৩০ টি পয়েন্ট দিয়ে দালালদের সহায়তায় রোহিঙ্গা অনুপ্রবেশ বেড়েছে।” বিজিবি ও কোস্টগার্ড বাহিনীর চোখ ফাঁকি দিয়ে এসব রোহিঙ্গা বাংলাদেশে ঢুকছে বলে জানান তিনি। মিয়ানমারের রাখাইন রাজ্যের মংডু শহর নিয়ন্ত্রণ নিতে তীব্র সংঘাত চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে আরাকান আর্মি। আর তাদের দমনে বিমান হামলা চালাচ্ছে মিয়ানমার সরকারের সামরিক জান্তা বাহিনী। তাদের এ দমনপীড়ন, হামলা, বিস্ফোরণের শব্দে বাংলাদেশের সীমান্ত এলাকা টেকনাফ পর্যন্ত কেঁপে উঠছে। এ পর্যন্ত খবর এসেছে, সীমান্তের ৩০টি পয়েন্ট দিয়ে বাংলাদেশে রোহিঙ্গা অনুপ্রবেশ ঘটছে। গত এক মাসে ২০ হাজারের বেশি রোহিঙ্গা বাংলাদেশে প্রবেশ করেছে বলে ধারণা করা হচ্ছে।

পররাষ্ট্র উপদেষ্টা তৌহিদ হোসেন বলেন, “ভারতের প্রতিরক্ষামন্ত্রী খুবই নগণ্য বিষয়কে প্রাধান্য দিচ্ছেন বলে মনে হচ্ছে। কারণ ইসরায়েল যুদ্ধের কারণে ভারতের প্রস্তুতি নেওয়ার কিছু নেই কিংবা হামাসের সাথে ভারতের কী সম্পর্ক তা বুঝে আসেনা। আর ইউক্রেন-হামাসের সঙ্গে বাংলাদেশের পরিস্থিতি কীভাবে তুলনীয় হয় এটাও আমার বোধগম্য নয়।” ভারতের প্রতিরক্ষা মন্ত্রী রাজনাথ সিংয়ের বক্তব্যের প্রসঙ্গে অবাক হয়েছেন বলে মন্তব্য করেছেন অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের পররাষ্ট্র উপদেষ্টা তৌহিদ হোসেন। আজ (রবিবার) দুপুরে পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ে অনুষ্ঠিত এক প্রেস ব্রিফিংয়ে এসব কথা বলেন তৌহিদ হোসেন। তিনি বলেন, "আমি যতটা উদ্বিগ্ন তার চেয়ে বেশি অবাক। উনি এ ধরনের কথা কেন বললেন। আমি এটার কোন কারণ খুঁজে পাচ্ছি না। আমি কোন অবস্থাতেই মনে করি না ভারতের সাথে আমাদের যুদ্ধ বিগ্রহের সম্ভাবনা আছে।"

The government has announced an export growth target of 12.4% for the 2024-25 fiscal year (FY), taking the present situation into consideration. Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Commerce in the Secretariat today (8 September) following a meeting with the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and the Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute, Finance and Commerce Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed hoped that export earnings would increase. "The situation has changed. Due to this, export earnings will not decrease compared to before. It will increase," he said.

The interim government's initiative to scrap the provision for whitening black money remained incomplete, as such a provision is still applicable in the case of purchasing an apartment and land. The provision has been offering a blanket facility for years to whiten money through investing in apartments and lands. No authorities can raise a question on the source of the declared money. Senior Research Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Towfiqul Islam Khan said the provision for apartments allows black money holders to enjoy a nominal tax rate, up to 2.65 per cent only, as per market value.

মেঘনা নদী থেকে লক্ষ্মীপুরের রামগতি, কমলনগর, লক্ষ্মীপুর সদর এবং নোয়াখালীর সুর্বনচর ও সদর উপজেলা হয়ে ছুটে আসা ভুলুয়া নদ ছুটে মিশেছে লক্ষ্মীপুর সদর উপজেলার ওয়াপদা খালে। অন্য অংশ ছুটে গেছে নোয়াখালীর ভেতরে। ৭৬ কিলোমিটার এ নদের প্রতি ১০০ ফুটে রয়েছে মাছ ধরার একটি করে জাল কিংবা একটি ডুবন্ত বাঁধ, বাড়ির পথ কিংবা ইটভাটার রাস্তা। নানান প্রজাতির এ জাল ও বাঁধে পানি কোনোভাবেই নড়ছে না। সাম্প্রতিক ফেনীর বন্যার পানি যেন ধাক্কা খেয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে পার্শ্ববর্তী জেলা লক্ষ্মীপুরে। যে পানি কয়েক দিনের মধ্যেই বঙ্গোপসাগরে গিয়ে পড়ার কথা, সেই পানি এখনও জমে আছে পাশের উপকূলীয় জেলায়। ফলে প্রায় দুই সপ্তাহ যাবত ঘরবাড়িতে গলা-সমান পানি নিয়ে এখন দিশেহারা লক্ষ্মীপুরবাসী। জেলার সদর উপজেলা যেন পানির সাগর। রামগঞ্জ, রায়পুর পানিতে একেবারে টইটম্বুর। রামগতি ও কমলনগরের পাঁচটি ইউনিয়নসহ নোয়াখালী সদর উপজেলায় ৪০ দিনেও যেন একফোঁটা পানি নড়ছে না। অবর্ননীয় দুর্ভোগে বসবাস করছেন কয়েক লাখ মানুষ। দুর্যোগের জেলায় এমন বন্যা আর পানিকে নজিরবিহীন বলছে স্থানীয়রা।

Bangladesh's struggle to foot liquefied natural gas (LNG) import bills is set to skyrocket in two years, as the country allegedly signed purchase deals at higher costs than the contemporary market rates. Officials said state-run Petrobangla inked four long-term LNG import deals in only a one-year period, from June 2023 to June 2024, to meet the demands until 2041. The latest such agreement involving higher costs was signed with Summit Oil & Shipping Company Ltd (SOSCL) in June 2024, maintaining 'top confidentiality', only a couple of months before the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, said a senior Petrobangla official. Along with a 1.5 million tonne per annum (MTPA) LNG supply deal, the local energy giant was also awarded a deal to build a 4.5 MTPA-capacity floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), he said, at a time when the company's existing FSRU was struggling to resume operation following an accident in late May.
