The fourth Economic Census is set to begin on Tuesday with plans to introduce new indices such as e-commerce and foreign workers. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) shared details about the upcoming census at a media briefing on Monday. The census will be conducted nationwide from Dec 10 to 26, utilising a fully digital and online system, reports bdnews24.com. A total of 140,000 tablets have been prepared for the survey, with 120,000 designated for regular use. For the census, the country has been divided into 13 divisions, which include 130 districts, 520 Upazilas, 2,600 zones, 19,000 supervisory areas, and 95,000 enumeration areas. In preparation, 12.23 million industrial units have been identified across the country. These include 6.62 million establishments and 5.61 million agricultural economic households.

Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Fahmida Khatun has said that Bangladesh Bank (BB) should stop printing money to provide liquidity support to troubled banks and proceed with a merger between strong and weak banks instead. Acknowledging the challenge as a double-edged sword for the central bank, Dr. Fahmida emphasized that mergers and acquisitions are the ultimate solution to safeguard depositors' money. She was speaking at a debate contest on 'Lack of good governance in the financial sector is the main challenge to combat corruption,' organized by Debate for Democracy (DfD) in the city's FDC premises on Sunday. Chairman of the DfD Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron chaired the programme.

The daily trade turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) tumbled to four-month low on Sunday as investors were reluctant to make fresh investments in stocks due to the bleak market outlook. Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 2.93 billion on the country's premier bourse, falling further by 12 per cent from previous day's Tk 3.35 billion. It was the lowest single-day transaction since August 4, the day before the fall of the Hasina-led government, when the turnover was recorded at Tk 2.08 billion. Market analysts said investors were unwilling to make fresh bets amid a lack of confidence while the latest big fines imposed on market manipulators shook the already volatile market.

Readymade garment exporters in Bangladesh are facing banking-related challenges, particularly in cases of raw material imports and product exports, according to a latest study by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).The most pressing concerns included delays in opening letters of credit (LCs), high bank charges and delays in payment receipt, it pointed out. The study surveyed some 63 medium- and large-sized garment factories. About 40 per cent of them identified delays in opening LCs as a key bottleneck in the supply chain, BIDS Research Director Monzur Hossain said on Sunday.

The economy expanded for the second consecutive month in November 2024 as reflected in the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) released Sunday. According to the latest report, the Bangladesh PMI increased by 6.5 points to 62.2 in November compared to 55.7 in October and 49.7 in September. A PMI reading above 50 indicates that the economy is generally expanding, while a reading of 50 signals no change compared to the previous month, and a reading below 50 reflects a contraction. The Bangladesh PMI was developed in 2024 by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and Policy Exchange Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Singapore Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management (SIPMM) and supported by the UK International Development.

Businesses registered a strong profitability recovery until June this year after two turbulent years marking the Ukraine war, but a decline by roughly 18% from the previous quarter has blurred their future outlook amid a slump in demand and a jump in interest rates. Investors are now focusing more on loss prevention rather than growth or expansion. In the eventful July-September quarter, firms listed on bourses saw their collective profit drop by more than 3% compared to the equivalent period last year, according to data compiled by Sandhani Asset Management.

Square Hospitals has reported Tk618 crore in revenue for the fiscal year 2023-24, with its profit surging by 27% to Tk46.87 crore compared to the previous year. The financial results were disclosed in Square Pharmaceuticals' recently published FY24 annual report as the hospital is an associate of the pharma giant. However, despite the robust growth, Square Hospitals did not declare any dividends for the year. Instead, the hospital plans to focus on expansion, upgrading, and replacing existing equipment with modern ones, according to the annual report.

Non-performing loan (NPL) buildup in Bangladesh's banking sector and liquidity stresses in the state-owned commercial banks came up for IMF scrutiny Sunday during a review of agreed reforms, officials said. Meanwhile, until June-end this year, the NPL in six State-owned Commercial Banks (SoCBs) had ballooned to Tk 1.02 trillion or 32.77 per cent of total outstanding loans amounting Tk 3.13 trillion. The operation of Tasia Securities has been suspended as it has fallen short of minimum required net worth commensurate with its paid-up capital. The suspension comes into effect today (Monday) and will remain effective until the stockbroker meets the regulatory requirement. Prior to the order issued by the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) refused to renew the trading licence of the brokerage firm for the same reason.
