গত ১৫ দিনে বাজারে খুচরা পর্যায়ে মোটা চালের দাম কেজিতে ২ থেকে ৪ টাকা পর্যন্ত বেড়েছে। গত ৫ আগস্টের আগে শিক্ষার্থীদের আন্দোলন ঘিরে অস্থির সময়ে চালের দাম ২ দফা বেড়ে কেজিতে বেড়েছিল প্রায় ৩ টাকা। এর পরে আকস্মিক বন্যার প্রভাবে নতুন করে আবার কেজিতে ২ থেকে ৪ টাকা দাম বাড়ে। প্রধান এই খাদ্যপণ্যের দাম বিভিন্ন কারণে দফায় দফায় বাড়তে থাকায় সংসারের খাবারের খরচ মেটাতে বিপাকে পড়েছেন নিম্ন ও নিম্ন-মধ্যম আয়ের মানুষেরা। শুক্রবার (৬ সেপ্টেম্বর) রাজধানীর কারওয়ান বাজার, মগবাজার চারুলতা মার্কেট, কল্যাণপুর বাজারে সরেজমিন ঘুরে ও বিক্রেতাদের সঙ্গে কথা বলে জানা গেছে, মাঝারি চাল বিআর-২৮ ও পাইজাম বিক্রি হচ্ছে ৬০ টাকা কেজি দরে। পাশাপাশি মানভেদে সরু চালের কেজি ৭০ থেকে ৭৮ টাকা।

অনুসন্ধানে জানা গেছে, গ্রুপটি যৌথভাবে রিয়েলাইজড গেইন হিসেবে ৩১৯.৭৪ কোটি টাকা এবং আন-রিয়েলাইজড গেইন হিসেবে ৫২৬.৪৮ কোটি টাকা অর্জন করেছে। ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জের (ডিএসই) একটি তদন্তে দেখা গেছে, ২০২২ সালের শুরুর দিকে বেক্সিমকোর শেয়ারের দামে কারসাজি করে আট বিনিয়োগকারীর একটি গ্রুপ ৮৪৬ কোটি টাকা রিয়েলাইজড ও আন-রিয়েলাইজড গেইন করেছে।চার ব্যক্তি এবং চারটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের এ বিনিয়োগকারী দলটি সক্রিয় লেনদেনের ভুয়া ধারণা সৃষ্টি করতে সিকিউরিটিজ আইন লঙ্ঘন করে কৃত্রিমভাবে ধারাবাহিক লেনদেনের মাধ্যমে শেয়ারের দাম স্ফীত করেছে, যার বেশিরভাগই হয়েছে নিজেদের মধ্যে লেনদেনের মাধ্যমে। ডিএসই-এর তদন্তে এই সুবিধাভোগী বিনিয়োগকারীদের চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে: আব্দুর রউফ, ক্রিসেন্ট লিমিটেড, মোসফেকুর রহমান, মমতাজুর রহমান অ্যান্ড দেয়ার অ্যাসোসিয়েটস, জুপিটার বিজনেস, অ্যাপোলো ট্রেডিং লিমিটেড, মারজানা রহমান ও ট্রেডেনেক্সট ইন্টারন্যাশনাল লিমিটেড।

ক্যাপিটাল ড্রেজিং ও রক্ষণাবেক্ষণের মাধ্যমে পটুয়াখালীর পায়রা নদীর রাবনাবাদ চ্যানেলের গভীরতা বাড়াতে দেশের ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে ব্যয়বহুল ড্রেজিং প্রকল্প হাতে নিয়েছিল আওয়ামী লীগ সরকার। প্রকল্পে ব্যয় হয়েছে সাড়ে ৬ হাজার কোটি টাকার বেশি। এর বেশির ভাগই নির্বাহ হয়েছে রিজার্ভের অর্থ দিয়ে গঠিত বাংলাদেশ অবকাঠামো উন্নয়ন তহবিল (বিআইডিএফ) থেকে নেয়া ৫০০ মিলিয়ন (৫০ কোটি) ডলারের মাধ্যমে। খননের মাধ্যমে গত বছরের মার্চের মধ্যেই গভীরতা সাড়ে ১০ মিটারে উন্নীত করা হয়। কিন্তু এরপর প্রকল্পের খনন কার্যক্রমের আনুষ্ঠানিকতা শেষ হওয়ার আগেই পলি পড়ে ভরাট হতে থাকে রাবনাবাদ চ্যানেলের তলদেশ। খনন কার্যক্রমের আনুষ্ঠানিকতা শেষ হয়েছে চলতি বছরের ১৪ আগস্ট। আর সর্বশেষ ৫ সেপ্টেম্বর বৃহস্পতিবার পর্যন্ত হালনাগাদকৃত তথ্য অনুযায়ী, এরই মধ্যে রাবনাবাদ চ্যানেলের গভীরতা নেমে এসেছে ৭ দশমিক ৩ মিটারে। মাস শেষ হওয়ার আগেই তা ৭ মিটারের নিচে নেমে আসার আশঙ্কা রয়েছে।

The national board of revenue (NBR) has decided to cut down on taxes and duties on a number of essential food items in a bid to tackle prices. According to a report published in this newspaper late last week, import duties on onion, potato and pesticides have been cut. These waivers are to last until November 30, 2024. The 5.0 per cent regulatory duty on onion is gone. With regards to customs duty on imported potato, it has been reduced by 10 per cent, i.e. from 25 to 15 per cent. In an effort to reduce prices, pesticide importers are to get benefit of waiver of both regulatory duty and Value-Added Tax (VAT), keeping only customs duty at 5.0 per cent.

Global economic growth, according to a UNCTAD forecast, will slump to 2.6 per cent in 2024, just above the 2.5 per cent threshold commonly associated with a recession. Inflation is expected to continue to cool, although in many countries the price pressure will take longer to unwind than it took to emerge. Recent OECD forecasts also suggest that global economic growth will ease to 2.7 per cent in 2024, the lowest annual rate since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). This low growth performance reflects the impact of tight financial conditions, weak trade growth, and lower business and consumer confidence.

More than two decades ago, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), after forming the government, published a two-part white paper on the corruption of the Awami League government in 1996-2001. The 750-plus pages of documents examined 40 incidents of corruption and irregularities of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister during the period under review, along with 15 ministers and state ministers. To hit back, Bangladesh Awami League (BAL), the then-main opposition party in the parliament, also published a white paper on the BNP regime during 1991-1996 under the premiership of Begum Khaleda Zia. The so-called white papers were mainly compilations of various official documents, including papers of investigations and cases filed against the ministers and newspaper cuttings regarding the corruption and irregularities of both governments. The exercises were conducted by the country's two major rival political parties to show how corrupted the other one was when it assumed power. There was, however, no fair intention to take appropriate measures to curb corruption in the near future.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has set a six-month target to significantly broaden its tax base, aiming to reduce the disproportionate burden on the country’s existing taxpayers. “We have fixed a target of six months to widen the tax net, focusing on increasing the number of taxpayers. This will be our priority,” a senior NBR official told UNB over the phone.
