Economist and researcher Dr Ahsan H Mansur has highlighted discrepancy in reported financial figures, saying that Bangladesh Bank reports 11 per cent non-performing loans (NPLs), but the actual figure is 25 per cent. He also warned that increasing supply liquidity to Shariah-based banks could drive inflation and devalue the taka, urging immediate intervention to stabilize the banking sector. Dr Mansur called for a tight contractionary monetary policy aligned with the inflation targets. “The central bank needs to hike policy interest rates, halt currency printing, withdraw remittance incentives, and adopt market-based interest and exchange rates,” he asserted.

The government has again allowed the import of potato and onion to help stabilize the prices of these items in the local market. "Imports were suspended during the harvesting seasons of the two items. As the prices have gone up in the local market, the IP (import permit) is being granted," . He further said onions will be imported from India as discussions with relevant authorities were going on in this regard.

Both the number of deposit accounts owned by women and the amount of money they kept in those accounts with non-bank financial institutions fell in the January-March quarter of this year compared to the previous quarter, according to Bangladesh Bank data, suggesting decreased female participation in financial affairs. In January-March, the number of NBFI deposit accounts owned by individual males and money in those accounts rose compared to the previous quarter quarterly.

The largest state-owned fertilizer factory in Sylhet, Shahjalal Fertilizer Company Limited (SFCL), has ceased production for four months now, caused by a gas shortage. The production halt costs the government approximately TK 45 million (Tk 4.5 crore) daily. Neither factory authorities, nor the government, are able to provide any specific date till today, for when production will resume.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the National Export Trophy to 77 top exporters for the fiscal year of 2021-22 to encourage and create competition in increasing export earnings. She conferred the trophy in 32 categories for outstanding contributions to the country's export earnings and overall economy . Among the award winning exporters, Rifat Garments Ltd, in readymade garment (RMG) woven category, received the highest recognition, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Export Trophy, for highest export earnings in the fiscal 2021-22.

Bangladesh's overseas-employment sector was hit hard by the closure of the Malaysian manpower market with the overall outflow of workers falling more than 58 per cent in June from the previous month under its impact, official data showed. The number of workers having migrated from Bangladesh stood at 55,045 in June as compared to 131,696 in May, according to the Bureau of Manpower Employment.

Bangladesh's economy posted 6.12% growth in the third quarter (January-March) of the recently concluded fiscal year, recovering from the second quarter's low of 3.78% driven by sizeable growth across sectors – agriculture, industry and service.
