Gas short supply hurting industries

Poor gas supply and frequent electricity cuts have been taking a heavy toll on the country's industrial production, thus leading to rise in the cost of doing business, affecting productivity and eroding competitive edge. Textile and garment industry's growth, which is important for macroeconomic stability and sound financial sector, needs government's priority attention to resolve the energy crisis. Textile millers said up to 50 per cent of their production capacity remained unused due to gas supply shortage, forcing many garment exporters to source raw materials from outside the country.

আগামী তিনমাস রপ্তানি সংক্রান্ত তথ্য প্রকাশ করবে না রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরো (ইপিবি)। রপ্তানির তথ্যে বড় ধরনের গরমিল ধরা পড়ার পর এর ত্রুটি খুঁজে বের করতেই এ সময় কাজ করবে সংস্থাটি। সোমবার (১৫ জুলাই) সচিবালয়ে অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল হাসান মাহমুদ আলীর সভাপতিত্বে অনুষ্ঠিত এক সভায় এ সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে বলে বৈঠক সূত্রে জানা গেছে।
Corruption fight needs timetable, says TIB

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the government to adopt and enforce a time-bound roadmap consistent with its declared "zero tolerance" stance on corruption.With the call, TIB issued a press release on Monday. Mohammad Tauhidul Islam, director of outreach and communication of TIB, signed the statement.
TIB says it interprets the prime minister's disclosure about action taken against a former employee who amassed huge wealth as a reaffirmation of her "far or near, no matter" and "zero tolerance" pledges against corruption.
Spending on tax collection faces undesirable cut

The government spent Tk 0.31 to collect Tk 100 in domestic revenue in the fiscal year of 2019-20, but this fell to Tk 0.25 in 2020-21, according to the Medium Term Macroeconomic Policy Statement 2023-24 to 2025-26 by the Ministry of Finance. The breakdown shows indirect tax collection costs dropped from Tk 0.21 in FY2019-20 to Tk 0.13 in FY2020-21. Direct tax mobilization costs fell from Tk 0.31 to Tk 0.21 over the same period.
All forms of dealings drop in May in BD

International transactions and the same by foreign cardholders in Bangladesh experienced a significant decline in May compared to April 2024.Domestic credit-card transactions within Bangladesh also saw a decrease during the period in question, according to data available with the Bangladesh Bank. Similarly, inward credit-card usage posted a drop as well in May than that of the preceding month. Domestic transactions witnessed a slight decrease of 1.47 per cent, amounting to Tk 27.42 billion compared to Tk 27.83 billion in April.
